editWorkcamp Wikipedia for Peace 2015
edit"Wikipedia for Peace" was a two-week project organized as a "workcamp" in cooperation of Service Civil International (SCI) Austria and Wikimedia Austria. One project leader was a long-time Wikipedian who became a new active WMAT volunteer in 2014 and who is also a leading SCI volunteer, the other project leader started as a Non-Wikimedian. In the course of the project 12 people from different countries (Spain, Ireland, Ukraine, Serbia, France, Portugal, Germany, Bulgaria) and language backgrounds came together in Vienna (starting August 14 until August 27, 2015) in order to edit Wikipedia articles about peace. The participants - mostly newcomers to Wikipedia and 80 % female - did research by themselves online and in libraries in Vienna surrounding the topic, they exchanged about their research and received additional input through workshops by Austrian organisations and institutions focused on peace (e.g. Amnesty International). Wikimedia Austria organized online buddies for the participants in their native language Wikipedia for additional help, especially in cases where we were not familiar with the particularities and rules in detail. Furthermore, Austrian volunteers held workshops on various Wikimedia projects besides Wikipedia: Commons, Wiktionary and Wikidata. The WikiTuesdays were used as social events (e.g. Austrian cooking) for the Austrian community to meet the international guests.
Thanks to our focus on peace issues in combination with the promotion of the access to open content, the Austrian Commission for UNESCO took the project under its patronage.

editHistorical Camera Collection Project
editThe Historical Camera Collection Project was dedicated to the photographic documentation of a private collection of historical cameras in the city of Graz. Six volunteer photographers from Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland were involved in the project, two of them have formerly not been active WMAT volunteers. They successfully tried to set new quality standards for product photography on Wikimedia Commons. The participants of the international project not only perfected their skills, they will spread them in their respective national communities. 95 media files were uploaded – with impressive results in terms of community decorations (as of 2015-09-30):
Total image usages – all namespaces | 191 | Distinct images used – all namespaces | 58 (of 95) |
Total image usages – main namespace only | 137 | Distinct images used – main namespace only | 51 (of 95) |
Individuals involved: 9 (active editors: 7, WMAT staff: 1, collector: 1). - WMAT support: project grant, travel grants, technical equipment, organizational support.

Wiki Takes Innviertel was a follow-up project (with different project leaders) to Wiki Takes Nordtiroler Oberland in June. The Nordtiroler Oberland project was documented in a way which should make it repeatable in different contexts. Both projects focussed on remote regions in Austria without a sufficient photographic documentation of cultural heritage monuments for Wikipedia. The Innviertel is a rural area next to the border to Germany, so the participants of Wiki Takes Innviertel could also provide images of near-by small towns in the neighboring country. With 688 new images, they brought us closer to the ultimate aim of a complete photographic coverage of all 37,000 cultural heritage monuments in Austria.
Total image usages – all namespaces | 335 | Distinct images used – all namespaces | 298 (of 688) |
Total image usages – main namespace only | 328 | Distinct images used – main namespace only | 291 (of 688) |
Individuals involved: 8 (active editors: 7 (engaging 1 active editor who has formerly not or very rarely been an active WMAT volunteer into the planning and/or executing), WMAT staff: 1). - WMAT support: travel grants, photography equipment, organizational support.

editWikiversity: Propaganda during WW I
editWikimedia was part of a university course by Prof. Friedrich Schipper at the University of Vienna which dealt with propaganda during WWI. The course lasted from February to August and was attended by 32 students (34 % male, 66 % female). Their term papers had to be written in the style of Wikipedia articles (in form and content) which was organised and done on Wikiversity. In order to achieve this task the students were supervised intensely by 17 experienced Wikipedians, their online or offline “tutors”. A detailed introduction in Wikipedia – including edit-a-thons – was held by the project leader and many of the tutors with WMAT assistance. In addition to Wikipedia editing, the students co-curated an exhibition of historical propaganda posters of WWI in the Library of the University of Vienna.

editTechnikpool
editThat’s how cross-chapteral volunteer support can work: WMAT, WMDE and WMCH joined forces and set up a new “Technikpool” in the German-language Wikipedia together. The “Technikpool” is a collection of technical equipment which is owned by the chapters and can be lend to the editors in order to produce free high-quality content. Not only that the equipment of WMAT, WMDE and WMCH is now united (virtually) and is presented in the same fashion, all of the equipment is available for all volunteers in Austria, Germany and Switzerland irrespective of their place of residence or the chapter’s home country.
Individuals involved: 4 (WMAT staff: 1, WMDE staff: 2, WMCH staff: 1)
