Since 2015, Wikimujeres has worked to reduce the gender gap on Wikipedia by promoting the creation and dissemination of free, inclusive, and accessible educational content. Our mission, aligned with the 2030 Wikimedia strategy, prioritizes training, mentoring, and collaborative learning, fostering a supportive environment that empowers women editors.

We strive to provide ongoing support to develop projects that not enrich the wiki culture and highlight historically overlooked contributions by women. Through our activities, we aim to close the gender gap in both content representation and editorial participation, moving toward truly equitable and diverse knowledge.

Among Wikimujeres' main goals, we highlight the following:

  • Improving the quality of information:Incorporating diverse perspectives to enrich content and shed light on topics and experiences of women historically ignored.
  • Promoting inclusion:Increasing women's participation in editing and content creation, while fostering collaboration and equitable representation in free knowledge.
  • Strengthening the community:Creating a safe, supportive, and diverse environment that fosters editors' identity and sense of belonging while promoting a culture of mutual support.
  • Ensuring ethical standards: Addressing gender disparities as part of Wikipedia’s commitment to equity and democratic access to knowledge.
  • Leading by example:Positioning Wikimedia as a reference for innovation and effective solutions for gender equality, promoting its role as a leader in inclusive virtual collaboration.
  • Focusing:Transforming the Wikimedia community into a space where women's voices are heard, recognized, and valued.

The following text presents the annual report and highlights of our work over the past 12 months. You can find last year’s 2023 report here and the detailed daily activities here.

Activity Report 2024

edit

Throughout 2024, we participated in numerous activities focused on strengthening and promoting diversity, gender equity, and the Wikimedia community. These activities included workshops, conferences, planning meetings, and international events aimed at learning and sharing knowledge on three key points:

1. Combating harassment and retaining women editors: We consider good treatment of new users essential for significantly increasing the number of active women Wikipedians. We emphasize the need to promote healthy and sustainable communication practices to protect online information ecosystems and ensure their long-term success. Observing that editors tend to stop contributing after receiving toxic comments, we prioritize mentoring and personalized support to overcome obstacles and encourage participation. In our sessions, we address the main challenge they face when starting to edit: how to interact with the community and navigate its many rules. Our goal is to inspire greater trust in Wikipedia and its sister projects by highlighting content moderation policies such as neutrality, copyright, and relevance criteria.

2. Empowering and creating leaders:Recruiting more women editors to promote gender equity in content creation is crucial. However, increasing women’s participation in decision-making spaces is equally important. For this reason, we dedicate time to developing technical and interpersonal skills to enhance leadership capabilities, making the movement more diverse, sustainable, and inclusive. We organized dialogue and support sessions for women Wikipedians, fostering camaraderie and mutual help. Maintaining continuous support, both in-person and virtual, provides a consistent sense of community. This project demands weekly investment in community building and maintenance, as recruiting, retaining, and motivating people requires significant time and personal training.

3. Aligning with the 2030 Strategy: We actively participate in the 2030 Strategy, advocating for equitable decision-making where all voices are heard and considered. We believe in the importance of building an inclusive and diverse movement where decisions are made collaboratively and representatively. Empowering women is essential to achieving gender equity and representation within Wikimedia.

Education

edit

Pompeu Fabra University (UPF)

edit

Since 2016, we have been conducting our Wikimujeres editing space. Every two weeks, we hold online meetings with expert women editors, students, and novice editors to encourage them to join the Wikimedia community, exchange ideas, resolve doubts, and work on joint projects. This space has fostered a network of collaboration between students, faculty, and Wikipedians, becoming a clear example of how universities can drive social change by promoting inclusion, equity, and active participation in digital culture.

Since 2017, we have continued working on the Gender and Equality Wikiproject with students pursuing the Graduate Diploma in Gender and Equality and Gender-Based Violence. They specialize in creating Wikipedia entries on terms related to women, such as "double burden," "gender stereotypes," and "glass ceiling," transforming terminological definitions into encyclopedic articles using reliable sources. This initiative uses Wikipedia as a central tool to reach key audiences, including researchers, students, professionals, and journalists.

Wikimania 2024

edit

Iberocoop

edit

At Wikimania, we represented Iberocoop alongside Wikimedia España. Our presentation addressed major challenges faced by the group in implementing the 2030 strategy, governance models, and creating inclusive, representative spaces. We contributed our transversal vision of gender inclusion and equity.

WikiWomen Summit

edit

Participation in the WikiWomen Summit provided an opportunity to collaborate, share ideas, and develop strategies focused on gender equity. The 2024 summit emphasized reviewing achievements and planning for the future, in line with Wikimania’s theme of “Collaboration of the Open.” Workshops reviewed outcomes from the Wiki Women Camp 2023, including recommendations to improve safety and participation.
