Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2024 is the fifth edition of an annual campaign where Wikipedia editors across the world, Wikipedia language projects and communities add photos to Wikipedia articles lacking photos. This is to promote the use of digital media files collected from various Wikimedia photography contests as well as photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community. Photographs help to grasp the reader's attention better than a wall of text, enrich and illustrate content, and make the article more instructive and engaging for readers.

The campaign runs from 1st of July 2024 to 31st of August 2024 as planned and the following activities took place in this year's campaign.

Grant applications

edit

In March 2024, we submitted an application for a Community Support Fund to coordinate the campaign, and the grant application was approved for a total of USD 11,800. This amount was lower compared to the grants received for the 2021, 2022, and 2023 editions. The approved grant was allocated to support the following activities: international prizes and awards, project coordination, media communications, campaign outreach and support, souvenirs and plaque awards, shipping of prizes and souvenirs, and social media management.

Campaign ambassardors

edit

In early June, we published a call for volunteers to serve as ambassadors for the campaign. Criteria were established to evaluate potential ambassadors based on their region, language, capacity, and relevant experience. Ambassadors from Sub-Saharan Africa, North-Western Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), East, South-East Asia and Pacific (ESEAP), and South Asia joined the International Team.

Their responsibilities included managing communication with representatives of Wikimedia Affiliates in their respective regions and inviting participants to join the campaign.

Invitations of participating communities

edit

In early May, we began inviting participating communities, including past participants and new communities that might be interested in implementing the campaign in their respective regions. Invitations were sent to over 100 Wikimedia affiliates, chapters, user groups, and thematic organizations. Thirty-two (32) Wikimedia affiliates across 27 countries joined the campaign.

In early July, we shared detailed information, including a comprehensive guide on how to organize the campaign, with the communities that registered to participate. Additionally, we created customized hashtags for all participating communities as they signed up on the campaign page.

We also introduced a tool to help identify articles lacking images, ensuring that participants had the resources they needed. The coordinator was readily available to answer any questions from the participating communities. Overall, the process was smooth and highly successful.

CentralNotice Banner and translations

edit

On June 18, 2024, we submitted an application for a CentralNotice banner to promote the campaign. The goal was to ensure that regular Wikipedia contributors, including past participants, were informed about the campaign. After addressing questions from the CentralNotice administrators and translating the banner texts into all the relevant languages where it would be hosted, the CentralNotice banner was approved as requested. This was crucial to ensure that contributors in those languages could understand the campaign's purpose and participate meaningfully.

Volunteers were invited to assist with translations, helping to ensure that participants could easily understand the instructions and all related campaign information. This process was executed smoothly and successfully.

Campaign launhing, social media and promotional materials

edit

The campaign was officially launched on July 1, 2024, as scheduled. To promote the campaign, regular posts were shared across various social media platforms, ensuring sustained visibility and engagement. A variety of promotional materials, including banners, posters, and graphics, were designed to attract both new and existing participants. These materials played a significant role in boosting interest and encouraging participation in the campaign.

Social media promotions and the creation of new promotional materials continued throughout the duration of the campaign, maintaining momentum and keeping participants informed and engaged.

Monitoring and support

edit

During the campaign, we closely monitored participation across all the affected languages on various language Wikipedias. This was done to identify any issues that required attention and to minimize disruptions, addressing them promptly when they arose. While there were a few disruptions, they were minimal, as participation was limited to experienced editors, ensuring smoother coordination and quality contributions.
