Wikipedia for Peace/Women's Suffrage 2021
Wikipedia for Peace: Women's Suffrage [Online Camp]
1-7 February 2021
About the project
Switzerland celebrates 50 years of Women's suffrage! Throughout the 19th and 20th century, women around the world have fought for their right to participate in elections. Women in Switzerland were the last in Western Europe, gaining suffrage on 7 February 1971, 50 years ago. And still today, women in some parts of the world are not able to vote, even when men are.
This is an online camp! In order to change the world into a better place, we need to become active on different levels, be it in the streets or in online spaces, also during a pandemic. Volunteers and activists are looking for new online spaces to use for peace and social justice. Wikipedia can be one of them! In this Wikipedia for Peace online camp, we will learn how to write Wikipedia articles and will get to know more about inspiring activists, events and organisations who fought or fight for women's suffrage and women's rights.
A week of editing Wikipedia together and connecting! Every day we have ca. 3 hours in the afternoon (Central European Time) where we gather in the video platform Zoom. And in the mornings you can work individually or in small groups. You don’t have to have knowledge on Wikipedia already to join the project. We will be a group of up to 15 participants from around the world. We will meet online via video calls from 1 to 7 February 2021. Our common language will be English. Apart from editing Wikipedia and learning / discussing about the women's rights movement and gender-based discrimination we are facing today, we will also get to know each other.
This project is organised by Service Civil International Switzerland in cooperation with Wikimedia Switzerland.

Morning | Individual task: Introduce yourself: Send 3 photos that represent your life to our communication channel in order to introduce yourself. Also, pick an article from the article list that you want to write/edit. | Individual editing: Spend some time doing research for an article of your choice and writing it. Thomas is online in Zoom to help you in the process. | Free day / Self-organized activities: This is the day for you to ignore Zoom and to get out into the real life. However, the group could still decide to do things together also without our computers! :) | Individual editing: More editing of articles! Again, Thomas will be on Zoom to give you feedback and help you if you need anything with your last articles.
Afternoon (13-30-ca. 16.30 CET) |
Start of the project: We will get to know each other with a few interactive games. We will also talk about your expectations for the camp and how we want to work together as a group. | Introduction to Wikipedia and to women's suffrage: Let's get this started! In this crash course, you will learn some basic understandings of what the fight for women's suffrage was like, you will get to know some of the people, events and organisations in our article list and of course you will learn the first basics how to edit Wikipedia articles. | Check-in + More Introduction to Wikipedia: Now that you've made your first edits, here you will learn some more things that make your Wikipedia articles better. | Check-in + Workshop #1: Corona and Gender: We will first have a longer check-in to inspire each other about the article that we wrote. Afterwards, we will discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on us and the world, also getting to know how the pandemic is related to gender issues. | Check-in + Workshop #2: How to become an activist around gender issues: On this day, we will share again how the editing is going for us. There will be a workshop where you can learn how to become an activist around gender-related questions - including on Wikipedia. | Open Space, Celebration + Evaluation: What topics would you like to go deeper into? What can you share with the rest of the group? Throughout the week we will collect topics to talk about and in this "Open Space" participants have the opportunity to present and discuss things that they would like to bring up. By this point, we will be Wikipedia heroes with many new and improved articles! We will use this time to celebrate and to evaluate the project together.
Evening | More getting to know games | Free / Self-organized activities: Participants can always propose informal activities in the late afternoon and evening hours such as cooking together, watching a film together or just hanging out :) |
