Wikipedia usage statistics

Data about articles

edit

No data about what pages are requested how often is collected. Maybe you could add such statistics in the quid servers or in Apaches. Because of caching you won't get precise numbers but relative numbers are also helpful.

Data about users

edit

I (Kate) currently provide some opt-in usage data about users (see http://kohl.wikimedia.org/kates-tools/count.action?user=Kate&dbname=enwiki for an example [broken link as of 2010-09-23]). Several other people have expressed an interest in similar kinds of data. Please list any ideas below.

Examples:

  • Edits by namespace over time, e.g. to people start editing more in the Wikipedia namespace or talk pages over time?

Access to usage logs

edit

Logs in 2003 (not accesible anymore)

edit

Access to usage logs to investigate the browsing patterns of wikipedia's users is essential to its long term health. Until now, this information has not been released, and is not available directly to those who wish to process it and determine what users' interests are, how they transit from link to link, and etc.

What is the plan for making this information available to contributors in future?

Of course, it should be anonymized, to avoid potential privacy problems.
