Wikipedians in residence at Serbia, Wikimedia Serbia

Wikipedian in residence is part of a global program of cooperation with cultural institutions GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums), which has been implemented worldwide for more than 10 years.

Wikipedians in residence at Wikilive in 2018

The idea of this program is in two-way cooperation with cultural institutions, which are assigned an experienced editor of Wikipedia for a certain period of time, in order to work on increasing the content of Wiki projects in the field of cultural and historical heritage.

The project implies a one or several-month-long work of the chosen Wiki editor in the cultural institution, which is supported and/or partly financed by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia, ie Wikimedia Serbia.

The goal is for the Wikipedian in residence to help the institution in digitizing the materials that would then be on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource, to train employees on how to edit Wikipedia, to help write articles about the institution and numerous materials under the protection of institutions.

The project has been implemented around 160 times, in more than 100 cultural institutions around the world so far.

Wikipedian in residence does the following:

  • Digitizing various materials (books, photos, postcards, documents, etc.)
  • Uploading digitized material to Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, and other relevant wiki projects
  • Working on increasing the content of Wikipedia according to the agreed topics and available literature in the institution
  • Organizing and holding workshops on editing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons for employees of a cultural institution
  • Working with employees and helping them better understand Wikimedia projects
  • Mediating between Wikimedia Serbia and the cultural institution
  • Maintaining connections between the organization and the institution and making suggestions for new models of cooperation or strengthening the old ones

So far, 30 Wikipedian in residence projects were realized in Serbia, 2 are ongoing, while numerous are in preparation.
