The Assamese Wikimedia Community (Assamese: অসমীয়া ৱিকিমিডিয়া সমাজ) is a user group of wikimedians who work on various wiki projects related to Assamese language. Assamese Wikimedians are committed to advancing the Wikimedia (Free Knowledge) movement in the Assamese language.

This group aims to establish a centralized hub for advancing the collective efforts that were previously pursued by different members primarily as individual initiatives. Additionally, this forum intends to consolidate all reports and documentation from past initiatives in one accessible location, providing valuable resources for future members.

Reasons and justification

Geographic distribution of Assamese language in India.

Assamese is primarily spoken in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, where it holds official status, and it also serves as a lingua franca for the broader Northeastern region of India. It boasts a speaker base of over 15 million people.

Assamese Wikipedia needs more offline events (meet-ups/conferences) to enhance its development. We encourage representatives to step forward and organize these activities. This user-group will concentrate on boosting Assamese Wikipedia within local communities. Currently, many Assamese Wikipedia editors work independently, and there is a requirement to coordinate their endeavors. This group will aid in formulating and executing a well-defined roadmap for the future.

Objectives

• To enrich Wikimedia projects in the Assamese language by organizing Wikimedia-related events such as group discussions and edit-a-thons
• To increase public awareness about Wikimedia projects in Assam by organizing events and workshops.
• To collaborate with other Wikimedia communities as well as other individuals and groups to promote Wikimedia projects in the Assam and North-East India.
• To increase content on Assamese Wikipedia.
• To increase content about Assam on other Wikipedias.
• To bring together all Assamese speaking Wikimedians scattered around the world on a single platform

Activities

• A community online meet is organised on the first Sunday of every month.
• A newsletter called 'Wikipatrika' is published on the first day of every month that highlights the monthly progress and updates from all the wiki projects.

History

• Hosted an edit-a-thon on Assam-based freedom fighters in August 2023
