Description - WMDE offers editors of Wikipedia a range of support. This includes but is not limited to trainings, funding for their own projects, organising of events and so on. This support is not known by quite a few volunteers of the German Wikipedia. With this campaign, we want to make people aware of the WMDE community portal. The community portal presents the different aspects of Wikimedia Deutschland's work

Depending on the targeting, users receive a different landing page. The banner, which is aimed at inexperienced users, refers to learning offers from both WMDE and the community. The banner for experienced users refers to a page in the community portal that presents the various training courses.

Metrics -

We hope that the WMDE Community Portal site will become more popular. It is therefore of interest to us that the “News” page in the portal in particular is observed by more users. We will also track whether the campaign has a (positive) influence on the editing behavior of users who we refer to as occasional editors. The tracking is secured by our in-house data unit.

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?

edit
Banners - The banners have already been created and implemented. Our own CN Admins can start the campaign if the campaign has been green lit by a volunteer admin:

For the duration of the campaign an info box will be added at the top of the site, which will acknoledge the campaign

The campaign will be announced on the German Wikipedia in the course of next week. This will also allow the community to submit objections or communicate requests for changes. The link to the communication will then be added here.

We are also planning to repeat the campaign in August. The planned period is 11 - 18.08.2025. --Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 15:04, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The campaign was announced in WP:Kurier. More information was posted (and linked from Kurier) in Community–Portal Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 12:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Ciell,
would you mind looking over this CN application? Ideally, neither Johannes89 nor theHexer will be involved in this request, as it means mixing their roles as volunteers and employees. Thank you! Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 11:32, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Merle von Wittich (WMDE), just to let you know I have your request on my radar. I hope to get to it this week! Ciell (talk) 19:44, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Merle von Wittich (WMDE), am I observing correctly you designed these two banners (linked above), but did not yet create the campaign(s)? Do you expect me to do that? Ciell (talk) 15:45, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ping @Merle von Wittich (WMDE)? Ciell (talk) 16:06, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Normally our FunTech Team can create those campaigns – I only need the approval of the campaign. Is this fine with you or would you prefer a different proceeding? Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 17:04, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All affiliates need a volunteer CN admin (like me), to sign off on their CentralNotice camapigns. A CentralNotice is the banner (front-end visual) + the campaign (technical settings): therefore, if your FunTech Team is going to create the campaigns themselves, I'd like to see the campaign and the technical settings before you enable. Ciell (talk) 17:53, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell I would not mind If you would create the campaign, but at the moment I am not sure if this is last approved version of the banners; to my understanding there have been some code changes after the first implementation. Therefore I am still waiting for this info. – So let me either get back to you either with the campaign settings of the FunTech Team or the go ahead, that you can create the campaign :) Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 07:47, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am not 'big' for coding: if you'd like a full review I can ask another CN admin to do that. But because you choose to run a customized banner it is your responsibility to test it across all platforms. I just want to see the final banner and the campaign settings - I can do this myself if you prefer, but might not have time available before the weekend. Ciell (talk) 15:43, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have no expectations that you will check the banners :) I realize that this is within our scope! - Unfortunately, I still don't know whether the current banners have been implemented. - At the moment I'm still hoping that WMDE/I will make progress here by 24.03. and that you can then release the campaign for the planned run (last minute).
With every hour that passes, I assume that we will have to postpone the campaign period.
Thank you very much for your work and availability despite the current situation. Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:43, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell
I have an update \o/:
I have now moved the start of the campaign back a day, so that ideally there will be less stress for you when it comes to the approval! Have a wonderful weekend! Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 15:44, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the updates, @Merle von Wittich (WMDE)! I have reviewed and enabled the campaign, the banner should go live tomorrow morning. Ciell (talk) 12:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! <3 Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:28, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Merle von Wittich (WMDE) one more question: I notice your fun-team has set up the campaign including a sample rate of 1 for legacy hiding and impressions. I have never come across a sample rate like this, and learned (the hard way) that WMF sometimes uses history logging samples at a rate of 0,01%. Is your team sure a sample rate of 1 makes sense, and does WMF agree with it being used like this? Ciell (talk) 13:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have to forward that question to @Kai Nissen (WMDE). Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:34, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Actually, this is something we set for all of the fundraising campaigns we run and it's part of the "muscle memory" when setting up the campaign. It dates back to a Central Notice introduction I received when I started working at WMDE in 2011. Thinking about it now, I'm sure we don't need to set a sampling rate at all, so I'll disable it. We measure banner interaction (and also banner display) using Event Platform. Kai Nissen (WMDE) (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining @Kai Nissen (WMDE)! Interesting that you received information about this during the onboarding almost 14 years ago: the Help:CentralNotice does not mention the 'special features' options, and I sometimes feel a bit in the dark on how the can be used. The small paragraph about banner history logging was only added recently. I'd love to learn more about this, if you ever have the time to write your experience down.
