Wiki Loves Onam campaign aims to enrich and document the diversity of the cultural festival Onam celebrated in various places. Everyone can part of this campaign by taking the photos and then uploading it into Wikimedia Commons.

With already banners up for Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki for minorities in the arab community, and also other campaigns targeting the arab language, the calendar is kinda full and space for more campaigns is getting tight. Before I can advise, I do need you to fill out the template in the top of this page first.
What is your intended audience for this banner, and what is it's purpose? What languages are you aiming for (we'll need a list - our selector does not have the option 'multiple')? Hi @Gnoeee,
I contacted and coordinated with the Wiki Loves Monuments banner coordinator on your behalf, and have now created a banner (preview) and campaign for you. The latter shows that the banner will get 3 impressions on every project, in the countries you listed above. I hope this is okay, also considering the busy banner times we have.
Before I can enable:
  • Please check the preview for me, and check if the link works the way you want
  • I can target Malayalam for you, but neither the landing page nor the banner text is in said language, and imho it's a bit rude to target other languages with information only in English. Did you have any plans in translating the landing page? How would you make sure the Malay speakers understand the goals and rules of the competition?

Thank you so much @Ciell for coordinating on that. It seems the preview link is incorrect. Could you please share the correct one so I can check it? We have created some possters and videos tutorials for the campaign with both Malayalam and English.   • Object to geographic scope. Ciell, we are again letting banner spam go unchecked. Per the very first line of the article, Onam is celebrated mostly by the people of Kerala. If we have the ability to target only Kerala, that is the only place this banner should be allowed to run. If not, at minimum we need to limit this to India, at least in the English version. (Yes, there is a miniscule chance that someone might come across a diaspora Onam event in somewhere like the USA and be motivated by the banner. As you mentioned from the article Onam is celebrated mostly by the people of Kerala, I would like you to have a look on the main campaign page as well as en:Malayalis article.     I am aware of the sensitivity of too many banners targeting English wp (and everyone wants to target enwp - a consequence of being the largest project in our movement...), and I am sorry to have caused annoyance with this banner. I have tried to balance the sentiment against the wish of the organizer through a banner with a very limited diet, showing only 3 times + no repeated cycle. The banner you saw today will not reoccur to you (unless you visit another project/language version). Is that okay...? Ciell (talk) 16:09, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Gnoeee, I took a look at those pages, and they do not change my stance. No one is saying that diaspora celebrations of Onam do not exist, but the cost-benefit tradeoff, of whether the potential contributions this could spur are worth the banner bloat, is vastly different when we're talking about Kerala (where Onam appears widely celebrated) vs. the U.S. (where most people have never heard of it). This is nothing personal — there is a repeated problem at CentralNotice (which I've commented on before) of campaign organizers (understandably) trying to target as wide an audience as possible and CentralNotice admins not doing enough to balance that pressure with the need to reduce banner spam.
    @Ciell, a limited diet is better than an unrestrained one, but for any region where Onam is not widely celebrated, once is too much. I therefore propose we halt the campaign in English in all countries except India. (As for The banner you saw today will not reoccur to you, I don't comment here because I found it a personal annoyance; my goal is to reduce banner spam for everyone, and as such the fact it won't recur for me personally is basically irrelevant.)     @Leaderboard, I'll defer to your knowledge about which countries Onam is widely celebrated in. I can only speak to the American perspective, where it definitely is very far from that.     Can we target US states/regions, or only whole countries? The infobox in w:en:Hinduism in the United States lists a couple of states with larger Hindu populations. Even if your own specific branch of Hinduism doesn't celebrate this particular festival, seeing something related to your identity or interests can be encouraging.     Three tiers might be appropriate: Kerala itself (high), countries >5% of residents being Hindu (see table in w:en:Hinduism by country; normal), and places with low percentage but ~1 million residents (Pakistan, Indonesia, UK, US [or relevant subsections thereof], maybe Canada; low).     That would great if our banners could do that, but I am afraid your overestimating what out software of ~15 years old can do: the weight only defines which banner has priority, in this case the Onam banner got assigned priority over the WLM banner that is also running in about half of the countries requested. What did you expect it to do @WhatamIdoing? I wonder if there's a feature request we could distill from your idea.
    In the meantime, I have now switched off the banner for Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, Australia and Germany. The requested countries in Asia and the Middle East are still enabled. I hope it's not to much of a disappointment @Gnoeee, and I hope you'll still have a great competition and Onam. Ciell (talk) 20:02, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
