Discussion
editAre you sure that it would be appropriate to use a blanket centralnotice for all users on all projects across the entire continent? I think it would be unnecessarily disruptive. --Yair rand (talk) 18:36, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- I understand your question, but think I'd like to target all, yes. We are aiming for 1/3 Wikimedians, 1/3 non-wikimedians, but still into computers, and 1/3 GLAM. We want to attract new coders to the movement, because only about 15% of the devs at the moment are women. I think our target group could be on all projects, and because we are based centrally in Europe and chapters might grant scholarships, we welcome participants from outside the Netherlands. At our Women Techstorm in may, we had 12 nationalities.
- I do want to limit to 5 impressions, then a pause and then 5 impressions again, so not showing all the time. Ciell (talk) 18:53, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
Are translations welcome or is it intentionally in English to engage English-speaking coders? -- Ата (talk) 12:34, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for noticing Ата, this was incorrect in my request. I now changed the setting to just those who have the English interface. (Since the main language of the Techstorm is English). Ciell (talk) 13:18, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- This wasn't my intention; I just wanted to say that internnational CNs are usually localised, while this one is not. People with good English do not necessarily have English interface of Wikipedia :) --Ата (talk) 08:09, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- That is again true Ата, you couldn't be more right! But as you can see, a full on notice gets in the way of the WLM banner. Ciell (talk) 09:40, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

@Ciell: I notice that the banner intensity is now 50% across the European Union. That is a bit much maybe, to run in parallel with Wiki Loves Monuments? Currently the settings seem to be providing 10 impressions btw. A full-on banner like this for this wide an audience may be a bit large if you're only aiming to find 13 people or so from that audience? (compared to Wiki Loves Monuments, which is running in most these countries and aims at a much wider audience) Effeietsanders (talk) 16:42, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Why do you think we're only aiming at 13 people or so? That would be crazy indeed. I'll lower the weight a bit, but this banner is only on until Sunday, whilst WLM ruins for the whole month. Ciell (talk) 16:45, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- That was based on my reading of above: you're aiming to find 50 people, of which 1/3 is non-Wikimedians (which I'm assuming you may know some through workshops etc already). By the way, it may be worth while considering a differentiated diet for countries with a competing campaign and countries without (e.g. the Netherlands and Belgium). (I hope 'ruins' was a Freudian typo btw ;) ) Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 16:50, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- If we find a lot more, even better! But we're inviting 50 people, yes. It's on for not-logged in as well, because the non-wikimedians need to have some kind of motivation towards Wikimedia. Romaine set up the campain: I'm guessing to do different diets in different countries you need to create several banners and I'm not confident enough with my abilities to do that yet.
- (And yes, "ruins" was a typo. :P ) Ciell (talk) 16:57, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Romaine: would it be possible to implement a stricter diet in countries with a competing campaign (assuming Ciell has no objections)? Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 17:14, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Mmm, I think it is going weird now. The banner has been set to English/Dutch only. Result: only people who visit English/Dutch language wikis or people who have set the their preferences to English/Dutch, see the banner. Besides in the UK and Malta, the banner is almost not competing with the WLM banner as it is almost not shown at all on Wikipedia (etc).
- Last time the previous banner was scheduled for a week I believe, within already a view days the number of people subscribed was already high. With relatively many people more targeting to the banner, the settings are set to 10 impressions, that is higher than last time, while the number of people to have subscribed is relatively less. Romaine (talk) 17:24, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- That was my doing, just 2 hours ago, because in 24 hours we only got 1 subscription. The original setting where indeed all languages (hence the question above if translation was nessecary), so I changed the language settings. The impressions where set at 2, I changed it to 10. Ciell (talk) 17:29, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Based on what I understand of the purpose of the banner and Wiki Techstorm, I see insufficient reason to limit the banner to English/Dutch only (also after having read the comment above). That is basically targeting people in the Netherlands, Flanders, the UK and Malta, while the rest is largely ignored. If I understood correctly you want to invite people from the whole of Europe.
- I kept the number of impressions low to avoid conflict with other banners. Certainly as both for the Wiki Techstorm and WLM the first few impressions count the most. With a low number of impressions, the conflict between the two banners should be less and makes it possible to live along each other was my thought. I did set two diets: number of impressions + limit in traffic. I think the combination might be the cause of the problem for the low number of subscribers. Romaine (talk) 17:40, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- I want to propose putting back all language-versions for the upcoming two days, Thursday and Friday. I know WLM runs as well, but only two days with our limited impressions shouldn't 'ruin' (:P) your competition. Ciell (talk) 09:40, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Lodewijk: @Romaine:
- @Lodewijk, Romaine, and Ciell: I've moved all non-WLM countries to a seperate campaign and set the traffic for those at 100%. All other countries are set to 20% of traffic. I've removed the limiting and the impression delay to balance out. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 22:59, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for helping out Seddon! Ciell (talk) 09:40, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

- Why would 10 impressions (per period, per browser) be needed? 1 or 2 seem plenty. At any rate, start making the diet stricter once clicks start decreasing (which signals the annoyance:interest ratio is worsening). --Nemo 10:27, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

I suppose this banner is only supposed to be for registered users, right? It's hard to imagine that someone who didn't even bother registering on a wiki might be interested in highly complex contributions such as coding. Either way, the clicks from the WLM-IT banner seem to have suddenly halved yesterday. --Nemo 10:24, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
- No, it's meant for anonymous users as well: we think there might me a lot of people with knowledge that have not registered for Wikimedia yet. Ciell (talk) 10:33, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
- I'm astonished. Clear case of overshooting. Is there a single person here thinking this (all users, countries and languages and 10 impressions!) is a good idea? I could not see anyone above. It's also clearly against the usage guidelines. --Nemo 20:14, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- The banner is shut down. Ciell (talk) 06:42, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

This is typically the kind of banner for which I don't see any point in displaying it for all users in an entire continent. As a French reader living in Switzerland, I don't understand why I have a banner, displayed in English, for an event taking place thousands of kilometres from home. Limiting it to the Netherlands seems to me to be a minimum. --Framawiki (talk) 16:39, 8 September 2018 (UTC) PS: saying in the banner that the event will be in the Netherlands would be a minimum ! --Framawiki (talk) 16:39, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
