Survey invitation on talk pages
edit- Consider not using references for all Wikipedias, some might not like that formatting (e.g. Russian Wikipedia) -- (paraphrasing Saint Johann)
- Do not use ref tags on anything but english wikipedia --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 06:39, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- Watch out for talking about the WMF in the invitation, since local communities may not know who the WMF is or the community leadership might not agree with the statements being made -- (paraphrasing Romaine)
- We might want to think about collaborating with admins from local wikipedias on drafting the message next time so it is more balanced? --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Problem with sources is you use references, but not add {{reflist}}, {{reflist talk}} or the <references /> tag at the bottom of the message, so the references are displayed at the very end of the page, rather than at the end of your message. Please fix all the message you already send, and keep this in mind to the future. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 14:57, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Translations
edit- I have heard feedback already that some of the French translations were not done well. We will review these for next year's survey to make sure they are corrected. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk)
- The Dutch translation was not completed in time, so we were unable to send the survey out in Dutch. Hopefully we can get it fully translated next year. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk)
- Saludos Edward. He completado la encuesta. En la sección EDICION, la Actividad 6 de 11: carecía de encabezado en español. Mejor suerte para la próxima.--Sanador2.0 (talk) 15:14, 25 January 2017 (UTC) (Copied from this page by --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 18:10, 25 January 2017 (UTC))
- The Italian translation should be fixed: it is ambiguous, unclear and sometime mistaken. With this kind of text the survey cannot be considered as accurate or scientifically valid. --Lucas (talk) 10:44, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- @EGalvez (WMF): To me, as a native German speaker, the translation of the "final reminder" into German as "endgültige Erinnerung" sounds quite dramatic and stern (a bit like "this is your last chance to finally do something, or else bad things will happen!"). I would have simply translated it as "letzte Erinnerung". Also, there is a small inconsistency: The title of the reminder posted to discussion pages in de.wikipedia.org is addressing the recipient formally ("Ihre Rückmeldung ist wichtig") whilst the text uses the informal address du (which is appropriate, as it's the customary form in German-language Wikipedia; for the title, this should have been "Deine Rückmeldung ist wichtig"). Gestumblindi (talk) 21:04, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you Gestumblindi for your feedback - it is much appreciated. Volunteers translated the text for us. We really appreciate their help and know that there might be mistakes. I see your point about something being to stern, so we can keep an eye on that next time. Thanks again! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 03:11, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
- @EGalvez (WMF): The addressing inconsistency between the title and the message's content is probably due to different volunteers translating these parts? I think it would be a good idea to always let someone check a post as a whole for consistency in the translation. And, I think, translators should be native speakers of the target language, if possible, as even quite competent non-native speakers may miss finer points. Software
edit- A few people had technical issues with the survey - firefox seemed to be an issue for some specifically - need to investigate. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 23:49, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- What do you think about use Labs platform to host an open source survey app ? Currently an external service is used, but WMF has the technical and the volunteers to host own survey platform. --Framawiki (please notify !) (talk) 16:35, 19 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Framawiki (talk) - sorry for the delay in my response. Thanks for asking this question. While we do have the expertise to probably carry this out, I'm afraid that we currently don't have the time or staff resources to support building and maintaining a reliable survey software tool. Surveys are very complex and require design, product development, testing and maintenance. While we can rely on volunteers to support us, this kind of work also requires staff to be able to maintain the service. Are you a volunteer developer yourself? Do you know of others who might be willing to help work on something like this? There is [ https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89970 an idea being developed] to have a simple survey software on the wikis, but we haven't embarked on this kind of project yet. I hope this answers your question. Happy to keep chatting about this and if you have other ideas. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 17:31, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hello EGalvez (WMF) ! The idea of the mediawiki extension is interesting and is the ideal solution, but it seems it according to the link you gave me not yet ready. I was thinking more by mentioning the labs to an open-source software to host, usable for any wikimedia teen/people/project that needs it, such as https://www.limesurvey.org used by wmcat for the hackathon. It would not require any development, except possibly an oauth integration with the wikimedia login system (and even then, could be used without to start). --Framawiki (talk) 21:04, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Suggestions(there isn't obligation to Mr. ou Ms. Director in Wikipedia ,nobody is obligated to agree about the subjects)
editI don't speak English, i am from South America but i will try to speak something:
- In some countries some people thinks the encyclopedia is left-wing ou right-wing depending of the text but i think there are some controversial material. I don't know if these affirmations are true, but i think Wikipedia in the world should study about the subject, to brig high quality, safer softwares, attractive layout.--Ultragp7 (talk) 05:04, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
- Wikipedia in EU and another countries, for example, there are different ideas, solutions, skills and maybe there is more quality on Wikipedia. I know: that all costs something, no one is obligated to agree about my suggestions including mr. Director ms. Director or writer i only suggest study about change, but i know there are logistics, structure, "one philanthropic supply and demand" in these cases and study layout in Wikipedia, fonts in Wikipedia, but study typeface, resolution, etc... I think all versions of Wikipedia could try to learn and learn solutions, layout, fonts.--Ultragp7 (talk) 05:04, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
- Editing on Wikipedia is difficult, because the layout, fonts of Wikipedia, the fonts should(suggestion) be larger and sober like Encyclopedias by date, we should bring quality inside WIkipedia, for example, German Wikipedia for example, we can see different software to Wikipedia and conduct, there is more quality on German Wikipedia, Britanica, and another languages, countries and you can change experiences. I don't think the Wikipedia should change rules about editing, but there are examples in versions of Wikipedia and we(the Wikipedia) can improve. Why don't Wikipedia study those stuffs(i said one time there are costs, logistics, sometimes it looks unreal, but...). More spell checker to edit texts in any language. I talk about Nobody is obligated to agree about the subjects that i wrote. I suggested the Wikipedia became easier(easy to find articles, editing articles without problems, control problems, bring some innovation, why not Wikipedia? Thank you! --Ultragp7 (talk) 23:31, 14 March 2017 (UTC)--Ultragp7 (talk) 00:57, 18 March 2017 (UTC)--Ultragp7 (talk) 04:02, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
- Proposal to make it easy start page(nobody is obligated to agree about the subjects, nobody is obligated to agree): Bring more ideas from German Wikipedia and another Wikipedia with another ideas currently. I think the Wikipedia users could have new experiences, bring new ideas in another ideas. In all languages i think that when start page( in English, or other language) you could have some type of subjects: for example: music, sports, games, American movies(Hollywood), European movies, African movies, movies from Oceania, Asiatic movies & South-American movies(Latin-American television, for example) and more, society, economics sciences, political sciences, historical sciences, geographical sciences and more American television, European television, African television, television from Oceania, Asiatic television & South-American television(Latin-American television), animation, comics, biography, drivers that race in auto racings, tracks in auto racing to make easier find your article, but it must be serious without no similarity another sites, it should be "original", "new experience". There isn't obligation to Mr. ou Ms. Director in Wikipedia, nobody in Wikipedia is obligated to agree about the subjects about themes that i proposed, i could be wrong, for example! Thank You! --Ultragp7 (talk) 04:27, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Ultragp7 - I apologize for taking some time to get back to you. I think the best way to answer your question seems to be to provide you with context about how the projects and the Foundation work together. Each Wikipedia language project is independent and makes its own decisions. And as you probably know they are entirely run by volunteers who want to make it better, just like you. Volunteers are free to work on whatever they want to improve the projects: helping new editors, making policies about content, etc. The Foundation supports the communities in various ways such as focusing on things like community health and helping with new editor experiences, and other similar projects. In addition to the Foundation, there are many Wikimedia Affiliates around the world working to help improve the projects. I would suggest that you take some time to look at your wikipedia and think about what changes you'd like to see and how you can best lend your support. And ask other volunteers to help you make those changes. Reach out to your local Wikimedia Affiliate. You can find additional support at the Wikimedia Resource Center. There are lots of learning resources there as well to help you reach your goals. I hope this helps to answer your questions. Let me know if this is useful for you and helps to answer your questions. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 17:45, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
Reminder(s) to people listed in survey of spring 2018
editCiao survey specialist(s),
- I am and want to stay on the list and even on the feedback list (on purpose with my metaPage), but got a reminder on Dutch Overlegpagina. Please change it and use in the future for all people who give feedback the page they provide. Not sending two reminders when they gave feedback would be super!
- Grazie, Klaas `Z4␟` V: 05:20, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
