Purpose of the report

This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their progress after completing the first 6 months of their grants. The time period covered in this form will be the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Global metrics overview - all programs

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees' programs. Please use the table below to let us know how your programs contributed to the Global Metrics. We understand not all Global Metrics will be relevant for all programs, so feel free to put "0" where necessary. For each program include the following table and

1. Next to each required metric, list the outcome achieved for all of your programs included in your proposal.
2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome.
3. In addition to the Global Metrics as measures of success for your programs, there is another table format in which you may report on any OTHER relevant measures of your programs success

1. Participants: The number of people who attend your events, programs or activities, either in person or virtually. This definition does not include people organizing activities, social media followers, donors, or others not participating directly.
2. Newly registered: The number of participants that create new accounts on a Wikimedia project. These include users who register up to two weeks before the start of the event.
3. Content pages: A content page is an article on Wikipedia, an item on Wikidata, a content page on Wikisource, an entry on Wiktionary, and a media file on Commons, etc. This metric captures the total number of content pages created or improved across all Wikimedia projects.

Organization changes

Governance

The Bylaw of the organization should be revised based on the revisions of the Law on Non for Profit Organizations adopted in December 16, 2016 by the Parliament of Armenia and also on the need to revisit the governance structure, necessity to clearly indicate the roles and responsibilities of the Board of the organization and the executive body, to clarify who are the beneficiaries of the organization and etc. WMAM Board has started discussions on the necessary changes and the legal partner “Legal Lab” is currently drafting the new bylaw of the organization.

Executive Director

On October 2017 Executive Director Arthur Khalatyan resigned and a new ED Gayane Vardanyan was appointed by the Board.

Staff

Mher Bekaryan will be contracted by WMAM for implementation of APG from January 2018. He was involved in Western Armenian program funded by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation with part time contract. We are not sure if Gulbenkian Foundation will continue funding our project with the same scope from January 2018. Besides, Mher was very much involved in implementation of our APG. He carries out all responsibilities of the cashier, logistics, procurement, provides administrative support to all staff members. Thus, the Board decided to move Mher from Gulbenkian’s funding to Wikimedia Foundation’s funding with 0․75 FTE contract.

Due to changes in tax legislation WMAM has to revise staff contracts and the gross salaries. From January 2018 the income tax will increase from 26% to 28%.

Office space

To host more events in the office, to run a WikiClub in Yerevan, Wikimedia Armenia enlarged its premises, renovated and opened it for the community in the end of December 2017. Initially we were negotiating for 2 more rooms, but later we were given 5 rooms in total, which enabled us to have larger space with seperate spots suitable for edithatons, hackathons, community gatherings and discussions.

Accounting system and Human resource management

On October 2017 Wikimedia Armenia hired an accounting company Taccount to conduct its accountancy and HR related activities. The company analyzed the available documentation and the accounting system and now works towards filling the gaps and making necessary changes based on the Armenian legislation and the comments received by the experts of the Wikimedia Foundation during the site visit.

Together with Taccount, WMAM prepared missing staff contracts, paid employees vacation liabilities for 2017, thus ensuring less burden on our annual budget. In order to clearly differentiate each employees responsibilities, to avoid overlaps and also to see the capacity building needs, WMAM staff is currently recording their all daily activities. After analysis of records of 3 months we will come up with revised job descriptions in mid March, 2018.

In the end of the reporting period WMAM initiated change of the bank. The reason for this was the lack of online and other services required by our accounting system and the service fees. WMAM requested service description and price quotes from three banks and decided to start cooperation with Ameria Bank.

WMAM regulated its documentation flow by setting a system of registration and tracking of incoming and outgoing letters.

Telling your program stories - all programs

Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.

• We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
• Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.

Teachers’ WikiWeek

Wikimedia Armenia organized its 6th Teachers’ Wikiweek which took place from October 29 to November 3, 2017. The total of 86 teachers have applied online to be part of the seminar and only 28 were selected. A selection committee usually consists of experienced Wikipedian teachers and WMAM staff. They evaluate new teachers’ applications anonymously and make their final decision based on careful evaluation. The experienced teachers are being chosen based on their editing activity in different wiki projects throughout the year. Some of the experienced teachers have become wiki assistants by forming groups and helping the newcomers. Our agenda was packed with lots of editing activities. There were also discussions regarding the use of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in the school curriculum and education process. The teachers used the school textbooks and have separated those articles (related to their own field of specialisation) that are missing or are incomplete on the Armenian Wikipedia. This list will be used for other projects as a recommendation list for creating and editing articles. Teachers have created and improved more than 75 articles.

Workshops

In this period Wikimedia Armenia has organized several workshops for different educational centers and institutions. The most important of them are listed below:

Workshop at Armavir Development Center, 17th of October - Armavir Development Center is a socio-economic NGO with the missionto promote the collaboration of public, private and business sectors aimed at ensuring socio-economic development of Armavir region. WMAM has been askedto conduct a workshop for the centers’ young members - school and university students. Yurik Mkrtchyan and Mher Bekaryan presented the participants Wikimedia Armenia’s mission and its programs. The latters learned also wikiediting tools, and Wikipedia main guidelines. WMAM representatives are in touch with the Center to follow up with the wiki editing process.

Workshop at the American University of Armenia (AUA) - The American University of Armenia is a private independent university in Yerevan, Armenia. Mher Bekaryan, Wikimedia Armenia staff member, conducted a workshop in the Engineering Faculty of the American University of Armenia (AUA) (College of Science and Engineering, Introductory Level General Education Course, AUA) on December 6th, 2017. The AUA students were given tasks of translating and editing articles on English Wikipedia. As a result, the students has worked in groups and created 5 articles on English Wikipedia.

Workshop for Yerevan State College of Informatics students - On December 21st, 2017 Wikimedia Armenia organized a workshop in its new premises for the members of the media team of Yerevan State College of Informatics. Lilit Tarkhanyan and Yurik Mkrtchyan taught the participants how to edit Wikipedia who collaboratively worked on a medium size article.

Workshop for L.Tolstoy School N128 students - On the 27th of December, 5th grade students from L. Tolstoy School N128 had an exciting opportunity to visit Wikimedia Armenia office. Susanna Mkrtchyan, the President of Wikimedia Armenia, welcomed almost forty children and spoke with them about Wikipedia and the work of Wikimedia Armenia is doing to promote development of Wikimedia Projects.

Workshop for Arshaluys school students - Wikimedia Armenia has organized a workshop for high school students of Arshaluys community on the 29th of November, 2017 which took place in Wikimedia Armenia office. Students learned about WMAM as an organization, its activities, projects, future directions and also watched an exciting film dedicated to WikiCamps.

Fall WikiCamp 2017

Wikimedia Armenia has organized its first 2017 Fall WikiCamp which started on the 28th of October and ran through 5 November. A total of 147 participants were registered to attend the Wikicamp camp free of charge and only 61 were chosen to participate (based on their active participation in Wikimedia projects and their editing in Wikipedia and its sister projects).

We had 5 non-experienced participants who paid to attend the Wikicamp. The participants were both from Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).

During the camp students learned to edit and contributed to Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and Wikisource․ Besides editing process, campers were actively engaged in sports games including Fort Wiki, Sportlandia, table tennis, tug of war, basketball, volleyball, football and chess. Apart from this they participated in intellectual games like brain ring, various puzzles, time management games and more.

As a change we have decided to allocate more time for cultural activities in order to boost cultural development. During these 8 days campers learned Armenian national song and dance, staged musicals and have performed ethnic dances from around the world on the last day of the camp. Children contributed to the creation of costumes and stage props which they had fun making.

3. Establish WikiClubs within reach of every student

WikiClubs statistics

In September Wikimedia Armenia Education team reshaped the WikiClubs statistics based on the sponsors’ request. Previously we were counting the active users and their contribution in Armenian Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Wikisource. In the new metrics we also included new users index, female/male ratio, active users/population ratio, new users/population ratio. Wikipedia learning lab at TUMO Stepanakert

Workshop at TUMO Stepanakert

On October TUMO center in Stepanakert has proposed to the Stepanakert WikiClub Coordinator Irina Safaryan to run a Wikipedia learning lab for 10 TUMO students. It was decided that the students will write 10 articles about Askeran Region’s 10 villages in 10 days!

Before the launch of Wikipedia learning lab at TUMO Stepanakert Irina started conducting her research to find more information about the above mentioned villages. She met with historians and linguists and had discussions on many topics concerning those villages. As a result she collected lots of books and materials which helped the students to write the Wikipedia articles. The students also drove through all 10 villages to gather photos which they used to illustrate the articles.

During the workshops students have learned Wikipedia editing tools, uploading media files to Wikimedia Commons, analyze facts, improve Armenian typing skills, and how to prepare a complete and final report on all the work done during the 10 days.

In the end the students who created 10 articles about 10 villages of Askeran Region in Armenian Wikipedia, became Stepanakert WikiClub members.

AGBU

On November 21, a meeting took place with Arsen Stepanyan, the manager of "Bridge for CSOs" program carried out by Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) in Armenia. Parties discussed collaboration directions, the grants opportunity provided by the program and AGBU support during organization of Wikimania 2019 in case Armenia was selected to host it. After the meeting WMAM has applied to AGBU’s Innovation for social impact grant proposing to establish 5 WikiClubs in different regions of Armenia where we have active teachers editing Wikipedia.

A large Wikipedia concrete sculpture was submerged to the bottom of Sevan Lake on the 29th of September with the purpose of creating an artificial reef for the resident fish. This unusual and interesting idea was proposed by the divers from ArmDiving club! Before diving the sculpture was located at the UWC Dilijan during the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2016. Wikimedia Armenia invited editors, Wikimedians and friends for this community event.

This event was running in parallel with Wiki Loves Science editathon. The participants of the WLS editathon also joined this event and after their trip to Lake Sevan they were given an amazing opportunity to tour and visit Hayravank, Kecharis and St. Harutyun churches in order to take photos for the Wiki Loves Monuments contest.

“I create a vital article” campaign

Wikimedia Armenia continues to support the creation of quality content on the Wikipedia, this time through the "I create a vital article" campaign. The campaign aims at the improvement of the articles from "1000 articles every Wikipedia should have" list with the help of professionals. The project will be accompanied with different events and will end on May 14, 2018 with a 24h editathon dedicated to the 5th anniversary of Wikimedia Armenia.

To make this project happen the list of 1000 articles were refreshed and revised in order to provide it to the potential editors. The list was divided into more detailed sections taking into account the potential fields of interest. Also, the corresponding language articles were studied to find the best language version to translate from. The project page was created to support the participants more effectively.

On November 23 WMAM representatives met with the Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister of Armenia on Education Gevorg Muradyan. The topic for discussion was the campaign initiated by WMAM aimed at creation of 1000 vital articles in Armenian Wikipedia. Gevorg Muradyan gave several valuable advices on how to spread the word and how to engage really valuable editors in the campaign.

Wikimedia Armenia has launched the “I create a vital article” campaign on November 28th, 2017. The campaign started with a 2 day introductory workshop in Aghveran.

All the interested participants had one week to register for the event. The announcement of the campaign was shared using various media channels: WMAM official website, Facebook, Armenpress and Armacad. The latter became the information supporter of the initiative.

Wikimedia Armenia received 196 applications out of which 80 applicants were selected to participate in this event. Fifty applicants have managed to attend the workshop physically and the other ten have participated online. Fifteen participants were experienced Wikipedians who formed various groups and taught the newcomers all the editing techniques. Wikimedia Armenia staff has contacted all participants in advance regarding the articles to be edited based on their individual professional background. This made the process much easier to manage as workshop participants came with their selected articles and started working on them without delay.

As of the end of December 73 articles were assigned to be improved. So far 21 articles are completed.

Saturday Workshops

Every Saturday Wikimedia Armenia continues to organize open workshops at the WM AM office where new editors are taught how to edit different wiki projects and the experienced editors participate in workshops dedicated to different themes. Anyone interested in Wikimedia projects, Wikipedia, Wikimedia Movement who need assistance, as well as experienced editors, who want to edit in pleasant atmosphere, participate in these workshops. We have about 15-20 participants in each workshop. o Experienced wiki editors of Wiktionary, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata help WMAM staff members to conduct the workshops.

One of the workshops - the one on the 23rd of December was not only a usual workshop day but also the day when editors gathered together to decorate Wikimedia Armenia office and Christmas tree. Some of the editors brought ornaments which were given to WMAM office as presents!

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017

2017 was the third time that Wikimedia Armenia joined the Wiki Loves Monuments, an international photo competition. Armenia has participated in this initiative in 2013 and 2015.

Wikimedia Armenia has suggested a list of registered monuments in Armenia and Artsakh (more than 25,000 monuments in Armenia and more than 5,000 monuments from Artsakh). Invitation to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments competition has been announced on Wikipedia and Wikicommons, Twitter and Facebook and other social media channels in order to attract larger and non-wiki audience.

Prior to this we have organized Wiki Loves Monuments photo expeditions and have teamed up with WikiClubs to organize the same in their respective towns and surrounding areas. We have organized such expeditions in Gyumri, Ddmashen, Vanashen, Mrgavan and Lernapat.

Wikimedia Armenia has organized a separate Wiki Expedition during which ten participants have attended and took photos of various monuments located in Kotayk and Gegharkunik provinces (seven neighboring communities). As a follow up a series of workshops have taken place during which photographers were taught how to edit and upload photos in Wikimedia Commons.

As a result of this initiative Armenia had 151 participants from different parts of the country who have uploaded 34,848 photos 243,554 MB in total. 28 photographers have uploaded more than 100 and 4 participants more than a 1000 photos.

The authors of the 10 best photos of the WLM 2017 Armenia and Artsakh photo contest will be awarded during the Wikipedia 17 event in January 15.

WikiCamp Summer 2017 was held on the 12-20th of August in La Bourboule, at François et Suzon, France. There were a total of 43 participants from 6 different countries, including USA, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Armenia and France. The goal of this camp was to teach Western Armenian speakers to edit Wikipedia, Wikisource, and encourage them to join the global Wikimedia Movement. Campers also had an opportunity to read and discuss various books, analyze linguistic issues and address challenges of translating process.

• During the WikiCamp the following activities were carried out:
• 2 workshops per day, total workshop hours - 4,5 hours per day
• Translation corner which included fun translating activities
• Reading corner that allowed participants to read the assigned literature (three titles)
• Sharing each day activities on social networks
• They wrote articles about their country's sights, as well as in [ http://bourboulog.blogspot.am/ educational upbringing and didactic topics.]
• A trip to the lake Pavin and La Besse was organized for the participants as an exciting outing
• Student's opinions and their suggestions․ A questionnaire was prepared by some of the participants and distributed among all attendees so they could make comments on the camp itself, provide suggestions, recommendations and challenges. These comments will be taken into consideration and used where applicable during the next camp.

During 7 days of the WikiCamp, 206 articles were edited thanks to the efforts of Western Armenian students (see stats below).

Wiki Training in Armenia

The second Western Armenian WikiWeek was held from 10th till 17th of July, in Aghveran, Armenia. Training was organized for 10 participants from different countries and professional backgrounds including teachers, journalists, school principals, skilled professionals and others interested in the field of Wikipedia. During the WikiWeek the participants were introduced all wiki editing tools and learned to create and improve articles in Western Armenian.

After the Wikiweek: one of the school principals from an Armenian school in Istanbul introduced wiki editing skills and shared her own experience with the teachers.

During 7 days of the WikiWeek, 253 articles were edited thanks to the efforts of Western Armenian participants.

Meeting in Cairo, Egypt

Azniv Stepanian, Wikimedia Armenia Western Armenia Program Coordinator has attended the WikiArabia/2017 conference during which she had an opportunity to talk about the Western Armenian Wikicamps organized in different countries (Lebanon, Portugal, France). She particularly stressed the importance of Wikicamps and their role in bringing ethnic and religious minorities together in terms of language preservation by the Diaspora communities from all over the world. It is important to note that this is the first time that WikiArabia conference had a guest speaker from Armenia․

It was a wonderful opportunity to also present Wikimedia Armenia programs to the Armenian community in Cairo since there was little or no awareness about the actual projects implemented by Wikimedia Armenia. After the presentation the participants discussed the opportunities to be engaged in Wikimedia Armenia projects, particulary the Western Armenian program.

Meeting in Aleppo, Syria

Azniv Stepanian had a meeting in Aleppo with Vahe Ghazarian and Hakob Kilejian, Principals of Kare Jeppe Armenian College (Syria), on November 29th, 2017. During the meeting a discussion was held on Wikimedia Armenia, its vision, purpose and projects, Wikipedia, role of volunteers (what they gain from volunteering for Wikimedia), Wikiediting, etc.

As a result of this discussion on December 1st, 2017, Kare Jeppe Armenian College invited Azniv to introduce Western Armenian programs to 10 and 11 grade students and to share her working knowledge and experience. The participants had an interesting talk on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Armenia projects, Western Armenian clubs and Wikicamps. College teachers, moderators and administrative assistants have also attended the meetup. After the meetup the participants expressed a great interest in joining the organization's programs.

Overall this was a very exciting and informative event which laid foundation for further collaboration and cooperation between Kare Jeppe Armenian College and the Wikimedia Armenia.

The CEE Meeting 2017 was hosted by Wikimedia Poland, in Warsaw for wikimedians and the user-groups representatives from Central and Eastern Europe. Armenia was represented by 5 participants: Susanna Mkrtchyan, Avetik Yesayan, Hasmik Mailyan, Siranush Ohanyan and Artur Yengoyan.

Siranush Ohanyan who attended this meeting for the first time has especially been impressed with Asaf Bartov’s 4 hour long presentation about human facilitation skill. It was very useful for wikipedians and wikimedians to gain some theoretical and practical knowledge about group discussion and decision making in real life situations. The other participant Hasmik Mailyans an English teacher in one of the schools in Armenia. She liked the Wiki workshops and learned useful teaching methods and techniques. She also learned how to edit wiki projects and use wikipedia as a powerful educational tool. Hasmik was particularly impressed with the following sessions: Wikidata and Wikidata related projects, GLAM and photo contest tools, Wikimedia's strategic direction, endorsement process and next steps. Artur Yengoyan mentioned that this is the first time for him to attend a meeting of this kind taking into account the magnitude and the format of this event. Artur felt that this meeting was productive, because so many opinions were expressed and experiences shared by participants from different countries.

WikidataCon Berlin 2017

Wikidata Con is a conference dedicated to the Wikidata community, organized for and with the help of the community. The first WikidataCon took place on October 28th-29th, in Tagesspiegel, in Berlin. 200 people from all around the globe have attended this conference to celebrate Wikidata’s 5th birthday and to share their knowledge and experience with the like minded community. From the Armenian community Karen Hakobyan and Armine Aghayan attended the event. During the conference they learned about new wikidata tools. After the conference, Karen Hakobyan and Armine Aghayan have shared their experience and invaluable knowledge with the rest of the Armenian community at Wikimedia Armenia office during our Saturday workshop on the 11th of November.

CEE Newletter

After the Wikimedia CEE Meeting in Warsaw this September the CEE community has decided to launch a CEE Newsletter. The aim of the newsletter is to collect in a more consistent, reachable, reusable way stories and good practices developed in the region. Wikimedia Armenia regularly shares its ongoing events and projects in the CEE Newsletter. So far we have contributed to the November and December issues.

Armenian-Austrian collaboration

Wikimedia Armenia in collaboration with Wikimedia Austria has launched an article writing contest on Armenian and German Wikipedia from 1-30th of November. The aim of this contest was to create and improve articles about Armenia and Austria on both Wikipedias. Wikimedia Armenia modified the criteria of the articles thus guaranteeing better quality. The editors were informed that only those articles which had at least 8000 bytes size and 5 references would be given points.

Wikimedia Armenia and Wikimedia Austria have finalized the results of the contest and announced the winners. In Armenian Wikipedia we had 19 participants who have created 270 articles and improved 2. In German Wikipedia the contest had 7 participants who created 49 articles and improved 2. From the Armenian side the winner was user:Gardmanahay who alone has created around 150 high quality articles. User:Matthias Süßen who participated in Wikimedia Austria contest has been announced as the winner. The winners will be given a wonderful chance to travel to the country they created an article about.

Wikimedia Armenia has organized several contests like this in the past. These initiatives help to foster relationships between different Wikimedia chapters and to create diverse quality content.

Armenian-Norwegian cross-chapter project - Bodil Biørn project

In 2016 Wikimedia Armenia and Wikimedia Norge organized a joint writing contest where participants were editing articles on both countries. The winners of the contest had a chance to visit the country about which they were writing about. After the Armenian winner user:Gardmanahay visited Norway, the Oslo National Archive offered to start a joint project - transcription of Bodil Biørn’s photo descriptions.

Bodil Biørn was a female missionary from Norway who traveled to Armenia and was a witness of the Armenian Genocide. The photos of Biørn preserved in The National Archive in Oslo are essential documentations of Armenia and Armenian History as they demonstrate the life, culture, and customs of Armenian people living inthe Ottoman Empire. Among these documents there are photos of the Armenian Genocide - the atrocities committed against the Armenian people of the Ottoman Empire during W.W.I, they will be valuable in the further recognition of the Armenian Genocide by different states and communities all over the world.

Wikimedia Norge and National Archive in Oslo with the endorsements and support from Wikimedia Armenia, Armenian Genocide Museum-institute applied and successfully received the Arts council project grant to transcribe descriptions of Bodil Biørn’s photos taken in 1905-1920 and digitized by The National Archive in Oslo.

As Wikimedia Armenia has a strong network of Armenian volunteers with their help we will facilitate the translation of received content into Armenian, making it available for other Armenian speakers. In addition, WMAM will assist the usage of the images, content, as well as descriptions in the Armenian Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, thus promoting the dissemination of these documents in the Armenian environment. Finally, we will support the transfer of the digitized content to the research institutes, archives and museums of Armenia, especially to The Armenian Genocide Museum-institute.

The project will be carried out in the second half of WMAM APG.

Resources to plan for measurement

• Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
• Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
• Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.
