Growing the Luganda Wikipedia by engaging academics and students studying Luganda. These people will translate articles from English to Luganda Wikipedia.

Project idea

An editorial team of 15 Luganda lecturers/specialists was identified. These consist of lecturers from eight universities in Uganda that offer Luganda as a course of study.This is a strategy aimed at minimizing costs. These lecturers will easily mobilize their students to join the translators' team. The translators should be trained/inducted in 2 -3 day course so that everyone knows what to do. At the end of the exercise they should be awarded a certificate. This certificated should be awarded jointly by Makerere University and Wikimedia Sverige. For one to be a translator, they must hold at least a diploma in a Luganda-related discipline or be undergraduate Luganda students.

Scope and activities

The project intends to bring together 15 Luganda specialists and students with a purpose of translating 1000 articles from English to Luganda over a period of six months. The articles will be identified by the specialists and the community to optimize impact. By the end of the project there will be a rich terminology base that will ease future translations especially with the aid of open-source Computer-assisted translation software.

• Activities will involve identification and mobilization of 15 Luganda specialists/students to work as translators.
• Training them as translators for Wikipedia material.
• Identifying the 1000 articles for translation.
• Developing the terminology base.
• Translating the selected articles and reviewing them by editors.

Intended impact:

Target audience

There will be three levels of impact.

• Firstly the teachers that will get a deep insight in the Wikimedia movement.
• Second the students, who will try out how it is to be a Wikipedian and a translator of a variety of materials.
• Last but not least, this will actually establish a Wikipedia for those speaking Luganda with a substantive collection of world-class materials to even inspire free writers in Luganda to contribute further to Wikipedia..

Fit with strategy

• This project is increasing participation, and in specific in the Global south.
• It also improves quality on the Luganda Wikipedia since the participants are well educated.
• By increasing the number of articles by some 500% on Luganda Wikipedia we are hoping it will give an entirely new reader base and thus increasing reach.

Sustainability

With a freely available terminology base it will be very easy for further translation to be undertaken while ensuring quality and consistency. The team of 15 voluntary translators/writers are more likely to interest many others to join them. These will assure the continuity of the project in partnership with the editors.

Measures of success

• Have 1000 new articles on Luganda Wikipedia by the end of this project.
