- This project will build off of the Metropolitan New York Library Council's current GLAM-Wiki outreach, providing consultations, public and professional staff trainings, public tabling at events, beginning and advanced workshops at the Metro workspace (located at Union Square), project support, and other public and private Wikipedia events, to institutions currently outside of METRO's membership. The goal of this project is to strengthen lasting partnerships with Wikipedia in New York institutions long after the grant is over and document the project for future replication, as well as to increase article quality, facilitate image donations, and connect Wikipedia volunteers to institutions.

Goals for the fellowship include:
- Build on Metro's existing work with New York institutions to develop a local Wikipedia community through Metro's Wikipedian-in-Residence fellowship.
- Engage in organizing sustainable GLAM-Wiki projects at New York libraries, archives, and museums to help recruit new, scholarly editors and encourage large scale content donations.
- Identify topics and partners to engage; organize Edit-a-thons, workshops, and presentations to kickstart interest in Wikimedia for the purpose of recruiting new editors, further institutional educational missions, and create learning communities interested in Wikipedia and free culture.
- Encourage institutions to adopt Wikipedian-in-Residence programs at New York GLAMs and encourage institutions to adopt Wikipedians-in-Residence using case studies for the purpose of creating longstanding commitments within institutions and expanding the depth of Wikipedia's relationship with these institutions.
- Increase media coverage and public awareness of New York GLAM-Wiki activity to promote free culture and foster growth in diversity of editors.
- Expand relationships with related regional Open Access and Open Data groups to increase collaboration and volunteer support.
- Strong documentation of all projects and events for future knowledge and replication, including testing of Wikimedia Analytics and other analytics tools.

- The challenge and underlying principle of all projects and events will be to enliven interest in free culture, Wikipedia, and digital rights among underrepresented groups to achieve diversity of institutions and participants contributing to Wikipedia and public knowledge. (New York has one of the most diverse concentrations of populations and languages in the world. Queens alone is home to 170 languages and has one of the most culturally diverse populations in the U.S.).

Institutional Outreach and Support
- Continue to expand and develop GLAM projects started as WiR for METRO. A focus will also be put on bringing Wikipedia editing into the workflow of librarians and archivists, and encouraging longstanding engagement with Wikipedia whether or not a WiR is present.
Media Production
- Projects and Events will be promoted through ongoing articles and announcement submissions to local and national media and news networks which an emphasis on open news platforms. The project will further be posting updates to the This Month in GLAM newsletter and communicating updates at the monthly GLAM-out sessions.
Special Events
- Workshops and presentations on basic editing, advanced editing, data tools, the Wikipedia community, and special topics like the Gender Gap will be prepared and given. Edit-a-thons, panels, talks and presentations, Photo-hunts and hack-a-thons will be held to increase interest and involvement.

- This project is building off the preexisting support of the Metropolitan New York Library Council by extending the Wikipedian-in-Residence position into the fiscal year and employing the WiR for two days out of the week for the duration of the grant, completing the project July, 2014. This brings the Fellow up to 3 days at the Metropolitan New York Library Council.

- The project hopes to stay touch about publishing Wikimedia Outreach case studies and articles on the Wikimedia blog and on the Signpost.

Strategy for Engagement

- Initiate a meeting with representatives from multiple institutional departments to talk about glam-wiki, IE: library, archives, digital preservation, education, curatorial.

METRO's Wikipedian-in-Residence's work has been unique because it is consortium-based, with a large network of potential collaborators already holding membership.

1. Difficulty in recruiting new volunteers.
Mitigating:
- Choose topical and fun Edit-a-Thon themes to get new volunteers engaged and invite thematic community groups.
- Provide Use-Cases to show Wikipedia's benefit to GLAMS as a way of showcasing resources and fulfilling institutional missions.
- Create a culture of support, acceptance, and support at all events and meetups.
- Provide online support and encouragement and check in with project managers frequently.
2. Teaching the Conflict of Interest guidelines to trainees.
Mitigating:
- Create a local GLAM community so the COI and GLAM guidelines become reinforcing and second-nature to participants.
- Check up on GLAM activity and offer suggestions.
- Seek approval of a COI guideline for every new, GLAM project.
3. Overcoming the Gender gap, and difficulty of gendered online communication.
Mitigating:
- Many librarians and archivists are women, pursue outreach to these institutions yields encouraging new women editors.
- Providing diversity training such as the Ada Initiative "Allies Workshop."
- Encourage and support female leadership.
4. Maintaining Adequate Project Accounting
Mitigating:
- Work with PEG team and other community organizations to share knowledge on measurement and evaluation.
- Designate volunteers for both financial management and reporting through the project period.
- Create event pages and image galleries for each event.
- This strategy is valuable because it is building on previous, existing, and successful outreach projects. Outreach efforts will have a continual focus on incorporating diverse cultural institutions and encouraging the editing of topics relevant to cultures and perspectives currently underrepresented in Wikipedia. This will also encourage the increasing quality of Wikipedia articles, encourage more contributors and active participation, and will focus on giving institutions the tools and understanding to develop Wikipedia projects of their own (financial sustainability). The demand for Wikipedia support is only growing in New York. Such a position will meet the interest and demand with an opportunity for the Wikimedia Foundation to grow its networks of institutional and media support and partnerships.

- This project will most directly affect English Wikipedia and GLAMs in the New York area but other projects will also be encouraged and developed including Wikimedia Commons, WikiSource, and WikiData, as well as the campaigns Wikipedia Loves Libraries, and Wiki Loves Monuments. One major benefit of this project is doing outreach with GLAMs and organizations that have previously been out of the scope of my work and obligations as WiR at METRO.
- The project will help recruit new editors, and address the editor retention issue by creating a network of institutions editing Wikipedia in New York that can share information and resources.

It thus expands the possibilities of how a WiR position can be structured.

- The work of the community fellow would also help strengthen the Wikimedia New York City Chapter by expanding projects and engagement in their ongoing activities, and seeking collaboration.
