West Bengal Wikimedians User Group held its 2024 Annual General Meeting yesterday

edit

Hello Bluerasberry!

We are sending you this message as you have signed up as a general member of the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group. We would like to inform you that the user group has organized its 2024 Annual General Meeting of Representative Members yesterday at the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata. In this meeting, we have adopted revised bylaws based on the feedback and suggestions coming from our members (see changes) and selected 10 new Representative Members based on the objective criteria set in the bylaws with regards to their recent or overall online and offline contributions. A new Representative Committee has also been formed while replacing 3 out of 5 members, who have completed their full term tenure for this responsibility. The participants have also shared learning from the projects taken from previous year and shared plans about new projects which they are willing to take during this year on behalf of the user group. We are also introducing a mentorship program from this year, where willing general members can work together with our program leads in user group programs and learn from each other. So, stay tuned for more excitements!

Difficulty in request to join Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group

edit

Hi @Bluerasberry: I would like to join this mission to increase representation of LGBTQ+ people globally regardless of place of origin, across Wikimedia. I saw the initiative recently, but unfortunately the membership form at Google Forms https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScN7CBFOxzarJ4jseQuMeYRm0NnMZCiHYwDpoL8TnXYs4EuQw/viewform seems to be no longer accepting responses.

Is there any way for interested individuals to join the initiative right now?

Can I register via email even though the 31 October, 2023 deadline for membership registration to be eligible for 2023 Elections voting has passed? —CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 11:49, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Word limit on Wikimedia Foundation elections/2024/Candidates/Lane Rasberry

edit

Please be aware that there is a word limit of 1000 words for all your answers in total. You used so far 1003 words according to my counting tool in Libre Office Writer. For only 3 words I wouldn't be that picky, but other candidates are more clearly above that limit. Please find a way to make your candidacy 3 Words shorter.

The word limit exists to limit the effort for our translators who will translate your text into several languages so that people who do not understand English can vote for you. Der-Wir-Ing ("DWI") talk 10:02, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Der-Wir-Ing: Thanks for checking. I used Google Docs and it reported 998 words.
In any case, I cut text, and now it is at 988.
Thanks for coordinating the election and best wishes for managing translation. Bluerasberry (talk) 12:30, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Optional question for Board Election candidacy

edit

A mistake in the candidate application was brought to the attention of the Election Committee, accidentally duplicating an optional question and omitting an additional optional question. The Election Committee decided that candidates may still answer the additional question, and will waive the word count limit in the case of answering this additional question. You may fill out your answer on your candidacy page. The deadline to answer the optional question is 23:59 UTC on 2 June. Please let me know if you have any questions. Discussion on the Charter on ptwiki

edit

Hello! There is ongoing discussion on the charter on ptwiki. Not too active though. I am sending this information per your request, as I understand you are looking for discussions on this topic. Best! Joalpe (talk) 14:29, 15 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Joalpe: Thanks I can feature this in the article.

What the hell...

edit

Please, edits like this are highly disruptive and create a lot of work for affiliates and hubs that you might not be aware of. I can understand the frustration, but creating work for other volunteers and staff members is not going to help fix this system... Braveheart (talk) 12:35, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Braveheart: I am really sorry. I read the page and interpreted it in a way that seemed correct, and I was confident enough that I did not think twice about it. It was not my intent to disrupt anything. I apologize for my error.
No worries from me, but sincerely and openly, if people are expressing frustration, consider what needs to happen to provide more clear language. I was trying to help. Knowing the open/closed status of applications is useful information. Bluerasberry (talk) 15:12, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification, sorry for being angry. It meant that people at the CEE Hub were seriously considering messaging every affiliate to notify them of this, and considering there should be a round 1 in autumn it would've required some serious shift in planning from quite a few affiliates :-/ But it's good to know that we're not the only ones looking at that page ;-) Best, Braveheart (talk) 16:46, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Braveheart: Your urgency is fine because it led to you contacting me. I posted on the talk page about how I came to misunderstand, see Grants_talk:Start#Sorry_for_marking_grant_as_closed. From one perspective it is a wiki page like any other so I thought to edit it, but from another perspective there is a lot of money on the line here and I was much too casual. Sunday June 23 Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network meeting (WMF BoT statement on Movement Charter ratification)

edit

A group of SWANs heading to the meeting

Hello everyone!

The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a developing forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas about current developments in the Wikimedia Movement. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for further Wikimedia 2030 strategy process work.

At this meeting we will focus on the recent statement by the WMF Board of Trustees liaisons statement on the Movement Charter in which the liaisons stated that they will be recommending the Board of Trustees not to ratify the final draft of the Movement Charter. The community and affiliate votes on the ratification are supposed to start on Tuesday, 25 June. This meeting offers a venue to discuss the situation and formulate the "next steps".

This month, we are meeting on Sunday, June 23, and you are all invited to RSVP here.

Shayi ngolu (talk) 08:30, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Shayi ngolu:
Your question is the second one I answered in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKfpT5Tg8Kg
Here is a different version of the answer in text:
You want my position about support for minority languages. The role of the trustee is to do strategic planning. Because the Wikimedia Foundation oversees spending of about US$200 million a year, then a trustee will rarely address an issue of less than US$1 million. Minority language groups typically need resource support of $2,000-$50,000 per year, per community, so a trustees will be considering them as a group who collectively need support.
There are a few challenges to address. One is that the Wikimedia community is not organized to practice democratic or community governance, and is unprepared to make a resource request on the order of $1 million for this demographic. Another issue is that the Wikimedia Foundation is spending money on minority language groups, but it does not have accounting records to be aware of where the money is going, or how what effect it has on this demographic generally over the years.
There are two things I want as a trustee, and which I think I can encourage. One is I want better financial records made public and easy to understand, so that anyone in the world can see how money is spent, especially for minority interest groups. The other is that I think the Wikimedia Foundation should sponsor the Wikimedia community to have enough governance to be able to speak for itself, and make decisions on how to spend limited resources. Without financial transparency, and without basic user governance, I think the challenges which have persisted for minority languages over the last 10 years will continue into the future.
