Activities and lessons learned

Activities

User group volunteers, Wikipedia ambassadors, education program leaders worked on promoting the idea of the prize within the Wikipedia Community and in the Egyptian universities.
Organizing volunteers divided the roles between them as shown here on the contest page (In Arabic)
Participants enrolled in the competition and the organizers reviewed their eligibility for enrollment.
Participants worked on their goals between the competition start date and the deadline.
The jury reviewed their work and announced the winners.
The winners received their prizes in the celebration conference in Cairo.

What worked well?

48% of bytes added by students during spring/summer 2014 was in September (during the contest)

The contest really motivated the participants and raised the competition spirit between them. They have added much content than expected and were able to provide a high quality content. The first winner, for example, has developed four featured and good articles in one month which is normally not expected from a new user. Have a look at Ahmed Yousri's featured and good articles on the Arabic Wikipedia: Meg Whitman, Asmaa Mahfouz, Manal al-Sharif and Lotfia ElNadi. 48% of the content Egypt Education Program students added last term were in September, during the competition. This term lasted from March 1, to September 30, 2014. The competition helped the Education Program students in Egypt to achieve the highest contributions ever in the program history (i.e. 12.38 million bytes) added last term only. The contest also helped the start of new Education Program courses focusing on women-related content. As a result, 28% of the content added by the Egyptian students last term came from these courses.

What didn't work?

Nothing is perfect, but we can say that the results were very much better than expected. We had almost no serious issues during the organization of this project. We still have a problem of lack of active volunteers especially in our offline work. Also we need to be more organized and more prepared in our future events.

What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?

I think we can repeat the same experience with the same details. We just might need to spend more time planning and looking for more help from the Arabic Wikipedia Community and offline volunteers.

Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.: Yes, the project helped us achieve much more than what we expected to consider it successful and helped achieve great results for the first time for the Wiki movement in Egypt, for the Education Program and for the Arabic Wikipedia community in general. The project, WikiWomen contest, helped encourage writing about women to help increase gender diversity on Wikipedia, helped the community recruit and encourage more female editors which guarantees more sustainability for the movement to narrow the gender gap and helped the Education Program recruit new volunteers to serve as Wikipedia ambassadors who will in turn invite their colleagues to edit Wikipedia.

Simple prizes raised the competition spirit between the participants and attracted more participants to join. Guidance and training helped a lot too!

Providing quality content was one of the measures of assessment the jury used. Participants were motivated to achieve featured and good articles to compete one another
