Activities

edit
Our team of volunteers and photographers visited two states, Lagos and Ogun State between March 25, 2016 and June 24, 2016 as planned. It was a good experience working with professional photographers who aren't previously aware of our amazing repository of media, Wikimedia Common and other Wikimedia projects except Wikipedia. However, we faced some challenges we never expected. One of our greatest mistake is under-budgeting. This is not uncommon for a pilot project like this. We earlier planned to use commercial buses to travel to the two states but we discovered this will never work when we got to the field. We later agreed to use our contingency and part of the fund allocated for other items to hire two cars, one per team which actually cost a lot. We took a lot of images in the first 10 journeys. Sadly, the external drive of Ayanfe, the photographer in possession of over 90% of the images crashed and all efforts to retrieved the images was futile. This is a major reason why our report is delayed because we spent a lot of time trying to retrieve the images and we have no fund to revisit the two states again. This was a bitter experienced!!! We managed to upload 450. Some of the images now have articles on both English and Yoruba Wikipedia and over 40% of uploaded images were used on the English and Yoruba Wikipedia.

Lessons learned

edit
What worked well?
  • Partnership with experienced photographers and easy access to object to be photographed
What didn't work?
Under-budgeting and our experience with the crashed device
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
We will ensure that we have alternative device that we serve as backup for all our images.

We also aimed to use at least 500 of these images on articles that lack these images on Wikipedia and create at least 50 new articles for at least 50 of the images.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
NO

Global Metrics

edit

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation

2. # of new editors 2
3. # of individuals involved 4

Yes, it does. In fact, User:Kaizenify is one of the professional photographer who participated in the tour. Today, he is an active member of the Wikimedia community with 100+ images uploaded to Commons. He has also created several articles on Wikipedia. User:Olufemi Simeon Adeniyi was also recruited. We met him during our journey to Ogudu, Lagos. He decided to lean more about what we were doing and about Wikimedia projects in general. Today, he is an active member of the community with 100+ images uploaded to Commons. He has also created several articles on Wikipedia.
