P1 - Digitization

Armenian encyclopedias, which are already digitized
What was done?
Several books were bought, scanned, OCRed and put on Armenian Wikisource. These books are mainly free licensed encyclopedias in Armenian, which were helpful during Summer Wikicamp. Digitization was done by WM AM volunteer David Saroyan. Digitized books are:
We also started to list the Armenian authors whose works are in public domain now. As WM AM has no scanner now and digitization are made using flatback scanners from other sources, the process is usually laborious and slowly going, the quality of scanned books are not high. It was decided to buy the DIY scanner instead of Plustek Opticbook A300 book scanner, previously mentioned in the grant. Appointment was made to purchase a DIY scanner in November. However, as there was DIY scanner available, we were put on pre-ordered list.
What will be done?
  • Complete the list of Armenian authors whose works are in public domain.
  • Buy DIY scanner.
  • Scan all books mentioned in the grant.

Wiki loves Science, First weekend
In order to teach Wikipedia editing basics more deeply Wikimedia Armenia organized an editing weekend within Wiki loves science project for young scientists and students. All participants were editors who during previous workshops showed interest to wiki editing and wanted to learn more about wiki movement, editing tools, article creation etc. WLS First Weekend took place on September 12-14 in Tsakhkadzor. The Internet was provided free by VivcaCell MTS mobile operator. The schedule of the Weekend was planned beforehand. Along with mastering wiki editing tools participants were creating articles in their field of study. 19 participants and 4 organization team members took part in the Weekend. First Weekend's accommodation and food was funded by Intellectual Renaissance foundation, only transportation was paid by WM AM.
WLS Second Weekend took place on October 24-26 in Aghveran[2][3]. 26 participants and 4 organization team members took part in the Weekend. This Weekend was funded by Intelectual Renaissance Foundation.
WLS Weekends were very effective, but Intelectual Renaissance Foundation could not fund further due financial crisis in Russia (see section P4 - Educational Programs/Winter Wikicamp 2015 for details). Therefore, it was decided to organize WLS Third Weekend using funds provided for WLS Stationary, Memorabilia & Prizes for competitions. WLS third Weekend took place on November 28-30 in Aghveran․ 28 participants and 3 organization team members took part in the Weekend.
WLS project is very important for development of Armenian Wikipedia. During the project many professionals were involved in the editing of Wikipedia and enriched wiki with high quality articles. Part of these participants became active editors.

Organization team included Dato Abuladze, Susanna Mkrtchyan, Arsen Harutyunyan, Nazeli Kamsaryan, Nune Nadiryan. Campers were mainly from wiki clubs of Aparan and Eghvard. They had a great desire to participate in such a camp, the initiative was theirs. The latter applied to Wikimedia Armenia for assistance. There was a participation fee and all campers paid for participation. Only the transportation was provided by WM AM. Campers were divided into 2 groups - experienced and new editors. Experienced editors and their trainers mainly concentrated on article translation from Russian and English Wikipedias. The second group mastered their editing skills using ASE articles, learnt new techniques and tools in Wikipedia.

Group photo of Winter Wikicamp 2015
Wikimedia Armenia previously having an agreement with Intellectual Renaissance Foundation to organize a 5-day Winter Wikicamp for Wikipedia Education program active students began preparations of the camp. At the end of December Russian financial crisis began which has affected the Russian economy, both consumers and companies, as well as having a negative impact on regional financial markets. The camp sponsor Intellectual Renaissance which is funded from Russia refused to cover the camp expenses. As the dates of the camp were already announced in Press conference and the participants were chosen and informed, we couldn't cancel the camp. We tried to find another sponsor in a short time but couldn't manage so we had to spend WM AM Annual Grant funds provided for Residents in Matenadaran and Erebuni museum (600 000 AMD), a part of Education program fund (600 000 AMD) and Unforeseen expenses (900,000 AMD). See financial expenses section below.
49 campers (of which 6 payable), 6 organization team members and 5 group leaders participated in the camp, all in all 60 participants. The participants created 997, improved 14 articles in Wikipedia, and improved 576 articles in Wictionary.

Lessons learned

edit
What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?
What went well, or is going well?
P2 - Wiki Loves Science - The project is going well, we have 127 new participants instead of 40 written in the grant. The editors have added 1600 (instead of 500) and improved 515 articles. Though we have overdone our project it isn't finished yet (We try to find sponsors for the project).
P3 – Support and Increase active WikiClubs: - The project is very successful. We try to involve more people in other regions and cities to open more clubs.
P4 - Educational Programs - Educational programs are also very successful. The students participate in the project with great pleasure and enthusiasm. We plan to involve more schools.
P6 - Expand Wiki Commons - The project is in the progress.
P7 - International Projects - We have received our editor guest from Estonia and sent our editor to Estonia. Some of WM AM team members and other editors have participated in several conferences, learned new things and returning home shared their ideas with other editors.
P8 - General Wikimedia Office management - The reconstruction is in the progress.
P9 - Activities that lead to the introduction of Western Armenian as a language in Wikipedia - Activities that lead to the introduction of Western Armenian as a language in Wikipedia - 30,000 USD grant was funded by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Calouste Gulbenkian foundation) for "Wikimedia in Western Armenian" project to establish and develop Western Armenian Wikipedians community.
What did not go well, or is not going well?
P1 - Digitization - Purchasing the scanner was postponed due to the fact, that there was no scanner available. As soon as the scanner is available and bought we'll immediately start and scan the rest of the books written in the grant.
P5 – GLAM - This project is going very slowly, because it is very difficult to cooperate and make appointments with Ministry of Culture. However, we are trying to find new approaches and organize workshops, involve new institutions and people in the GLAM project.
From your answers above, do you plan to change anything you are doing as your project continues?
We only want to organize more Wiki Loves Science weekends if we find another sponsors.

Outcomes and impact

edit

Outcomes

edit
Provide the original project goal here.
The goal of the project is to digitize Armenian Encyclopedias and systematize digitization of historical bibliographical books and books that are in public domain or becoming public domain, currently. We are going enlarge amount of schools which are involved in educational project. The successful experience of Wiki clubs in Yerevan and Gyumri (middle level) was disseminated to other cities of Armenia. It will also grow the number of active editors in the Armenian Wikipedia and double membership in Wikimedia Armenia. In addition, it will take minor steps towards long term sustainability. It will extend active use of Wikipedia by the Armenians in the diaspora who look for content in Western Armenian.
Do you expect to reach your project's goal? Why or why not?
Yes. We have succeeded in majority of our projects and we will move forward to the completion of our goal.
