Grant Proposal
edit- M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.
WLEBR2023
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
The lush and diverse natural landscapes of Brazil are truly awe-inspiring. From the vast stretches of the Amazon rainforest to the stunning waterfalls of Iguazu, the country boasts a myriad of protected natural sites that showcase its rich biodiversity. However, there is a significant problem - the scarcity of free photographs on these sites limits their potential for raising awareness and promoting them to a larger audience.
The paucity of images makes it challenging for people to learn about and appreciate these natural treasures, leaving them underappreciated and underutilized. To address this problem, efforts must be made to increase the number of free photographs of Brazilian-protected natural sites, making it easier for people to learn about and appreciate them. This will help promote the importance of preserving these sites and encourage more people to visit them, thus supporting conservation efforts.
Despite Brazil's vast and unique biodiversity, the country is experiencing a significant loss of it, primarily due to factors such as deforestation, land use changes, and climate change. One of the most devastating consequences of biodiversity loss is the endangerment of many animal species in Brazil. Habitat destruction, hunting, and climate change are among the main factors contributing to this problem.
This loss of biodiversity has dire consequences on ecosystems and the services they provide, as well as human well-being. It is essential to raise awareness about the loss of biodiversity in Brazil and the importance of protecting and conserving it. Increasing public knowledge and understanding can encourage people to take action to reduce their impact on the environment and support conservation efforts.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
We will use our already 3 years of experience with the contest and improve our bases by creating more content for social media, a strategy that has proven to be the most effective in Brazil.
- Social media campaign for Wiki Loves Earth
- We will create a social media campaign to promote the Wiki Loves Earth initiative. This will involve creating and sharing high-quality content across various social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok to raise awareness and generate interest among the wider public. We will also encourage users to engage with the campaign after uploading their photos at Wikimedia Commons and tagging us in their social media, increasing the web of individuals who are passionate about nature and conservation, and who can help to spread the word about this important initiative. The content will include information about the contest, how to participate, and the benefits of contributing to the project.
- Influencer marketing for Wiki Loves Earth
- The second strategy is to leverage the power of influencer marketing to reach a wider audience and increase engagement with the Wiki Loves Earth campaign. We will identify and reach out to social media influencers who have a significant following and a strong interest in environmental issues, and invite them to promote the campaign on their channels. By partnering with these influencers, we can tap into their existing audience and leverage their credibility and influence to drive engagement and increase awareness of the campaign. We will also provide influencers with resources such as high-quality images and information about the initiative to help them create engaging content that resonates with their followers. This strategy has been proven to be effective in previous Wiki Loves Earth Brazil, and we are confident it will help to drive engagement and increase participation in WLE BR 2023
- Develop tutorials to simplify the entry of Wikimedia Commons
- We will create a series of tutorials and guides that simplify the use of Wikimedia Commons for potential contributors. These tutorials will cover topics such as how to upload images, how to add metadata to images, and how to categorize images. We will also provide detailed instructions on how to participate in the Wiki Loves Earth contest. By providing easy-to-understand tutorials, we hope to encourage more people to participate in the contest and increase the number and quality of entries.
- We already have high-quality material that will be updated for the current year, and reshared via social media, and the website of the contest.
- The tutorials are expected to make it easier for new contributors to understand the platform and start contributing.
- Simplify the upload at Wikimedia Commons for the contest
- To make it easier for the participants of WLE, we will prepare the Upload Wizard to receive these newcomers, and also update the list of conservation units, creating a very straight line for the participant.
- We understand that more than just a photo, this is a piece of educational material, and including more information increases the potential for use.
- We already did this for previous years, and we improve every year.
- By providing easy-to-understand tutorials, we hope to encourage more people to participate in the contest and increase the number and quality of entries.
- Train jury members to understand and answer questions about Wikimedia Commons and Wiki Loves Earth
- To ensure that the judging process is fair and consistent, we will provide training for our jury members. This will include instructions on how to evaluate the quality based on Wikimedia Envoriment's point of view. Also, how to answer questions from participants about the contest rules and requirements, Wikimedia Commons and our values. The training will be conducted online and supplemented with reference materials that jury members can consult during the judging process.
- Jury members who are well-trained will be able to evaluate contributions effectively, provide feedback to contributors, and ensure the quality of the contest. This will increase the credibility of the contest and motivate more contributors to participate in future WLE and other activities.
- Create more vias to receive questions
- We will create multiple ways for contributors to receive and answer questions about Wiki Loves Earth and Wikimedia Commons, primarily through social media.
- We will create a dedicated FAQ section on the website, and a team to answer questions via email, via discussion page, and via social media accounts on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The social media accounts will be used to share updates about the contest, answer questions from contributors, and engage with the community.
- With the majority of internet users being active on social media, using social media as a primary channel to answer questions will make it more accessible to a larger audience. Social media also allows for quicker and more immediate responses to questions, as well as the ability to reach a wider audience. By creating a presence on multiple social media platforms, the project can reach a diverse range of contributors and provide them with multiple avenues for support.
- Additionally, by answering questions about the contest and Wikimedia Commons, we will be able to build relationships with participants and encourage them to continue contributing to Wikimedia Environment.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
- As a prize a 3-day photo expedition to a Brazilian unit of conservation (UC) with 2 jury members and 2 winners, we will be developing the following activities
- Photography sessions: This will be the core activity of the expedition. Multiple photography sessions to capture the wildlife and their natural habitat. We will provide the necessary guidance and support to the participants to ensure they are able to capture stunning photos that showcase the beauty of the UC.
- Critique sessions: After each photography session where the participants will have the opportunity to showcase their best photos to the jury members and receive feedback on how to improve their photography skills. This will help the participants learn and grow as photographers. Also, have informal sessions where the jury members will share their experiences and insights on wildlife photography. This will create a community of like-minded photographers who can continue to support each other beyond the expedition.
- After the expedition, photos made in the expedition will be uploaded to Commons.
- Photo exhibition of previous winners of Wiki Loves Earth in Brazil
- Selection of photos: We will select the best photos from the previous Wiki Loves Earth competitions in Brazil to showcase in the exhibition. We will also consider the theme and create a narrative to connect all the photos.
- Exhibition design: We will design an exhibition that will showcase the selected photos in the best possible way. We will consider the lighting, framing, and placement of the photos to create a visually stunning exhibition that will attract visitors.
- Promotion: We will promote the exhibition through various channels including social media, and email campaigns. We will also collaborate with local organizations to help promote the exhibition to a wider audience. This will help raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and photography as a means to document the beauty of nature, consequently WLE.

Photos of Brazil's diverse ecosystems can help raise awareness about biodiversity conservation and protect ecosystems from threats such as deforestation and climate change. These photos can also enhance educational materials and engage learners in a more meaningful way. Adding photos of Brazil's biodiversity to Wikimedia Envoriment can reduce bias and promote greater geographic and ecological diversity, making these projects more inclusive and representative of the world's natural heritage.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Human Rights, Climate Change and sustainability
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
Our target participants are Brazilians interested in nature photography and environmental conservation, looking closely at the less represented part of the population at the Wikimedia Environment. We will engage them through various means, including social media outreach, targeted email campaigns, and personal invitations to participate in Wiki Loves Earth. We'll be promoting our events through social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as reaching out to local photography groups and associations to spread the word and encourage participation. Also, a photo exhibition of the previous participants of the WLE.
After the contest, we're planning a fun and exciting photo expedition to keep the momentum going. We'll be exploring local areas of interest and offering opportunities for participants to meet like-minded people, learn new skills, and engage with the Wikimedia community. To retain participants after these events, we're creating a supportive network of photographers where participants can share their work, seek feedback, and continue learning from one another. We'll also offer workshops for those who wish to further develop their skills and contribute to Wikimedia Environment through photography.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

edit- 15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?
We get to some questions that we want to answer by the end of WLE: How many contributors and photos WLE brought? How have participants' perspectives on biodiversity conservation changed after participating? What factors could motivate participants to continue contributing to Wikimedia Envoriment after the WLE? What were the barriers? How effective was the WLE in bringing in new participants or communities? Did participants feel welcome, safe, and supported during the WLE? What were some ongoing challenges? Did participants gain the skills and motivation necessary to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects? Did new organizers develop the skills and motivation needed to continue participating as organizers? What types of support and activities are most interesting to participants who want to learn more about the Wikimedia community?
