Running the WLE using social media as support for advertisement.

Increasing the number of members of the jury was a good strategy, as they could use their social media to spread the contest.

B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community | Agree |
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups | Not applicable to your fund |
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives | Agree |
E. Encourage the retention of editors | Neither agree nor disagree |
F. Encourage the retention of organizers | Agree |

Part 2: Your main learning
edit6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?
Wikipedia, consequently Wikimedia, is losing brand penetration in Brazil, making it harder to work with certain ages. Also, photography is losing its importance in the country.
7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?
We decided not to run a campaign on Twitter due to the website's current policies. We made an effort to increase our participation on Instagram. Instagram has an okay reach when paid but no reach when trying organic content. However, it has a giant problem: It has a very dissociative culture, so people reach the content, but it does not become a conversion.
Last year (WLE2022), 2/3 of the people who reached the contest page were through Twitter, around 1/4 from Instagram, and the rest from media and general notice (that we could not track, as the adm didn't want to collaborate with us and create his text, material, and link).
In 2023, nearly 100% of people reached the contest's page via Instagram. So, away more energy and money were put in for fewer results.
8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?
Yes, we will change the activity. We have been studying our data and will have to create a different approach; WLM also had troubles in Brazil.
9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics
edit10a. Open Metrics reporting
In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

10b. Core Metrics reporting
In your application, you defined targets for some core metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with each core metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Note: a table will appear for each Wikimedia project content contribution you defined in your proposal.
Core metrics | Description | Target | Results | Comments | Methodology |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Number of participants | |||||
200 | 141 | As mentioned, the usage of Instagram was not enough to outrun the lack of a Twitter campaign; we had away more views on our social media platform reaching more than 200% more, and almost 75% fewer clicks. | https://wikiloves.toolforge.org/earth/2023/Brazil | ||
Number of editors | as previous WLEBR | 20 | 25 | https://wikiloves.toolforge.org/earth/2023/Brazil | |
Number of organizers | 25 | 40 | We boosted the number of jury, increasing the minds of the content producers, and we now have a solid team for the following years. |
Wikimedia Project | Description | Target | Results | Comments | Methodology |

Wikimedia Commons | |||||
3483 | 1954 | We could not fully understand why the average contribution dropped from 17.5 (2022) to 13.8 (2023) photos per capita, as well as the quality of the photos. We believe that we had more photographers in the early stages of photography contributing and fewer full-time photographers and specialists. The last two were away more present on our Twitter, and not much on our Instagram. | https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Earth_2023_in_Brazil | ||
