6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

It is agreed by the global community that the world’s climate is changing radically and will continue to change at unprecedented rates if no measures are taken. Tanzania is a victim of the impacts brought about by increased climate variability and climate change. The meteorological stations in the country reveal a significant increase in temperature trends and anticipate a 1.7 Degree Celsius increase over the Northeastern areas of the country, shift in rainfall patterns, drought, flooding, desertification, land degradation, loss of biodiversity, and emission of greenhouse gasses (https://faolex.fao.org/docs/pdf/tan191137.pdf)

However, the representation of Tanzania’s context in climate-related topics such as Deforestation, Flooding, Land Degradation, and Drought on Wikipedia is very limited. A query run with the list-building tool yields a few articles with climate content relating to Tanzania (https://list-building.toolforge.org/?lang=en&title=Climate_change_in_Tanzania&k-results=200) A general search using Petscan about Deforestation, Flooding, Land degradation, and loss of biodiversity yields zero results (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=27260264). This creates content, contribution, and reader gaps. To bridge these gaps, local people with real climate experiences should be empowered to grow information about climate change literacy in Tanzania which is important to users of Wikipedia to cultivate a positive mindset about climate change. This project seeks to build local knowledge about climate change and its mitigation strategies for Swahili Wikipedia users. Through this work, we hope to raise awareness among stakeholders, reduce environmental pollution, improve green infrastructure, and mobilize for climate action for a sustainable future in Tanzania. We believe that this project would build synergy that aligns with the Tanzania National Environmental Policy (NEP) of 1997 by growing local knowledge that supports the implementation strategies for priority areas around environmental concerns.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Create awareness about climate change impacts and mitigation strategies in Tanzania Engage in a talk show with Azam TV Tanzania to reach the local populace on how we are building local knowledge about Tanzania's climate change impacts and mitigation strategies through the project in the digital space. We would also partner with Women and Technology Tanzania and the Foundation for Environmental Protection in Tanzania (FEPT) to reach women experiencing the climate reality to learn the importance of sharing local knowledge about the crisis in Tanzania. We would also leverage social media platforms to reach more audiences and communities. Build the knowledge of local participants on how to contribute climate change content to Wikimedia projects. Organize in-person and online training for newbies, university students, and experienced Wikimedians to learn how to contribute climate change content to Swahili Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Build knowledge about climate change impacts in the Swahili language. Organize Photowalk activity, upload sessions, writing, and translation contests/activities to contribute content relating to climate change on Swahili Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Captions for such images would be uploaded in English and Swahili. Experienced editors would translate and create new articles relating to climate change on Swahili and English Wikipedia.
