Ilesa is one of the metropolises in Osun State, a significant urban center renowned for its cultural and educational heritage in Nigeria, home to a thriving community of about a million residents, and one of the largest cities in Osun State. The city is home to a number of institutions of higher learning, including the University of Ilesa and the Osun State College of Health Technology, among others.
The city is equally at an advantage, with several educational clubs hosted by the city, such as writers clubs, readers associations, and student associations, contributing their essence to its intellectual and cultural vibrancy. In spite of all these great strides, Wikimedia's growth awareness is lacking in the Ilesa community, leading to a lack or shortage of editors and initiatives in the city.
As an enthusiastic member of this community who has successfully led projects in related capacities and shared in the common vision of the Wikimedia Foundation, I feel a strong responsibility to carry out the first Wikimedia awareness campaign and training program in Ilesa. This project intends to foster the recruitment of new editors and the growth of existing ones, which will ignite the emergence of dedicated editors for Wikimedia projects. By establishing Wikipedia and its sister projects' awareness in Ilesa, Wikimedia projects will be widely accepted and utilized by residents of the community, particularly youths and students.
Wikipedia, being widely respected as a trusted information source, can bolster the city's recognition both domestically and internationally by furnishing precise, updated information about its environs and endeavors. This proposed Wikimedia Awareness Program will equally amplify the city's global visibility and the credibility of information about the ancient city when residents of the community are trained on how to contribute to Wikipedia and her sister's project.
This proposed project will address the gaps that currently exist in various articles across different topics; these include elevating the coverage of notable local and international scholars, organizations, tourist attractions, and historical sites in Ilesa and Osun State at large on Wikipedia. This project will establish a community of Wikipedia editors in the city to keep participants engaged with ongoing and future Wikimedia-related activities.
Addressing this concern, our experienced Wikimedia editor plans to launch these awareness campaigns, both online and offline, highlighting the credibility and notability of Wikimedia projects for residents in Ilesa, Osun State. Another critical objective is to dispel the notion that Wikipedia content is static and machine-generated, as this awareness campaign will equally recruit new editors who are residents of this community. This endeavor will cultivate interest in the city, leading to substantial enhancements in Wikimedia contents. To ensure the project's sustainability, the formation of the Ilesa Wikimedia Community is a pivotal step. This will be a united platform to bring participants together after the campaign to collectively address challenges encountered during their contribution to Wikimedia projects, ensuring the initiative's lasting success.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The project will span for a month, and its aim is to introduce Wikimedia to the Ilesa community through a comprehensive approach:
- 1. Awareness about Wikipedia and its sister's project will be carried out by me and members of my team by visiting the University of Ilesa and the College of Technology Ilesa campuses to distribute fliers about the event. Social media platforms (Facebook, WhatsApp and X) will be used to reach wider audience
- 2. A two-day physical training: a two-day physical training for participants to receive hands-on training on essential Wikimedia skills, account creation, and basic edits. The first physical training will be in the first week of the campaign, and the second one will be in the last week of the campaign.
- 2. Two sets of online sessions: the first session will be a follow-up for the first physical training, where participant challenges will be addressed. The second online session will be in the third week of the project timeline, where participants will be introduced to Wikidata and Wikicommons. Facilitators will guide these sessions, targeting areas where participants require improvement.
- 3. Feedback Review and Session: At the end of this period, a review session will take place. This session will involve assessing participants' progress, addressing queries, and presenting certificates to exceptional contributors. There will be a dedicated WhatsApp group to serve as a platform for interaction between participants and facilitators.
- 4. Establishing a Wikimedia editors community in Ilesa: The project will birth the creation of a sustainable editors community in Ilesa.
These activities plan to introduce the Ilesa community to Wikipedia, recruit new Wikimedia editors, equip them with editing skills, and establish a community of Wikimedia editors.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The target participants for our project are the diverse youth population in the city of Ilesa, and no prior experience with Wikimedia is necessary to participate. A significant percentage of these youths are students of institutions of higher learning in the community. Potential participants will be engaged through collaboration with student associations in the community and leveraging media and massive publicity to connect with these potential participants before the project's implementation.
During the project, my team will actively engage in facilitating training sessions, ensuring that participants gain the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to Wikipedia and its sister projects. Edits made by these new editors will be closely monitored to prevent vandalism and misinformation that may come from them as new editors.
To ensure sustainability, a WhatsApp group will be created where participants will stay in touch to express their concerns, share their challenges with facilitators, including their progress, discuss Wikimedia projects, and stay updated about the Wikimedia movement. Additionally, the Ilesa Wikimedian Hub will be welcomed into the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria to ensure continued engagement and participation in Wikimedia projects.
