The Yoruba Wikimedians User Group is a group of Yoruba language Wikimedians committed to nurturing, developing, improving, and promoting Yoruba language Wikipedia and other related projects such as the Yoruba Wiktionary in the Wikimedia incubator, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia projects.
We aim to promote the use of Yoruba Wikipedia through various outreach efforts and to support people in Nigeria in contributing to knowledge in the Yoruba language. We have grown the Yoruba Wikipedia from a bot-created encyclopedia into a human-created encyclopedia via various outreach efforts, partnership development, and capacity building for volunteers. It has become a viable community of active contributors, and we want to continue to grow and sustain the community. We want to bridge the gap between the academic and Yoruba Wikimedia communities, an effort we started last year through the donation of our audiovisuals of indigenous vocations to academic institutions.
We want to sustain this effort and its long-term impact of recruiting academics, scholars, and subject-matter experts for Yoruba Wikipedia. We have built partnerships with strong organizations such as the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture, whose core objectives align neatly with our mission, and collaborated with Wikimedia affiliates such as the Wikimedia UK, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, the Deoband Community Wikimedia, and others. We want to sustain these partnerships and collaborations through the implementation of pragmatic projects with long-term impact on the Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. We want to continue to build capacity for our volunteers and staff members, and we hope to achieve this via the implementation of our structured training plans. Our target participants would include but not be limited to Yoruba academicians, scholars, students, teachers, authors, staff members of mission-aligned organizations, and Yoruba enthusiasts recruited via our Yoruba Wiki Radio Show and via other activities such as photography contests and article writing contests.
As part of growing our structured communities and increasing our volunteer pool, we want to provide adequate support for our existing fan clubs, such as the Yoruba Wikimedia Fan Club at the University of Lagos, and establish new clubs. In this round, we want to activate a fan club at the University of Ibadan. This was discussed with the department management during the donation of our audiovisual works this year. We aimed to establish only two fan clubs in this round to allow us to effectively manage them. To improve the learning and evaluation of our program, we aim to hire a learning and evaluation officer to support the volunteers. We want to keep engaging community members through some long-term impactful projects that align with the Wikimedia Movement's 2030 strategy.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
Below are the activities we are developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies.
- Training: A series of training sessions would be organized and conducted according to our training plan. Each training session would be led by experienced community members. Participants in our training would include existing community members, new editors, partners, and staff members, with no preference for gender or sexual orientation. At the end of each training session, the participants would be grouped, and mentors would be assigned to them to guide them through the learning process. After the mentorship, tasks such as new article creation would be assigned to the participants, and their performance would be evaluated.
- Content drives: To engage our community, recruit new editors, and add new content to Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, we will organize a series of content drives and participate in existing global community content drives. Last year, we started an initiative to expand short articles on Yoruba Wikipedia. We want to sustain the initiative and develop new content drives. We will organize Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Folklore, Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos, WikiGap, and 1Lib1Ref, etc..
- Edit-a-thon : We will organize a series of edit-a-thon to create new articles, and improve existing articles. Each edit-a-thon would be structured to focus on specific thematic areas of topics. Our translation-a-thon would focus on specific thematic areas as well. Participants in our edit-a-thon would include existing community members, new editors, partners, and staff members,
- GLAM project: Last year, we worked on the audiovisuals of indigenous Yoruba vocations that are going into extinction owing to the advent of technology. A total of 20 audiovisuals were recorded and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and the Internet Archive. The audiovisuals were also donated to academic institutions such as the University of Lagos and the University of Ibadan. We plan to continue these efforts, and this time we plan to increase our targets by at least 50%. I.e., we plan to create 30 audiovisuals this year.
- Wikipedia in Residence (WiR): Last year, we secured a partnership with the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture. This collaboration was widely publicized in the media, including in the Guardian Newspapers. The center has thousands of Yoruba books that can be used to write new articles and cited as sources for existing ones. They have agreed to work with Wikipedia in residence as part of our partnership. They would provide the WiR with internet, an office space, and a small training hall.
- Yoruba Wiki Radio Program: One of our strategies to promote Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in Nigeria is through our weekly radio program, where we talk about the Yoruba Wikipedia and how the listeners can contribute. It has also been used as a recruitment strategy, as many new editors have been recruited through the program. We want to sustain this effort. Last year, we were only able to air eight episodes. This year, we want to increase it to 12 episodes.
- Central Notice Banner Campaign: We often recruit new editors via the central notice banner campaign in a project called "Recruit readers as writers." The scope of this project focuses on using the "Central Notice banner" to recruit volunteers for Yoruba Wikipedia. We will host a central notice banner on large language Wikipedia that are frequently visited from Nigeria, and a simple form will be attached to the banner, asking Wikipedia readers who are native speakers of Yoruba to complete the form and participate in a training on how to contribute to the Yoruba language Wikipedia. The applicants are trained on how to contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
- Social media engagement: social media remains one of our most effective platforms for sharing information with community members and the general public. We have a well-designed social media plan that will be strictly followed by our social media intern. We also plan to collaborate with social media influencers. Last year, we collaborated with Mr. Macaroni on a project called Mr Macaroni Skit for Yoruba Wikipedia.
- Partnership building: To enhance our activities, promote diversity, create new opportunities for growth, and strengthen our group, we will partner with mission-aligned organizations on specific projects, sustain existing ones, and build long-term relationships through continuous engagement and collaborations.

We will ensure that our projects and activities are inclusive, representative, and diverse. We will archive this by partnering with mission-aligned organizations, including cultural centers, libraries, museums, and archives. We will engage with underrepresented groups such as women and PWDs and provide the necessary support for our volunteers. This would involve hosting editing workshops and meetups, organizing edit-a-thons, and providing training and mentorship to new contributors. We will collaborate with other Wikimedia affiliates to engage community members.

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?
Retaining new editors, particularly those that are new to the Wikimedia movement, comes with its own challenges, but below are some of our strategies to retain new editors, including people who are new to our community.
- Identify what interests participants: Understanding the interest and the intrinsic motivation of new participants is crucial, as it would give us an idea of what could keep them around for a long time. We would do this through surveys, direct feedback, social media engagement, and other forms of learning tools.
- Mentorship: Following a training session, experienced mentors would be assigned to mentor the participants. The mentors would guide them through the learning process and assign tasks to them at the end of the mentorship program.
- Engagement: Continuous engagement is one of the most effective strategies for retaining volunteers. This could be achieved through event hosting, including editing workshops and meetups, organizing edit-a-thons, and providing training and mentorship to new contributors. Participants would also be engaged through social media by posting on social media about their works and contributions to Yoruba Wikipedia.
- Provision of incentives: We will provide incentives in the form of internet data, souvenirs as prizes, and other recognition. This would encourage participants to continue to participate in our activities and programs.
- Roles and task assignment: We will assign tasks and roles to participants as a way to engage them and keep them active in the community.
- Creation of audiovisual contents: The creation of audiovisual contents and posting on social media could attract new participants. This strategy was adopted in 2022, and the post about the Yoruba indigenous vocation audiovisuals received much engagement when compared to other contents, and at least 5 new members who found our video interesting joined our community.
12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?
We will keep our volunteers safe from any forms of harassment and abuse. This would be achieved through the following strategies:
- Provision of the UCoC: We will bring the Universal Code of Conduct to the attention of community members and participants, including those that are new to the Wikimedia movement. We will stress the importance of the UCoC and the need to abide strictly by its provisions.
- Enforcement of the UCoC: We will enforce the UCoC where necessary, and this will be communicated in advance to the affected members. We will also provide a platform and opportunity to submit an appeal where necessary. In some extreme cases, such as child pornography or threats to life, we will report to the Wikimedia Trust and Safety Team.
- Channels for complaints: We will share specific emails with the community to log a complaint and seek redress. In some extreme cases, such as child pornography, threats to life, and physical assault, we will report to the Wikimedia Trust and Safety Team for further action.
In general, we create an equitable, representative, diverse, and enabling environment for all community members and participants.

We will collaborate internationally with some Wikimedia affiliates, such as the Deoband Community Wikimedia, on content creation and with some Wikimedia affiliates in Nigeria on specific projects, such as the Wikimania 2023 local event in Nigeria, as we did last year. We may also collaborate with these groups on some Wikimedia photography contests, such as "Wiki Loves Monuments" and "Wiki Loves Earth."

- International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture: Last year, we secured a partnership with the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture. This partnership received significant attention in the media, including in The Guardian. The International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture, also known as the "Yoruba World Centre," is a nonprofit organization with the aim to promote, preserve, and transmit the Yoruba language to its users and serve as a go-to place for rich content and materials relating to the Yoruba language, people, history, culture, and heritage.
- The center has thousands of Yoruba books that can be used to write new articles and cited as sources for existing ones. They have agreed to work with Wikipedia in residence as part of our partnership. They would provide the WiR with internet, an office space, and a small training hall.
- University of Ibadan: In 2022, we donated our audiovisual recording of Yoruba indigenous vocation to the university. The event took place at the Department of Linguistics and African Studies, and it was attended by the faculty dean and at least seven professors. During the event, we talked about a potential partnership with the institutions, especially the Department of Linguistics and African Studies, to train academic staff and students on how to contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia. The university was excited about such collaboration and agreed to partner with us on capacity building for academic staff and students. There would also be a similar partnership with the University of Lagos.
- Egbe Akomolede: We plan to partner with Egbe Akomolede, a Yoruba language association that consists of Yoruba teachers, scholars, authors, and academics. Their president was our guest in the 4th episode of the Wiki Radio Show, and we have launched a discussion around partnerships.
- Atelewo In 2020, we partnered with Atelewo to train Yoruba language students, author and Yoruba enthusiasts. We want to sustain this partnership
- In general, we are open to more partnerships to enhance the effectiveness of our programs and activities.
- The John Randle Center for Yoruba Culture and History was launched in January 2023 by the Lagos State Government as a cultural center to preserve the Yoruba heritage through the preservation of history and culture. There is a plan to donate our audiovisual works to this cultural center, and this would steer our discussion around partnerships. We believe that the donation of our audiovisual material would be the highlight of their motivation towards partnership.
15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?
We are already having a discussion around the sustainability and scalability of our work. Our major challenge is a lack of funding. For example, we are looking for external funding support for some of our key programs, such as the audiovisuals of Yoruba Indigenous vocations. We started a discussion with Wikimedia Deutschland in 2022 on funding opportunities, including exploring the Arcadia fund to support the program, but Wikimedia Deutschland could not move forward with the application due to their internal reasons. We are also looking for a partner to provide funding support for the Yoruba Wiki Radio Show. One organization agreed to fund four episodes of the Yoruba Wiki Radio Show this year. We would continue to explore more funding opportunities to sustain these projects in the long term.
