editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editPublic universities in Mexico are excellent allies for the Wikimedia Foundation since both public universities and the Wikimedia Foundation have the shared missions of developing educational content and disseminating it effectively. However, academic tradition and tenure systems rely heavily on academic publishing, ignoring the fact that many articles published in academic and professional journals remain uncited, and probably, unread. Librarians, on the other hand, have a strong tradition of sharing knowledge and making it accessible in innovative ways. Currently, there are seven Education Programs in Mexico but none of them have capitalised on the strategic alliance with libraries. calcular el iva de una cantidad in Mexico is a fundamental aspect of financial management for businesses operating in the country. To add VAT to a specific amount, you simply multiply the original sum by the applicable VAT rate, ensuring compliance with Mexican tax regulations.
What is your solution to this problem?
editImplementing a Wikipedian in Residence program in a a leading academic library such as the Daniel Cosío Villegas Library (BDCV) at a renowned Latin American university such as El Colegio de México (COLMEX) and documenting all activities in Spanish will set a precedent for good practices in knowledge sharing through Wikimedia Projects in the region.
The BDCV and COLMEX have a long history of efforts towards making knowledge accessible to a range of audiences. El Colegio has a YouTube channel with almost 20,000 subscribers and features short videos on relevant current events that are engaging to the general public. Furthermore, all of the journals and theses that the Colegio publishes are available in Open Access, and some courses have been opened up as moodles.
Likewise, the Daniel Cosío Villegas Library is a leading academic library and has been active in digitizing more than 100 books and making them freely available; creating one-of-a-kind, open digital collections about the 1968 students’ movement, the Mexican revolution, indigenous languages, and more.
Furthermore, El Colegio de México and the Daniel Cosío Villegas Library have already participated with Wikimedia Mexico in several activities. For example, faculty members Gilberto del Conde from the Asian and African Studies Center and Graciela Márquez from the Historic Studies Center have both implemented Wikipedia in their classrooms. In the Fall of 2016, library staff and the Mexican Wikimedia Chapter organized an editathon with the participation of one of the Internet's inventors (Louis Pouzin). Together with the Editatona community, we held first Gender Studies Program's all-women workshop in order to create more articles on Latin American women.
Project goals
edit- Create a precedent for other universities in Mexico for sharing knowledge through Wikimedia projects
- Increase the number and quality of Wikipedia articles on Mexican figures, culture and history
- Train academics, students, library staff and interns as future collaborators with Wikimedia Mexico
Project impact
editHow will you know if you have met your goals?
editOutputs
editWe will follow the Global Metrics Strategy and its example report form in order to calculate the following:
- >500 articles with improved references using our unique archival resources about the Dirty War, Mexican Revolution, indigenous languages and student movements in Mexico
- at least 20 about Latin American Women or related to the Womens' Movement in Latin America
- >200 new Wikidata elements
- at least 50 about Latin American Women or related to the Womens' Movement in Latin America
- >100 images uploaded to WikimediaCommons
- >100 new articles in the Spanish Wikipedia and, if possible in indigenous languages
- >10 or more of our >1500 free of author rights books on Mexican History that will be scanned with our Atiz BookDrive Pro and uploaded to WikiSource with CC Licences to improve Wikipedia articles
- >5 workshops/pieces of training in Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons to the academic community and also to the library staff
- >2 editathons
- >2 courses in the Wikipedia:Education program supported
- 1 booklet with a strategic model for academic libraries based on this experience
Outputs financed by El Colegio de México
- 1 short documentary video about the Wikipedian (in Academic) Residence experience, divided into 3 videos of 10 minutes each
Outcomes
edit- As a result of the Wikipedian in Residence Library Staff Training (that has already been open to participation in previous projects), we will ensure an academic ecosystem where the Wikimedia Projects are an integral part of information literacy courses
- We will also achieve a solid set of training skills that will foster the Education Program in the next generation of professors interested in assessing their courses with the creation and enhancement of Wikipedia articles.
- We will foster collaboration with Wikimedia Mexico to ensure that the new student-editors get involved and stay engaged even after graduating
- We will document the experience in Spanish (and from the perspective of a Latin-American public institution) so that other Universities in LatAm can replicate/adapt this project
Related Outcomes
editThe related outcomes of this project will be financed by resources from the Colegio de México and serve as a way to solidify institutional commitment and participation in the project
- We will produce a small documentary video in Spanish about this experience with the Digital Education Program at El Colegio de México and publish a small booklet with the Colegio's editorial team in order to promote this type of work in other universities in Mexico.

- El Colegio de México is one of the principal academic references in the country. If they lead the way in forming alliances with Wikimedia and guide their academic output towards freeing it and making it more accessible, other universities and academic institutions will follow. Having a Wikipedian in Residence will push forward these efforts and will make their benefits evident. Veckst (talk) 18:02, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
- One of the best ways to encourage the editing and creation of articles for Wikipedia is to create strategic alliances with research centers such as COLMEX. This internship would represent a first example of a profitable relationship for the dissemination of knowledge generated in research centers and institutions in Mexico. Lorenus (Lorenus) 12:38, 13 March 2017
- On behalf of Wikimedia Argentina, we support this initiative. We are working along with Wikimedia Mexico to organize our Wikilesa project - activity to improve Human Rights articles in Wikipedia- in Mexico and all the material that would be digitized thanks to this project will be useful for this purpose.--Anna Torres (WMAR) (talk) 20:13, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
- As a student at El Colegio de México, I support this initiative Lilián Reyes (talk) 20:13, 13 March 2017
- As the academic librarian for the Center of Economic Studies at El Colegio de México, I endorse this iniciative Tomás Bocanegra (talk) 15:38, 13 March 2017
- As an intern at the Daniel Cosío Villegas Library, I endorse this initiative Vanesa Rosas (talk) 15:38, 13 March 2017
- As the petiton says, sharing the knowledge universities produce can be of great help to expand and improve Wikipedia. Wikipedia in spanish has a huge work left to do, and El Colegio de México is an important ally in order to share information of great quality. Having a Wikipedian here will help people like me, who want to contribute to this enciclopedia but that needs technical and professional advice. Aninonimo (talk) 23:15, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
- As the academic librarian for the Center of Linguistic and Literature at El Colegio de México and participant of the first Editathon in this institution, I endorse this initiative Lourdes Quiroa (talk) 18:20, 13 March 2017.
- COLMEX is an institution dedicated to academic research. The knowledge gained from it could be infinitely more useful if it could be shared in a free, straightforward way. Wikipedia could do just that. The importance of El Colegio de México in regard to academic research, makes it very likely that other institutions will follow suit in making their academic knowledge accesible for everyone. .almada (talk) 02:28, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

- Endorse -- This is a great initiative and will have an important impact on the continuing good work being done in Mexico. It could also be a valuable model for additional residencies throughout Mexico and Latin America. -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 03:15, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
- Endorse What an excellent project. Swag helps participants feel more invested in Wikipedia, and refreshments are vital to getting people to events. I'd like to see the Wikipedian-in-Residence work for longer than a month, but this a great start. This would be money well-spent. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 20:35, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
