Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

My primary goal was Expand network of potential partners. I am satisfied with the outcome.

The CC Global Summit is held every year. Hundreds of leading activists, advocates, librarians, educators, lawyers, technologists, and more join for discussion and debate, workshops and planning, talks and community building. I wanted to attend to network with other participants, and present some of the work done with schools, WikiFundi and offline tools in the wiki world. Why CC ? because this organization is part of Wikimedia friends and I thought it important to foster relationships and launch collaboration between Wikimedia and cc. Why this year ? Because it is held in Lisbon which is a nearby city from where I live (2018 and 2017 were in Toronto) so a good opportunity (cheaper and easier to attend).

Turned out quite a few other wikipedians had the very same idea and it was very interesting to be at the same time attending a conference when already knowing some of the participants whilst also not knowing many others. It made networking very interesting and fruitful. Upon asking oldbies, it was the first time ever that there were so many wikipedians at a CC Summit. Next CC Summit will also take place in Lisbon.

Presentation of Offline solutions

I also had two approved sessions

• "Using offline tools to build open content and introducing CC" in the 'Building the Commons' track : 15 mn lightning talk
• "Developing an Open Knowledge Curriculum for Senior School" in the Open Ed/Sci/Access. This is a workshop session of 60 mn

Both were well received and reasonably attended. Most importantly, several people came to extend the conversation after the presentation was done. I made several good connexions and have already reconnected online with them since then and exchanged several emails. I also discovered CC certificates and particularly enjoyed several presentations using game or gamification to support teaching or outreach work. I will present one of those at an edit-a-thon this month.

Outcome

1. Number of presentation attendees: 100
   1. Outcome : probably less given that CC Summit is not a big conference. But our lightning talk session, wonderfully situated in the mid morning of the first day when everyone's fresh and enthousiastic, got a good attendance and provided me with a good flow of discussions with new contacts for the entire summit, making it a very fruitful outcome.
2. Number of new potential partners: 5-8
   1. This is roughly the number of people I created a strong contact with.
3. Number of outreach activity participants: 20
   1. Whilst I did not organise a les sans pagEs outreach event in the end (not enough French speaking...), we had a good workshop on open curriculum with great feedback from participants (23 according to the picture). We also made sure to populate a table with leaflets, stickers and other communication material + display of several posters + exhibition of wiki loves Africa winning pictures. In short... outreach : checked

Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

• What worked well?
  • Hosting was really good. I was quite isolated from most participants who were in a more expensive setting than me. But my guest hotel was really really cool, walking was healthy, weather was good, and Lisbon provides lot's of public transportation which really made travelling around very simple. I did not know that city at all and found it safe, friendly, and a good choice for an international event. I think the CC people agreed with that statement given that they have decided to have CC Summit 2020 in the same city. In short... good spot for a medium size conference.
  • I liked the size of the attendance. Significantly smaller than wikimanias, I found it pleasant and enjoyed the mix of "the usual wikipedian crowd" with "completely different people from other walks of life".
  • The organization set-up was well done (most meals together, lots of spaces available, museum visit, parties, the app for the programme, the gendered-sensitive tags).
  • Some speakers were not so great, but most were ok and some were excellent and very inspiring ! I enjoyed the fact it was more "creative" and less "tech" than Wikimedia events...
• What did not work so well?
  • My jacket was stolen and I had a shoe issue...
• What would you do differently next time?
  • Making sure that my shoes stick to my feet ?
  • Seriously... next time, I do not know. But what I know is that in the coming year, I am going to explore further what CC is exactly involved in and which ressources are made available.

Grant funds spent

International travel and hosting

• Travel budgeted 300 euros.
• Hotel budgeted 480 euros
• spent : 613,16 (opodo flight+hotel package)+ 10 city tax : 623,16 euros

Parking and transfer

• Parking : 47,08 euros
• transport to/from the airport LIS : 5 euros
• transport to/from airport MRS : 20 euros

Registration to CC event

• budgeted 280 euros (this is 295 USD).
• spent : 197 euros (I got a discount as speaker)

Food and local transport : budgeted 60 euros

• spent on local transport : about 40 euros
• food and drinks: 52,20 euros

Total budgeted : 1120 euros

Total spent : 985 euros

Remaining funds

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

I do have a bit of funds left. I suggest that this goes to pay for some of the material brought over there and/or the one to bring at Wikimania. Let me know if that's an issue. There is 135 euros unspent.

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.

• 22 EUR to cover some printing expenses for Wikimania.
• 113 EUR to cover part of the CC certificate expenses.
