Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The plan is one primary editathon/event celebrating Wikipedia Day and Public Domain Day in early-mid January 2019, with two follow-up events directed towards long-term engagement for interested attendees. The goal of the first event is simply engagement – we do not anticipate substantial on-wiki work done at the Wikipedia Day party. The two follow-up editathons are where substantial content work is more likely to occur. Training will be provided for new editors at all events to join at their comfort and skill level.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The primary method of promotion will be internal Stanford channels: email lists, posters, announcements, word of mouth. Additionally, Bay Area Wikimedians will be notified, a geonotice will be requested for the area, and wikimediaus-l will be pinged.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes! The grantee (User:L235) is an experienced English Wikipedia editor and administrator, and anticipates having several additional experienced Wikipedians from the surrounding area in attendance as well.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

High-speed internet will be available. Participants will be encouraged to bring laptops, and computers will be provided for anyone who does not have one. Extensive library resources will be available for use as article sources, including database access and physical access to libraries on campus.
Training will be available for participants who are new to Wikipedia editing; we anticipate participants will be generally competent, and tasks will be available for participants of all skill levels.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

The two follow-up events are designed to promote sustainable engagement with Stanford Wikimedians and Wikimedia as a movement more broadly.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Specifics are still being worked out but we feel confident that this will work. In particular, we have several venue options and are working out dates. Depending on circumstances, we may wish to fold the two follow-up events into one.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 3
  2. Number of participants: 25-50
  3. Number of new editors: 20
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 30
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 5-15
  6. A core group of local Wikimedians is identified and

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Kevin (User:L235) will be the primary organizer. He will be responsible for coordination, planning, and outreach. We anticipate that 3-5 experienced Wikipedians will be in attendance. No other group is providing monetary support, but we anticipate that venue will be donated in-kind on the Stanford University campus (covering the largest expense).

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

We anticipate the following broad expenses:
  • Snacks, lunch or dinner (e.g. pizza, for Wikipedia Day party only), beverages, cake: $350
    • Wikipedia Day party: $200
    • Two follow-up events: $150 ($75 each)
  • Local transportation for experienced Wikimedians to contribute ($75)
    • Caltrain, BART, other transportation reimbursement. Experienced Wikimedians from Berkeley to San Francisco have expressed interest in attending.
  • Printing, handouts, signage (for the event and for promotion), badges, markers, other materials ($75)
  • Misc expenses/contingency: $75
Total: $575.

  • I have had many Wiki community organization talks with L235 and know this person to be able to represent Wikipedia publicly in a positive and productive way. This proposal is for a typical en:WP:Wikipedia Day event after the usual manner of this tradition. It would be great to include wiki team Stanford in the celebration. • I'd even participate considering how close this event is to my location, depending on the day of the week the event is held! --Cameron11598 (talk) 21:54, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Great to see this proposal to encourage engagement with Wikipedia Day and beyond for both Stanford and the wider Bay Area community.--Pharos (talk) 04:51, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
  • L235 is great. I'll definitely be there! Legoktm (talk) 09:26, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Excited to see this planned on Stanford’s campus. It will compliment other plans happening on campus regarding wiki. Jackiekoerner (talk) 13:42, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
