Project Goal

Brighton Pride photograph uploaded as part of the LGBT Free Media Collective campaign.

1. Add to the highest quality LGBT+ photographs on Wikimedia Commons and improve content through high quality illustration of Wikipedia articles.
2. Attract new contributors on Commons and Wikipedia projects on LGBT+ related topics, including those with a passion for LGBT+ subjects and high quality photography.
3. Engage existing contributors in better use of LGBT+ related images and increase awareness of the need for, and to test methods to, achieve a representative subject diversity in highest quality Wikimedia project articles and media.

Project Plan

Activities

The prize campaign will be organized by a small panel of WM-LGBT+ volunteers, who will organize notices and handle the qualification of candidate photographs being submitted. The prize campaign is targeted at independent photographers with previously unreleased photographs to nominate. Though this may include professionals, the prize recognizes the work of photographers rather than institutions and existing archives.

1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?
The competition is to encourage and reward the release of new LGBT+ culture related photographs and have more LGBT+ related images being nominated for Featured Picture. Though the Commons:LGBT Free Media Collective campaign and the Wiki Loves Pride campaign have resulted in a significant collection of LGBT+ photographs, none has yet achieved Featured Picture (FP) status. Having photographs recognized as Featured, gives the benefit of gaining wide recognition by being able to be featured as Picture of The Day on the main page of Wikimedia Commons and recognized automatically in other places, such as the English Wikipedia Signpost newsletter.

2. How will you let people know about the contest?
Central and site notices, along with announcements on Wikimedia email groups, twitter streams, Facebook groups and explanation/discussion on the Wikimedia Commons Village Pump should any detailed questions arise.

3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Featured Pictures have existing nomination criteria and guidelines on each project and will remain independent of WM-LGBT+. A WM-LGBT+ volunteer panel will advise the candidate on whether a photograph has a sufficiently clear LGBT+ theme to be eligible in the competition, before the candidate proceeds with the FP nomination. Being recognized as a candidate in the competition will not change the local FP criteria that applies to all photographs.

The prizes are awarded on a first past the post system. As the most technically challenging criteria for FP is on Wikimedia Commons, there will be two prizes for first and second past the post ($200 and $100), then three prizes for different language Wikipedias. Photographers will be limited to one prize and each Wikipedia FP system will be eligible for one prize. At the time of this proposal, Featured Picture candidate pages exist in 43 different language Wikipedias.

The prizes are not retroactive, so to be eligible photographs must have been first uploaded to Wikimedia Commons after the competition starts, though the photographs may have been taken at past events or be of historic interest but not previously released. A maximum of two photographs from any photographer will be considered eligible, while those photographs are active in any Featured Pictures process.

4. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?
Featured Pictures by their nature tend to be widely used after they are recognized, and WM-LGBT+ volunteers will be both tracking usage and seeking out the most relevant Wikipedia articles to benefit from the new images.

Impact

Measures with target figures in brackets:

1. Engagement will be measured by:
   1. counting the number of photographers coming forward, [10 photographers]
   2. estimating participation in Featured Picture discussion [20 volunteers] and
   3. estimating the numbers of Wikipedia article editors reusing and illustrating articles with all new images that the competition will attract, not only those that achieved Featured Picture status. [20 volunteers]
2. Direct impact will be measured by the number of new LGBT+ related photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons that can be counted against the competition. [at least 40 new high quality photographs]
3. Overall impact by counting the increase in the number of high quality LGBT+ photographs used on Wikimedia projects, which ties in with the Wiki99 campaign itself having a goal to increase the quality of LGBT+ articles. [100 transclusions]
4. External impact will be gauged by tracking public engagement on twitter, blogs and the press, as well as discovering where the newly released photographs are reused. [3 significant references]

Resources

The WM-LGBT+ user group has no direct resources but can draw on the goodwill of our network of Wikimedians with an interest in increasing the quality of LGBT+ subjects on Wikimedia projects.

The financial resources needed to run the competition are:

• The prize fund of $600.
• There may be standard fees associated with currency changes and transfer costs of prizes from US dollars.

•  Support In my experience, our featured pictures are primarily landscapes and nature, animals, architecture, places, or static portraits of individual people. Featured pictures of groups of people and/or events involving a significant number of people are rare. Narrow that down to coverage of LGBT groups, people, and events, and you'd be hard pressed to find anything that's FP or FP-worthy. I think it would be great to encourage high quality photographic coverage of LGBT people, events, and lifestyle, and a contest with prizes would certainly attract some high-quality/FP-worthy entries. As you know, I have nothing against LGBT themes in "Commons", and especially in FPC. But I think this site is not made for an illustration of any community organized activism. There is only one community here: the community of "commoners".--Jebulon (talk) 19:50, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

•  Oppose WMF should not fund competitions that discriminate people/subjects on the basis of overt sexuality. The Featured Picture forums are unsuitable for judging photographic competitions.     • Commons:Photo challenge/2014 - June - Wiki Loves Pride 2014 had 50 nominations from only 7 users, and only 15 people voted. The PC has become more popular since then (Main Page advert helps) but still that was the lowest level for contributions/voting-enthusiasm, and the quality of images was not imo particularly high. There have been repeated calls from one or two individuals to repeat it, but I have resisted those as we have absolutely no shortage of topics for PC (both about people and about other things) so why recycle any previous (unsuccessful) topic for the two themes we run each month? I'm sure a more heavily advertised LGBT Photo Challenge could be more successful, and perhaps PC could be used if done as an additional challenge that month (or over two months, even). -- Colin (talk) 09:01, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
