Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are hosting one editathon, which will include a training based on Art+Feminism's training materials.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The editathon is registered on the Wikipedia Outreach Dashboard: [1] and Art+Feminism. We have also made a Facebook event: [2]

As this event is held in collaboration with the Auckland Libraries, we have published the event through the Library’s and the NZFM’s social media pages, We will publicise it several more times using this system before the editathon. In addition, the event is on the Library's event calendar as well as the NZFM’s.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, we will have Susan Tolich, New Zealand’s first Wikimedian in Residence, as the main experienced Wikipedian to help facilitate the event.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

This event is aimed at all levels of skill and the participants do not need to know anything as we will aim to teach them the basic Wikipedia editing skills. We have asked the attendees to bring their own device. In addition, there are computers in the Library that are internet and wikipedia ready. We will have excellent Wi-Fi available in the Library building, where the event will take place. Plus, we have millions of books and electronic resources that participants can use as they prepare their articles.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will thank participants on their Talk pages after the event and invite them to continue editing. We will also run a survey to learn what went well, what could be improved, and gauge interest in future edit-a-thons.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The New Zealand Fashion Museum is an online museum and hosts over 200 profiles of New Zealand fashion designers and accompanying images, many openly licensed. This wealth of information online and the Wikipedia edit-a-thon present an excellent opportunity to enrich Wikipedia with stories of New Zealand fashion designers. We have decided to run the edit-a-thon in conjunction with the Art+Feminism organisation, as our values and output align, and the Art+Feminism website provides great resources for editing and creation of articles.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events 1
  2. Number of participants 20
  3. Number of new editors 15
  4. Number of of articles created or improved 40

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have 2 experienced Wikipedians who will organize the event and provide training and one-on-one support. Library staff will be available to help coordinate resources. The venue, technology, and Wi-Fi are provided free of charge.

  1. Food and drink (at $10 per person) = $200
  2. Reimbursement of travel costs for Wikipedian, Susan Tolich = $520 return flights from Dunedin to Auckland
  3. Swag - Art+Feminism t-shirts = $100

Endorsements

  •   Support I think this is a great idea. Speggle22 and Susan_Tol have done a good job in the past, and there's enough of a Wikipedia community in Auckland that they'll have no trouble getting people along to help newcomers. I particularly like how this is pushing out into a woman-friendly non-traditional Wikipedia space, and it has potential to recruit a more diverse group of new editors. •   Support As an active member of Wikidata’s Fashion project, I am excited to support this cooperation with the New Zealand Fashion Museum. - PKM (talk) 22:46, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
  • I believe this event and others like it will have a positive impact, help New Zealanders contribute to female fashion history on Wikipedia. Tulbnz (talk) 09:16, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
