Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

edit

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:18, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you

Thank you for your participation in reviewing the Project Grant for the position Wikipedian in Residence at the University of Pittsburgh. I am not posting this thank you simply because you endorsed the project but I believe that community feedback has made this Project better. Please feel free to give additional feedback regarding this grant on the talk page if you would like.

JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)

edit

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:32, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, would you be interested in doing a short session on Friday December 11 on what we did for Wiki Loves Fashion? Might be a good way to talk about an aspect of GLAM that is often forgotten - fashion, textiles, etc. Thanks! -- Fuzheado (talk) 15:26, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Auxiliary data matcher

edit

Good afternoon! I want to know more about how Auxiliary data matcher works and are doing in Mix 'n' Match. Can you help? --Pmt (talk) 17:48, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Pmt: Per the Mix'n'match/Manual "... 'auxiliary matcher' will check the dataset for additional identifiers such as VIAF IDs and check them against existing records in Wikidata." I don't know any more about how it works than that.- PKM (talk) 21:37, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

GLAM collaboration projects / Photography in LA

edit

Hello,

I do posts, videos, and other educational resources on Mesoamerican (Aztec, Maya etc) history and archeology and have begun to also edit Wikipedia. I've also long taken photos at museum exhibits to eventually upload to Wikimedia.

I'm reaching out because I saw on your page you helped with a number of GLAM collaboration projects, and I'm wondering if you could potentially tell me more about those and how they are set up: There's a particular museum I know of which might potentially be interested in having some of their collection added to Wikimedia if they could get funding or other assistance, so I'm wondering if that sort of thing could happen. Or in other situations, Wikimedia contributing to negotiations or requests to get access to photograph pieces in shoots where a tripod etc may be allowed unlike just for normal visitors?

Secondly, I saw you were located in Los Angeles and were wondering if you knew any photographers who contribute to Wikimedia in the area who might be interested in taking photos of the Maya and Moche ceramics on display at the "Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, and Moche Pottery" exhibit running at the Getty Villa, which is open till the end of the month.

Thank you!

MajoraZ (talk) 00:51, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

You might want to join Wikimedians of Los Angeles and ask on their group talk page for a photographer to go to the Getty Villa with you. I’m not very active there anymore but there's lots of new active members.
As far as how GLAM projects work, it varies widely. Usually an experienced Wikimedian will work with a museum to determine what their needs are. Sometimes the museum will pay a “Wikimedian in Residence” to help them, but there are other ways to work. You can ask at Wikimedians of LA to see if anyone is available (I’m not).
There’s more information about GLAM projects at GLAM.
Good luck! - PKM (talk) 05:13, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
