Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes We met our goals as we mentioned in the Grant proposal. We have successfully engaged the existing and new users during the project timeline. Our team and community are happy and satisfied with the output of this project. Through the beginning, we worked hard to achieve the goals. We used our experience of past events to connect more people as well as focus to upload more images to Wikimedia Commons.

Activities

edit

To promote the Wiki Loves Birds, we collaborated with Bird Conservation Nepal (BirdLife Nepal) and Friends of Birds Group. We also got support from BCN to identify species of birds and organize Photowalk and Bird watching. More than 7 Photowalks were organized around Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre, Chitwan, and other parts of Nepal. Some professional and newbie enthusiastic photographers participated during the photo-ride event. These events show increment in the number of participants as well as numerous photo uploads.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Coordination and collaboration: The project was able to introduce Wikipedia article creation technique to the people working on birds by producing literature, pictures, and research works. It has built up nice coordination and relationship with Bird Conservation Nepal, birds experts of Nepal, and reputed writers of books on birds. Their collaboration and active participation in this project by way of photo uploading, species identification, and article creation have enriched Wikipedia.

Photographic team's work: The Wiki Loves Birds project has collaborated with a good number of professional photographers who have great equipment for macro photography. So this project has formed an enthusiastic team of photographers who are willing to contribute to Wikimedia Commons.

Creation and expansion of articles in ne.wiki: This project has created and developed more than 100 articles on birds of Nepal in Nepali Wikipedia which has upheld the very motto of Wikimedia movement of knowledge development and sharing.

  • What did not work so well?

Weather condition: This year unexpected weather condition affected our plan on Photowalks.

Media Coverage: we planned to publish some news on media but unfortunately we could not make it.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We expect to work with the more bird expertise to make this project better and will try to engage more photographers and editors to in uploading photographs and creating and improving articles in the project Wiki Loves Birds. We are also thinking to collaborate with international community to add photographs in Wikimedia Commons and improve the quality and quantity of Wikipedia article about Birds from all around the world.

  • Because of this project we are able to upload some totally new images to wikipedia project (ie. images of Spiny Babbler and Indian Grassbird).
  • I have created list of birds found in Nepal, in future I have plane to improve Wikipedia articles about them and Upload photos.
