Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
We are very happy for the outcome of Wikipedia 4 Refugees. The initiative involved 8 refugees participants, 9 experienced editors from the local Wikipedia community (Trentino Alto-Adige Wiki), 9 tutors and 2 linguistic mediators, and it was supported by the University of Trento and by Cinformi, the local immigration office.
Preceded by a train-the-trainers session in which two experienced Wikipedia editors showed the basics of Wikipedia editing to the tutors, the initiative consisted of a total of 10 2-hours sessions in which refugees participants where first introduced to Wikipedia through in-class activities and discussion, and then worked on the translation of selected articles from Italian to their native languages.
The initiative achieved its goals has it has:
- added content to Bambarà, Fula, Pashto and Urdu Wikipedia editions;
- recruited new editors in these languages;
- created an occasion for interraction and mutual exchange between the group of refugees and the local Wikipedia community;
- improved digital and media literacy skills of the refugees participants.
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Number of lessons: 10 | 10 | 10 classroom sessions under the name of "Wikipedia 4 Refugees" were successfully held from October 16 to December 28, 2017. |
Number of participants: 32 | 28 | 28 people took part in Wikipedia 4 Refugees. This includes 8 refugee participants, 9 expert Wikipedia editors, 9 tutors and 2 linguistic mediators. Compared to the original target of 4 linguistic mediators, we lost 1 (Bambarà) for miscommunication with the project partner that was responsible for it, and 1 (Pular) due to the mediator's inavailability. Overall, we had slightly fewer Wikipedia editors than we had planned (9 instead of 12); however, this did not affect the target of having at least 4 Wikipedia editors + 4 tutors present at every lesson. |
Number of articles created or improved: 8 | 10 | See below |
Number of languages: 4/5 | 4 | Articles were translated into 4 languages: Pular, Bambarà, Urdu and Pashto. |

Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- The cooperation with the local Wikipedia community worked well in attracting experienced editors to come help our refugee students out with enthusiasm and patience. The interaction between the two communities made people learn new things, experience new situations, and ultimately feel enriched & inspired.
- What did not work so well?
We had some difficulties in communicating with Cinformi, the local immigration office and partner of the initiative, which, in one occasion, lead to lose 2 hours of Bambarà linguistic mediation.
- What would you do differently next time?
We would dedicate more time to make participants understand & explore the general mission of Wikipedia, and less time to teach them the technical details of the editing work.

Anything else
editAnything else you want to share about your project?
- The project had a good media resonance, especially at local level (See under "Press") as well as on the social networks (cfr. the hashtags #Wikipedia4Refugees and #Wiki4Refugees in Twitter and Facebook);
- We presented the project also at MozFest, the Mozilla's Festival in London (October 30th, 2017), see the video on YouTube (from 0:18)
- We are in contact with some organisations that are interested in replicating the experience in other places in Italy and we are planning some follow-up.
- On Italian Wikipedia is available the day-by-day diary with all the information for each lesson, including programme (in Italian) and participants;
- Thank you!
