The Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon aims at fostering new alliances between media freedom activists, journalists, media experts, and the Wikipedia and open-knowledge communities in order to boost the availability of accurate knowledge on media freedom-related issues in the largest open encyclopedia worldwide.

The Sofia's edit-a-thon is the second Wiki4MediaFreedom edition: the first one was held last year in Belgrade[1].

This year's edition will include a Wikidata track on how to use Wikidata to find data for investigative journalism and for transparency and accountability projects.

Participants, trained and assisted by a group of experienced Wikipedians and Wikidata experts, will work together to improve, update, and translate Wikipedia articles concerning media freedom and pluralism, access to information and transparency in Bulgaria, South-Eastern Europe, and the wider Europe and learn how to query and add information to Wikidata.

The Wikidata track has been developed by the British NGO, MySociety, moving from their previous experience with Wikidata within the project "EveryPolitician"[2][3], aiming at gathering and sharing data on every politician.

The event is organised by Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa (Italy) in cooperation with the Association of European Journalists Bulgaria (Bulgaria),mySociety (United Kingdom) and members of the local Wikimedians of Bulgaria User Group (Bulgaria) who will join, their commitments permitting.

The Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon aims at improving the quality, number and languages of articles on media freedom and pluralism-related contents in order to increase public knowledge of media freedom issues and to raise awareness of the need of more transparency and accessible information in this field.

To this aim, the Sofia's edit-a-thon will gather media freedom activists, journalists, media experts and a group of experienced Wikipedia volunteers and Wikidata experts.

After an introduction and a tutorial on Wikipedia editing processes and on Wikidata, 4-5 hours of collaborative editing will follow, with experienced Wikipedia & Wikidata editors working side by side with participants to edit entries, verify sources and references, fill missing information, translating contents and adding data to Wikidata.

Refreshments for participants is offered by the organisers.

Participants will be provided with:

  • A list of articles in need to be improved;
  • A list of sources that can be used as references;
  • A list comprising a selection of quality articles proposed for translation into other languages, depending on the participants’ language skills.

Participants may edit in English, Bulgarian or any other language they wish to use.

The Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon will take place at the Red House (15 Ljuben Karavelov Str. Sofia 1142 Sofia) on November 27th, from 9am to 5pm.

The edit-a-thon is a follow up to a GLAM project implemented in 2015 by OBC Transeuropa in cooperation with Wikimedia Italia as a part of the project European Centre for Press and Media Freedom and aiming at enriching and systematizing the articles on media freedom and pluralism in Europe in several linguistic versions and training / assisting OBC Transeuropa’s staff to allow them to contribute autonomously in Wikipedia beyond the end of the GLAM project.

The Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon is at is Second Edition, after the successful experience of the Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon held in Belgrade in November 2016.

13.30 - 13.50: What is Wikidata and what is the point of using/uploading political data to it?

  • Examples of transparency and accountability projects that use political data - e.g. TheyVoteForYou[4], Majilis Nameh[5], ShineYourEye[6].
  • What is Wikidata now and what is the Wikimedia plan for it in the future?

The evolution of the EveryPolitician project and why we think Wikidata is the best place to build a corpus of open political data.

  • The mySociety vision of a ‘democratic commons’
  • Examples of how journalists have used EveryPolitician[7] data to cross-match lists of politicians to other sources (e.g. Private Eye using data to investigate shell companies and journalists working on the Panama Papers[8]).

13.50 - 14.15:

  • What political information/data is already in Wikidata for Bulgaria?
  • What types of questions can we answer with this data by querying it?
  • What types of questions do we want to know the answer to, and what data needs to be added to Wikidata to answer these?
