Programs
editCommunity support
All of Wikimedia projects are being created and maintained by communities. As an affiliate of Wikimedia movement, it is the most important for us to support the communities. We annually hold a conference to help Korean Wikimedians to improve their Wikimedia-related knowledge and share their experiences. We also award dedicated users to encourage the Korean Wikimedia communities. We thinks it is critical to maintain community heath or diversity. To achieve that, we will host serial editathons for women and new users.
WikiConference
We annually hold a national conference for both skilled users and new comers in Seoul. We will mainly talk about how Wikipedia editing can give students special and various experiences in our annual conference, because many students don't have opportunities to have various experiences because they usually have to stay in their classroom in South Korea. We will invite a high school teacher as a speaker and request them to share their experience. We are also planing to invite an education expert or researcher from Wikimedia Foundation or other organizations to explain Wikipedia's advantage as an educational tool to teacher and parents.
Objectives:
- delivering new knowledge related to Wikimedia project
- introducing usefulness and publicness of the project.
- sharing and discussing users' experience related to the project.
To evaluate the goals, we will conduct a survey for the participants. Before the conference, we will talk with users on Korea Wikimedia projects to know what the community needs.
The program will include:
- what students can experience on Wikipedia when they submit their assignments.
- introduction to Wikidata-driven infoboxes
- presentations delivered by Wikimedia users
Measure of Success:
- over 80 participants
- 20 active users
- over 5 presentations
- 3-4 videos
- one new project for the new infoboxes
Wikimanina Scholarship
Since 2017, we have granted a travel scholarship to a Korean Wikimedian. We will also offer the scholarship to share global issues related to Wikimedia projects and inspire them to launch new projects.
Objectives:
- We will choose one grantee from Korean Wikimedia Community and request he/she to submit a report to share global issues regarding Wikimedia.
- We expect the report to inspire users to launch at least 1 new projects. To know it, we will require the grantee to report if he/she launch a new project and keep track of new Wikiprojects.
Awards for Dedicated Users
Since 2016, we have given a prize money to dedicated users, which is called "Wikimedians of the Year." In 2018, we expanded categories from two to four, and we will maintain it next year. A ceremony event for the winners became one of the most important events in Korean Wikimedia community, and it will be held in the form of an unconference.
Objectives:
- We will award cash prizes to 4 users from 4 categories. We expect the prize to encourage active users. To measure long-term impact of this program, we will interview the recipients and keep track of their activities for one year.
- we will held a winning ceremony with an unconference. We evaluate this ceremony became a place to talk about Wikimedia-related issues.
Editathons for New and Women Users
Since we established, we have held an editathons for new and women users. We know that serial editathons are more efficient than a single editathon, but it was very hard to motivate new users to attend follow-up events. We think we need find other community or organizations or create a new community to achieve it. We think Wikimedia Taiwan's A Room of WikiWomen's Own project is a good case, and we will model our own project after it.
Objectives:
- To draw women users and maintain their own community, we will hold at least one offline meetup for women users a month. We expect 5 women users to participate in per event, and we will edit or create 1-2 articles related to women. We also have a plan to join in Art&Feminism project as a part of this program.
- To draw new users, we will host over 2 serial editathons. We anticipate total 10 people attending. We think it is the most effective to help them to edit articles they are interested in, and encourage them to upload their own pictures.
Partnership
To draw new users and collect new contents, we need to build partnerships with outer organization including libraries, museums and schools. We are cooperating an association for libraries and educating librarians. We think this cooperation is successful and we will maintain it next year. We are also planning to teach staff members in museums to improve Wikipedia articles and collect images. To draw potential users, we help teachers and their students to use Wikimedia projects as an educational tool.
Libraries and Museumes
We are cooperating with Korea Library Association (KLA) to educate librarians and develop new program. We evaluate that the cooperation has been successful until now. We will educate Wikipedia to 12 groups of librarians in 2018. We will strengthen the cooperation with them, and promote 1Ref1Lib project to librarians.
Objectives:
- To draw new librarian users, we will hold 10 editathons or seminars. We expect 5-10 librarians to attend per event.
- To draw libraian users, we will promote 1lib1ref project and Wikitown project and host at least 2 events at libraries.
This year we are educating staff members of War and Women Rights Museum. Our goal is to grow them into Wikipedians-in-residence and help them to donate their images or other resources to the Wikimedia projects voluntarily. We will also seek for other museums which are willing to donate their resources.
Objectives:
- To collect image and video files, we will upload over 100 images from GLAM.
- To improve quality of articles, we will grow Wikipedians-in-residence and improve over 10 articles with them. We will use our own metrics to measure the quality, because article evaluation system is not active in Korean Wikipedia. You can see our metrics here.
Non-governemt Organizations
We had a meeting with a Korea-Africa cooperation organization and talked about cooperation to share information about Africa in Korea. The organization will introduce to us people who are willing to edit Wikipedia articles about Africa
Objectives:
- To draw new users and share information on Africa in Korean Wikipedia, we will hold 1-2 Africa-related editathons. We expect total 10-15 people to participate in.
Schools
As I mentioned above, many Korean students don't have various experiences, although universities request the students to do that. We realized some high school teachers are willing to use Wikipedia to give to their students special and educational experience. This year, we are helping two high school teacher and their students to submit their assignments to English and Korean Wikipedia. We will support the teachers and their students, and we will also suggest to them experimental programs such as a photo walk.
Objectives:
- To draw potential users, we will help 100-150 students to submit their to English/Korean Wikipedia. We expect over 50 girl students to be involved.
Support for sister projects
Unfortunately, Korean Wikipedia sister projects are not active and they don't have as much volunteers as the Wikipedia. To support the sister project as well as the wikipedia, we need to develop various programs including camps, workshops and photo competitions.
Wikisource, Wikidata and Wikivoyage
There are many old Korean books under public domain. Unfortunately, Wikisourse collects just a few of typed old Korean books, because almost of them contain old characters which are not used. We collected scanned old books from National Library of Korea, but they have not been typed in Wikisource. We will find volunteers or employ editors to digitalize and type the books with our own funds.
We will hold 1 or 2 workshops to promote Wikidata, and we will collect and correct Wikidata's data in the event. We also plan to host a camp to improve Wikivoyage and Wikimedia Commons. We will support skilled editors' travel to regions about which Wikivoyage articles don't explain or introduce thoroughly.
Objectives:
- Wikisource
- To improve the contents of Wikisource, we will digitalize and type over 5 books in old Korean
- Wikidata
- To promote Wikidata, we will hold 1-2 relevant workshops. We expect 5-10 participants.
- In the workshops, we will edit over 30 items, and we will modify Wikipedia templates to improve the contents of Wikidata.
- Wikivoyage & Commons
- To promote Wikivoyag and Wikimedia Commons projects, we will host 2 camps, where we will improve 3-4 Wikvoyage articles, and uploade over 200 images on the Commons. We expect total 10 skilled users to participate in.
Photo Contest
We have organized Wiki Loves Monuments biyearly since 2016. In 2017, we collected total 999 photos, and 252 of them are being used in Wikipedia and other projects.[1] To collect more high-quality photos of Korean cultural heritage, we will host the photo competition next year again.
Objectives:
- To improve Wikipedia articles and promote the Wikimedia Commons, we collect over 1000 images of Korean cultural heritage from the photo contest. We expect 20-25% of total photos to be used in the wikis.
- To promote the event, we will hold an exhibition.

Programs Impact
editCommunity support
Although participants in this year's conference were less than last year, we evaluate it was successful in terms of an impact on Korean Wikipedia. The participants agreed that Korean Wikipedia needed to more familiar with new comers and change its old convention. Some users suggested to improve Korean Wikipedia's old-fashiond main page. As a result of the event, the main page was changed last December.
We planned to host consecutive editathons for women users, but the first event was less successful than we expected. We needed to modify our strategy, and we supported some events voluntarily hosted by women users. We should develop attractive editathon topics to draw women users.
We supported a series of editathons for new users, which were combined with book discussion. New user were motivated to read a book and edit relevant articles by the event, because book discussion is getting popular among Koreans. In addition, we supported eight on/offline editathons hosted by users for new users, and our financial support activated user offline activities.

Partnership
We had difficulty in building new partnership with GLAM and non-profit organization. We contacted two museums, but we failed to establish partnership with them. We also attempted ot find a non-profit organization which was willing to join in free knowledge movement, but it was not successful. Korean society is not familiar with the notion of free knowledge yet. We will focus on promoting the movement to researchers and governors next year.
We achieved most of the goals in terms of partnership with libraries. Although many public librarians attended the seminars we provided, they didn't seem to be willing to plan and host Wikimedia-related projects. We will concentrate on building partnership with university librarians who can plan projects autonomously.
Partnership with Yangjung Girl's High School was extended. More girl students edited Wikipedia articles than last year, and three student from the school shared their experience in the conference. We evaluate that the relationship provided the students with useful experience. We will maintain the partnership with Yangjung and find other school next year.

We hosted two camps for skilled users, and they exceeded most of the goal we set up. However, we failed to inspire them to edit Wikiyage articles, because they were not used to it. We realized we need a specific motivation to achieve that.
Photo Contest is less successful than we expected. We think it was because the total amount of the cash prize was decreased and users lost an interest in the contest. We will plan a new contest to attract user's interest.
