In 2020, Wikimedia Taiwan established a mid-long-term partnership with National Cheng Kung University, earning the valuable first-hand experience in the history classroom.

NCKU Department of History in 2020 started a project call “Wiki into History”, open 4 course and a workshop, implanting Wikipedia as part of its curriculum. The cooperation was introduced by one of our current personnel; After two meeting, we agreed on how this project is going to be. By the workshop, we can train the seeding teacher, and they will be the assistant teacher in the upcoming courses, teaching how to use and edit Wikipedia.

Detail as followed:

• Teaching: It parted mainly into two: “Micro-Course Workshop” and “Wiki into Course”
  • Micro-Course Workshop is a two-day workshop held by Taiwan Chapter, teaching the basic knowledge such as Wikimedia, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Common, and copyright, etc. Equipping them with the basic skill required to access the Wikimedia as a teaching tool. Also, this workshop is recognized by NCKU as a credit.
  • Wiki into course is conducted by four professors in the Department of History. They implant Wikipedia into their curriculum, with the help of assistant teacher and Taiwan Chapter if needed. At the end of the semester, Taiwan Chapter also participate the classroom, helping out the student on site.
• After event: We held an exhibition showcasing the result in the NCKU campus.
• Assignment of responsibility: Taiwan Chapter provide the needed educational resource and the project planning and part of the workshop expenses; NCKU Department of History provide executive support and most of the exhibition expenses.

This is a fairly successful project, NCKU Department of History are also very inviting for further cooperation in the 2021.

What we learned in this cooperation:

• There are still many possibilities for Wikimedia Movement to take part in. Take History for example, our movement’s central idea is very similar to the idea of “Public History”. We originally thought that this cooperation is just another cooperation with an educational institute, processing context and upload to the Wikipedia. But after further discussion with the department, we relied that historiography is now promoting the literature publicization. And Wikipedia, an open and popular platform, server as the perfect choice for the movement.
• The possibility of application of Wikidata in different field is quite interesting topic to discuss. At the workshop, the introduction of Wikidata grab the attention of the professors. They recognize Wikidata as a more potential tool to inspire more dynamic way to conduct historiography research. We will try to dish out Wikidata-centered project with NCKU in the next year’s cooperation.
