Hi! There are 3 logic models we wanted to include in our proposal, but unfortunately we didn't get to finish them before 1. April. Because of sick leave our office had 0,7 FTE the three weeks before our proposal was due. We have 3 text placeholders in our proposal for logic models about Northern Sami Wikipedia, Drone-project and Wiki Loves Earth. By 21. April we will link to the logic models on this discussion page. Hopefully they can be read as part of over proposal. Cheers! --Astrid Carlsen (WMNO) (talk) 10:57, 11 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Astrid Carlsen (WMNO)! Delphine (WMF) (talk) 12:43, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Questions from the community consultation

Northern Sami

Do you know about WikiTalk? --Nemo 10:46, 18 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm not able to access http://wikipapers.referata.com/wiki/WikiTalk at the moment, I'll look into this later. Hogne (talk) 08:25, 19 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Nemo bis: I had heard about WikiTalk before, but I'm not really sure what it's about. Like Hogne says, the website you linked is down, but I was able to find a paper on it by Nikerabbit et al, so I'm reading up on it now. Seems they are working on language technology wrt. Northern Sami and other minority languages, which is very interesting. It's not the same as what we want to do, but it's good to know about, so we can reach out and see if there are things we can collaborate on. Thanks! Google survey

edit

Just for reference, phabricator:T94807 has a list of survey services other than Google Docs/Google Forms, some of which respect EU laws. --Nemo 10:53, 18 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Also the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will have some impact on our movement. Do you have a link to where this is handled? Hogne (talk) 08:25, 19 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Content outputs in table A

edit

What is going to produce the 10k "pages" (or rather items) mentioned in Grants:APG/Proposals/2016-2017 round 2/Wikimedia Norge/Proposal form#Table A Community activities? Are those images from the drones? Images from the accredited photographers? Content from the wikigrants? --Nemo 11:01, 18 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Nemo! Astrid, I have made a guesstimate here. Could you take a look into this??:

Thank you for your comments, Nemo! Much appreciated. And for your guesstimate, Hogne! As you suggest, Nemo, the items are mainly a result of accredited photographers and the drone-project, but also the weekly editing contests. When we worked on our proposal this is how we calculated the 10k pages/items to be produced:

  • accredited photographers and the drone-project (4000)
  • weekly editing contests (2000)
  • work done by editors who have received wikigrants and the work interns does in January and May, like #faktajakt (4000).

Hopes this helps, please reach out to us if you have any further comments or questions! Cheers! --Astrid Carlsen (WMNO) (talk) 09:59, 19 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Questions from FDC members

Laurentius

edit

Thanks for your proposal. I have a couple of questions for you:

  1. The "Community hours" metric includes only work on specific programmatic activities or everything done by members (except writing content on the projects), including e.g. also the time commitment of the board?
  2. regarding your attempt to revitalize the Northen Sami Wikipedia, have you talked with other organizations who made similar attempts? For instance, most of the programs of CIS has been focused on incubating new projects or working to make small communities grow. - Laurentius (talk) 11:07, 25 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your questions, Laurentius!

  1. Yes, the "Community hours" metric includes only work on specific programmatic activities done by members, but also non members and time commitment of some of the board members on activities they do in addition to their commitment as board members, such as setting up contests or do concert photography. Hope this clarifies how we have calculated this metric.
  2. We have talked WMUK about their work on making small communities grow and they have been kind to share with us how they have written applications for national funding for their work with Celtic languages. WMNO have answered a call for paper (on the revitalization of the Northern Sami Wikipedia) for the WMUK event Celtic Knot conference in July 2017. The conference will focus on Celtic Languages and Indigenous Languages. We have also talked to WMFI and briefly the national Finnish broadcaster YLE on Northern Sami and Wikidata. But we have not looked into CIS's work so far, thank you so much for pointing this out to us, we will reach out to them! There are also several Norwegian organizations, both in Glam and education, that work on promoting the use of Sami language and on sharing knowledge about Sami cultural heritage. We think we also can learn a lot from their work.

Please reach out to us if you have any further questions or comments. Cheers! --Astrid Carlsen (WMNO) (talk) 15:03, 25 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Questions from the WMF

edit

Hello Astrid, Hogne and Jon-Harald.

Northern Sami

edit
  • You mention that this is a project that comes out of community demand, but in the results to the survey, there are 0% of the people who work on Sami and apparently just one mention of Northern Sami revitalization in the general remarks. Can you tell us where the "community demand" actually comes from? Delphine (WMF) (talk) 12:57, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Reserves

edit
  • Table 6 does not seem to be completely coherent. First, the cell "Year Start of Upcoming year, should probably have the same number than the cell "year end" of the current year, unless reserves are incresed between the two funding years. Year end for the upcoming year lists a greater amount than the current year so where does that increase come from? Please adjust this table here if necessary and let's add it afterwards to the proposal, or add an explanation for the numbers you have. Thank you! Delphine (WMF) (talk) 12:57, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Delphine (WMF). Thank you for your comments! We'll provide details on the community demand for work on Northern Sami Wikipedia and adjust table 6 on Tuesday, 2 May, when we're back in the office. Tomorrow is a bank holiday in Norway. Cheers! --Astrid Carlsen (WMNO) (talk) 21:42, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Northern Sami
Both our bylaws and strategy 2016-2020 points out that WMNO should support The Northern Sami Wikipedia. Which means we are supporting Wikipedias in three languages: Norwegian Bokmål (460,000 articles), Norwegian Nynorsk (130,000 articles) and Northern Sami (7,000 articles). The two Norwegian varieties are Germanic languages, while Northern Sami is an indigenous language in the Uralic language family. Northern Sami is spoken in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, and is by far the biggest of several living Sami languages. In Norway about 25,000 people speak Northern Sami, but far fewer are able to write in the language.

  • Village pump: The latest discussion on the village pump on this subject is this post.
  • Comments and questions on in email, wiki meetups and meetings: Staff has been asked about what we do support The Northern Sami Wikipedia by many community members both in emails and in meetings over the last year. This is a good question and at the time we have no good answer. In 2017 we celebrate the marking of the 100 years that have passed since the first congress for the Sami people, Tråante 2017, in Norway. This celebration has given the issue much attention and makes for a good timing for our work, also when it comes to engage communities and work on getting national funding.
  • Celtic Knot Conference 2017: Our call for paper was accepted for the conference and we are invited to do a workshop with the title: How to kickstart a dead Wikipedia? Some of the questions we will focus on are: Where do we start with no active community? What kinds of institutional partners should we seek? How can we best support a language with limited resources? What have been the biggest challenges for similar projects supported by Wikimedia UK and other related entities? The conference will be a great starting point for our work and an unique opportunity to learn from the representatives from different Celtic & Indigenous language Wikipedias.

Reserves

Here is Table 6 with the adjusted numbers. I'm very sorry about the confusion here, thanks for pointing this out.

Table 6

Year Year start Year start (US) Year-to-date Year-to-date (US) Year end Year end (US)
Current year (e.g. 2017) 136,761 16,275 136,761 16,275 136,761 16,275
Upcoming year (e.g. 2018) - - - - 136,761 16,275

Thanks Astrid Carlsen (WMNO). Can you please use strike through <s>strike through</s> to update the table on the proposal page? Cheers! Delphine (WMF) (talk) 07:22, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Done, Delphine (WMF)! Cheers! --Astrid Carlsen (WMNO) (talk) 11:34, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
To add to the part about Northern Sami: There have been various calls for proposals about how to improve the Northern Sami Wikipedia in the Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia's village pumps over the years. Many of these proposals have been about how to getting paid editors for the Northern Sami Wikipedia, but also about other ideas. However, since—like Astrid says—Northern Sami and Norwegian are in completely different language families, with no mutual intelligibility, most contributors to the Norwegian Wikipedias aren't that conserned with it day-to-day. Most of the times it has come up has been in discussions about what Wikimedia Norge's plans should be, or when there are discussions on government funding for encyclopedias. If you want I can find you links to some of these discussions, but they do go a few years back.
However, I very often talk about ideas for Sami projects in real-life meetups, and everyone I've talked to is enthusiastic and supportive of the idea to improve the Northern Sami Wikipedia, but again, since the languages are so different there isn't that much Norwegian-only speakers can do to help other than state their support. Rewritten proposal

edit

Wikimedia Norge has rewritten this proposal. The rewritten proposal can be read here. It's mainly the program section we have rewritten. Our progress report from January 2018 and upcoming impact report in September 2018 will refer to the rewritten proposal. --Astrid Carlsen (WMNO) (talk) 13:26, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Astrid Carlsen (WMNO): what was the goal of the rewriting? is it just a change in format or have you also changed the activities? - Laurentius (talk) 10:35, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Laurentius: The goal of the rewriting was to present our activities in a better and more understandable format. Our activities are pretty much the same in the rewritten proposal. --Astrid Carlsen (WMNO) (talk) 13:47, 1 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
