Cost

edit

Currently there is a picture of some posters and an estimated cost of $300. This seems very low - I would have expected closer to $2000 for copies of those posters. Can someone confirm the cost? Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:20, 6 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Bluerasberry:, We were able to update this with real numbers, thanks to Andrew Lih. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 16:44, 22 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Poster content

edit

Copying current posters is nice but depending on cost and what others need, we might be approaching a point in which there was funding for the design of some posters. To a certain extent, posters are a conference institution that demonstrates the professionalism of a group. Having appropriate posters gives a great first impression and it might be worth the cost to get some professionally designed. If there were funds to professional design something, then I think Wikimedia community members would participate in suggesting appropriate content. Designing the posters might be lower cost than printing the posters.

It might be worthwhile to have some smaller poster for smaller events, then a set of expensive banners for bigger events. I would not want to start setting a precedent where we directed people to choose an expensive banner option when a less expensive poster option is what is desired. We were hoping to get ones like the D.C. group uses for use at GLAM events (See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikipediaSpace_SAAM_20160219_175001.jpg ), which give basic information about Wikipedia, which is not specific to a particular event. We weren't proposing to create a new design for GLAM. (Apologies, I realize I've used the terms "banners" and "posters" interchangeably.) Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 19:43, 22 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mary Mark Ockerbloom. Thank you for this grant request and all the work you're doing to support offline activities in your community. Banners can be a great tool for outreach if they are created in a way that's re-usable at many events (like the DC examples you linked to). We are happy to support this request. However, we do not print the banners directly. You would need to arrange for printing yourself. Can WMDC share the design files they used? Please let me know. If you are able to arrange this, we can move forward with approval. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:36, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi @AWang:, that's great! If WMDC can send me the design info, including the type of banner to ask for, I can contact the supplier used previously, CSI printers, (see @Fuzheado:'s information on the grant page) to put in the order. More info is always useful; if it's possible to send me the previous order number, to refer them to, that may help to ensure that we get the same thing. Thanks so much! Hi Mary Mark Ockerbloom. Great. So I will leave it to you to coordinate with WMUS-DC regarding the files and printing. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:41, 25 July 2016 (UTC).Reply
Hi @Kirill Lokshin:, You're listed as a contact for WMUS-DC, so I'm tagging you as well as Fuzheado as a possible contact to put me in touch with whoever would have info on the designs for the DC banners? Thanks, Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 00:37, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Mary Mark Ockerbloom: You'll need to get the design files from Fuzheado, as he was the one who arranged the printing of the current banners. Kirill Lokshin (talk) 00:57, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request for additional funds

  • I have received the receipt for ordering the GLAM Banners for Philadelphia from Andrew Lih. However, the final cost ($1725.00) is higher than the amount that he gave us as an estimate ($1450.00), and that we asked for and received from Rapid Grants. The difference is $275.00. We would like to appeal for additional funds to cover the full cost of the banners. These would be sent to CHF as the fiscal sponsor, which would then reimburse Andrew for the full amount.
  • @Fuzheado:, could you please provide "a short explanation of why the cost was higher than expected" here, as suggested in the Rapid Grant's email, so we can move forward in this process? Thanks, Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 19:34, 11 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • Hi, the extra expenditure was needed because the supplier for the original X frame had changed to use more reliable material and printing quality. There had been issues in the past of the feet and grommets not holding up under use, so this was the new system used. This helps with the reliability of the banners with multiple setups and teardowns. Thanks! -- Fuzheado (talk) 17:31, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
