Personal opinion for which I am against approval for this grant.

As a wikipedia editor, a member of the wikimedia Venezuela chapter, and previously a member of the board of directors, I strongly oppose to the approval of such a grant. The people who are making the request aren't neither known wikimedistas, nor part of the wikimedia Venezuela chapter. And to this day it has been known of some previous activity on their part in favor of free knowledge in wikipedia or Venezuela. Added to that, the amount they are requesting is a total abuse for what may be the possible implementation of the activities to be carried out.

I believe that the foundation should before approving such request, first consult the chapter legally constituted in Venezuela and that for many years has been working hard to build a better world. As an alternative to this proposal they could give you the necessary lines to get involved in the activities that have been carried out since the chapter.

The petition lacks sense, logic and sufficient sustenance for such approval, in any case.

Personal opinion

Hi,

I have nine years in the wmf projects and never heard about these people. Wikimedia Venezuela (chapter legally constituted in Venezuelan territory) has carried events with amounts lower than requested and has given better results. For example, WikiViajes collected 14 000 photos and Wiki Loves Monuments collected 15 000 photos. In the previous contest, more than 799 photos of sites cataloged as "Built Heritage" according to the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Venezuela were uploaded.

The person behind this request lacks significant editions to carry trainings. The number of people to train is, at least, unrealistic.

@Galahad: While your comments on the feasibility of the project and familiarity with the applicants are fine, describing the proposal as "laughable" is inappropriate. It's not acceptable to ridicule applicants or their proposals. If a goal or target set in a proposal seems unrealistic or too high, you should say so and recommend that it be lowered. Questions from Superzerocool

Hi @Milagrosblue:, thanks for sharing us your project. After a review in Spanish (¡hola!), I have some questions to answer (please, answer in English ;))

1. How do you will share the permissions of photos in Wikimedia Commons if other members of IAM Venezuela has taken the photo?
2. Who will do the workshop to 30 persons?. I'm asking because you, as possible grantee, doesn't have enough experience in Wikimedia projects (< 100 editions in ever Wikipedia) and other participants haven't a Wikimedia account.
3. About the project goal Incrementar las contribuciones a proyectos Wikimedia(...), is there any metric to be measured?
4. About budget/staff
   1. How many people you need in the project?, What are they roles? US$ 12,000 20,000 is a lot of money. (> 70% of the budget)
   2. What means Administración financiera?
   3. What happens with the equipment after the grant ends?
5. What happens if you can't contact any university, architecture school and other to do the project?

Hi Milagrosblue, this is Chris Schilling, the program officer for Project Grants. I would like to echo Superzerocool's question regarding your plans for the equipment. Please keep in mind the following eligibility criteria related to equipment requests that we can fund:

Equipment to be shared amongst Wikimedia community members (cameras, laptops, book scanner, wifi hotspot/dongle, etc.) with a plan for use and content integration

Small scale equipment purchases for Wikimedia affiliates to be shared among multiple volunteers. If no affiliate is available to host the equipment, a single active volunteer in good standing may serve as the coordination point for shared equipment.

...and what we cannot fund:

Personal equipment, including books, and equipment for non-Wikimedia affiliates

Hi Milagrosblue, this is Chris Schilling, the program officer for Project Grants. This proposal is not eligible for funding as it does not meet our eligibility criteria:

1. The request for equipment (laptops, external hard drives) cannot be granted because your organization is a non-Wikimedia affiliate. Equipment purchases are reserved for affiliates -- or in rare cases, individuals -- with a plan for how that equipment will be shared with volunteers in the movement beyond the scope of the grant itself.
2. In the budget item for Editores: $ 8,000 (translation: editors or publishers), it is unclear how this relates to the project. In our eligibility criteria, we note that Projects that replace volunteer action by directly funding someone to create content (e.g. editing articles, uploading photos) are not eligible for funding, so if your intention was to pay or compensate editors to create content, this request cannot be accommodated in this grant program.
