No Help Pages
editI installed the software and on any page there is a "Help" link but when I click on it - there's no help. Just an empty page asking me to create my own help. What do you have to do to get help pages installed? --Mperkel 16:17, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
- I agree it would be better if it were automatically part of the installation. Perhaps you can use Help:Export and import.--Patrick 21:15, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
How do I create a jpeg file, with an audio clip. Do I need a program to do this? Egon67
Where are instructions for transfering help pages?
edit(Another user with the same problem): And what I find at the Help:Export and Import page is "You might want Help:Export and/or Help:Import. Please don't link to this page." Help:Import speaks to a different issue altogether; it is a technical page dealing with import security issues. Surely there is a way to get these necessary help pages other than manually copying the handbook page by page? Please, will someone put a clear answer here in this space for the future use of everyone? Seems like every single downloader would need this information, but I cannot find any reference to it in the documentation. Thank you.
- For copying multiple pages, export/import is more convenient than copying the pages one by one. Export creates a single XML file containing all pages, import recreates the pages in the other project using the XML file.--Patrick 08:52, 2 September 2005 (UTC)
No standalone documentation?
editIs there MediaWiki documentation as a separate file/collection of files (PDF etc)? Looks like I have to use Internet each time I need a piece of advice. It is not very convenient - not everyone has unlimited and free access to Internet.
- No, but you can download the database from dumps.wikimedia.org. See also PDF Export and HTML2FPDF. Angela 12:22, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
Angela's answers still doesn't explain WHAT to get. Which one of the Special dumps is the right one ? I'm assuming it's meta.special, and that you'd want the "cur" table dump. Once you've downloaded that, what do you ACTUALLY get ? Is it a dump of the entire Meta site ? Maybe we need a bit more "padding" to this documentation, especially for newbies Armistej 00:23 01 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Answer to No Help Files on New Installation
editAccording to a reply I received on the Mediawiki mailing list, the answer to the question above is that there are no Help files set up ready to be imported. They must be copied manually to be modified individually by hand; he uses Special:export from the meta.wikimedia side. Not only the sitename must be changed, but Wikipedia-specific references removed and broken links caught. A list of Help files is at http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=12
- I recommend that interwiki linking is set up in the wiki, including m: to Meta-Wikipedia and w: to Wikipedia. Typically links from help pages are of interest for MediaWiki users in general. See also Help:MediaWiki_help_policy#Portability.--Patrick 09:05, 2 September 2005 (UTC)
This really sucks. Why the help files are not part of installation package? This is totally crazy, I want to use this wiki but how can I know where to find all these million missing help files. This is making thinkgs really hard.
Help file clean-up already done by someone?
editHas anyone already done all this work who might share the resulting cleaned-up files?
____________
maybe we shouldn't redirect this yet? this whole site is for more than just mediawiki...
This was a bit of a disambiguation page...
- I think it is convenient that the Help link which is in the interface directly points to a page with links to many help pages. For other matters there is the link to the Main page. If there were any links in this page to which you have no longer easy access, then you can add them to help:contents (we can make a template to keep Meta-specific contents separate) or main page. Meta:About is already linked from the top of the main page.--Patrick 09:55, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- You are very right, if we proceed with templatizing the Help:contents page, then we can include more help table's of contents directly into the more general help. I think I'll continue the process, as it isn't too hard to revert...
- Also, I want the help namespace to be more general.. and MediaWiki_help: to be about the software... however, namespaces are so very awkward... can't we just use categories to organize this data? I fail to see any benifit of namespaces after futher thinking, other than to arbitrarily categorize pages, in a really inflexible way. AaronPeterson 03:34, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Categories are not very flexible either, e.g. to rename one you have to edit all pages in it.
- The prefix/namespace "Help:" gives a clear separation between pages that we want to keep the same in all projects, and other pages. Fortunately there are few pages in other projects with such a name already without being the same.--Patrick 05:32, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- with namespaces, one must move the page, rather than just edit the page.,, and, one must do a whole lot of editing of wiki link editing... unless there was some sort of "look in current namespace first" feature.. where we don't have to specify the "help:" portion of the namespace.. if we are already in the namespace... I'd love to use namespaces if we didn't have to specify the help: except to disambiguate when more than one page exists of the same name AaronPeterson 13:07, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Forums
editAre there no Mediawiki forums. I read somewhere that there is a mailing list but I find mailing lists are difficult places to speak to because (1) questions disappear in time and bumbing them is obtrustive (2) questions are obtrustive. -- Tim
- Probably the answer to that question is 'right here!'. Any wiki discussion page is a forum. It's perhaps not the same as the forums you're used to, because you can edit the comments made by other people, but it does work. Use the 'watch page' feature to see when people reply.
- Another question: which discussion page is the best place to ask questions? I dont know the answer to that actually. It could be that there should be some more dedicated discussion pages e.g. one called 'Installation Help'. -- Harry Wood 07:54, 21 July 2005 (UTC)
- I agree- Wikis are good for building and storing content- not discussions. There must be som fora somewhere?

Installing wiki on dreamhost
editI've got problems installing wiki on dreamhost.com
Now, please keep in mind that I am a beginner at this, so please speak slowly.
I created my database, which is working fine. I uploaded the wiki files to http://www.adlibbed.com/wiki I went through the installation process. No problem were flagged. I click on "Click here to go to your wiki" and the URL changes to : http://www.adlibbed.com/cgi-system/php.cgi/index.php?title=Main_Page
I can go to: http://www.adlibbed.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page and I'll see a non styled version of the install. What am I doing wrong? Can anybody point me in the right direction? That would be wonderful.

An advanced question on creating custom edit buttons
editWe've installed WikiMedia on our server, it's running great. I can't believe how little space it consumes to create new pages when compared to our old site. My main question is on the edit buttons when you edit a page.
To be specific, these:
How can I go about creating my own custom buttons. I'd like to make three for text for aligning left, center, and right, seperate them into groups (text, image) etc. --Brownc4 04:36, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- Support for custom edit buttons was added in 1.9, see http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Custom_edit_buttons for some pointers. --129.217.165.187 13:15, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
I take it either no one knows, this isn't possible, or someone is thinking RTFM and won't post.--Brownc4 03:31, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
I tried to create my own button for strikeout text. When I did this it caused errors despite having folooed the format of the existing toolbar buttons. What is the trick here? It think the relevant code in around line 756 in include/EditPage.php
in the getEditToolBar function.
function getEditToolbar() { global $wgStylePath, $wgLang, $wgMimeType; /** * toolarray an array of arrays which each include the filename of * the button image (without path), the opening tag, the closing tag, * and optionally a sample text that is inserted between the two when no * selection is highlighted. * The tip text is shown when the user moves the mouse over the button. * * Already here are accesskeys (key), which are not used yet until someone * can figure out a way to make them work in IE. However, we should make * sure these keys are not defined on the edit page. */ $toolarray=array( array( 'image'=>'button_bold.png', 'open' => "\'\'\'", 'close' => "\'\'\'", 'sample'=> wfMsg('bold_sample'), 'tip' => wfMsg('bold_tip'), 'key' => 'B' ), ... Array Continues
I added my own array item but it was not rendered correcly. I even created a nice button image :) . Anyone have any ideas? --Hepaestus 22:25, August 6th 2005

A simple question
editHi, I'm a bit suprised by the lack of statistic in the mediawiki software. Is there a special 'page' that displays the number of edit for each registered users? If not, how would one get started on creating it (I know php/mysql quite well). I could find the answer to that question in the meta-wiki help.
how to customize the 'recent' changes view?
editIs it possible to 'hide' edits from certain users on that page? either programmatically or through url params? Cheers!
- You can hide changes by adding the bot flag to that user.

Is Wikimedia being used in corporations?
editI was thinking of building our "Knowledge Base" (public facing site) for my company using Wikimedia. However, when I look at the sites that are using Wikimedia, I don't see many (if any) for-profit businesses listed. Am I missing something? Is there some reason that businesses aren't using Wikis to power their external Knowledge Bases?
- At the company I work at, a Wiki server has been setup within Engineering but it's currently being used more as a dumping ground for random bits of information. I think people there are still unsure of how to best use it. --69.84.127.200 15:57, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Namespaces vs separate projects in a single Mediawiki instance
editHi all,
We are installing a single instance of Mediawiki to serve a particular user community, but the content on the wiki will be coming from three or four distinct groups in the company, so I'm wondering what is the best way to organize pages, naming conventions etc., so that page names are user friendly while remaining unique.
I've read about namespaces but they confuse me...
I know how to create a custom namespace in LocalSettings.php, but since I would then need to create all pages within that namespace by prefixing them with the namespace name e.g. project x:faq , why don't I just have a convention among content contributors that says, "all pages must begin with "project x:". Surely this achieves the same end goal of having a set of uniquely-named pages with a common prefix?
- The last part of Help:Namespace#Namespace_uses lists some features of namespaces which do not apply for just prefixes.--Patrick 13:09, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
The other thing I've been reading about here is projects.
There's a comparison table of namespaces in a single project versus multiple projects, but what's not clear to me is whether each project would require a separate installation of Mediawiki or you can host multiple project on one installation of Mediawiki. I'd like for that to be true, but can't find instructions here for how to set up such projects.
Any help/comments much appreciated, Chris Neal cneal@novell.com
Backup of the articles/pages
editIn which directory of the server are the individual articles/pages of a MediaWiki stored? Are these pages stored indidivually in a specific folder or compressed in one single file? How can a backup of the articles/pages be made?
Language support
editIt is very easy to link corresponding articles of different languages together. But how do you add/activate a new language to an already existing English-language Wiki? For example, you have already 100 articles in English in your Wiki and no other language. Then, you decide that you want to add the corresponding 100 articles for example in the German language to your Wiki. How do you add the German language? I searched for an answer but it seems to be nowhere described how you add a new language. Do you have to install additional languages already when you create your wiki? Does it matter how the language is included into the address? For example, Wikipedia includes its languages like "en.wikipedia ... " into its address and Memory-Alpha, for includes the language like this: "memory-alpha.org/en/". How do you program this addresses as a system administrator? User:Citylover (unfortunately, I have deleted the file on my computer where I stored my password, so have lost my password for my account on MediaWiki as User:Citylover, is it possible to send me my password?)

Could not load MySQL driver!
editI have installed MediaWiki 1.5.6 on a Windows 2000 system (incl. IIS). Additionaly I am using PHP 5.1.2 and MySQL 5. The installation of all these components seems to be ok. I also enabled the MySQL-support in PHP 5 by loading the extension php_mysql.dll. When I start configuring Mediawiki (../config/index.php) there appears the following error:
Warning: dl() [function.dl]: Not supported in multithreaded Web servers - use extension=php_mysql.so in your php.ini in C:\Mediawiki\install-utils.inc on line 17 Could not load MySQL driver! Please compile php --with-mysql or install the mysql.so module.
That the dl()-function won't work is obvious. But why doesn't MediaWiki recognize that the mysql module is already loaded??
By querying the php installation, I get the following the result: C:\>php -m [PHP Modules] bcmath calendar com_dotnet ctype date dom ftp iconv libxml mysql odbc pcre Reflection session SimpleXML SPL standard tokenizer wddx xml xmlreader xmlwriter zlib [..]
So what do I have to do to get my MediaWiki installation run?? Thanks a lot.

NAMESPACE:DEFINE
editAs far as I can tell, some of the namespaces are required for the system to function as designed, such as the "Special", "MediaWiki", "User", and "Help". However, It gets a bit confusing from there. For instance, if I name $wgSitename is "TEST" what is the difference between the "TEST" namespace and "(Main)" namespace?
I initially thought they were the same thing, but I found that by going to a namespace URL (such as http://localhost/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Allpages&namespace=0) I get a really cool dropbox with all the namespaces. There, I find that they are BOTH listed and generate a different list of documents (Articles?).
ANSWER:
Also, is there any significance to the other names? I mean, the "Template" and "Category" namespaces are empty and do not appear to be integral to the site. That is, while the "Help" namespace is also empty, I have seen some links that lead to it - implying that the Help content needs to be added. Yet, I see nothing linking to the "Template" and "Category" namespaces. Could these be renamed? Could they be eliminated?
ANSWER:
Oh, and is "Category" namespace actually for creating new categories? I thought this was the function of the namespaces?
ANSWER:
Finally, can one design a structure with sub-categories? That is, could I have a Fruit category/namespace and a Vegetable category/namespace, with each having sub-categories/namespaces? The idea being that I could go to the URL above and use the dropbox to go to the Fruit namespace and see all documents in the namespace, but go to some other URL and see just the "Apple" sub-category/namespace of documents?
ANSWER:
If all this is clearly defined somewhere I'm not too lazy to read it -- I just can't find it to read. So if there are helpful URLs please post them here. Otherwise I would appreciate an answer from the WikiPros.
Thank you in advance.
- Check out Help:Variable (1st section), Help:Colon function#NS (the NS stuff), Help:Namespace (dunno), Help:Category (that's for categories), etc.
- On a fresh installation some namespaces are probably empty, e.g. all ODD namespaces (= talk namespaces, ignoring -1 = Special). Youz can definitely rename namespace 4 (here it's Meta) for the "project" pages. That also affects 5 = Meta_talk (here). You can also do what you like with 100 and above (customized). But apparently getting more empty namespaces isn't your plan... :-) -- Omniplex (w:t) 22:56, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Programmatically Upload files into MediaWiki

What i want to do is to modify the TOC in a way that when we click on, as an example, "This is where we put our list of guests" on the TOC i'm not taken down to the same page but to another one, like if i clicked on the link outside of the table of contents. The TOC is automatically generated and i can't edit it's properties. Or can i?
Any help, please?
Thank you B.
- That is not possible. Actually, it would also be confusing, the TOC is not supposed to contain other links than to contents on the page. Anyway, you can put any link you like before or after the TOC.--Patrick 23:02, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
- To link to a section, use the # symbol, like this: [[This is where we put such and such details|Example article#Section on such and such details]]. Did that all make sense? 152.13.74.25 23:20, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Historical talkpage question
editI have a question of more historical interest than anything... why did the developers origianally make the talkpages wiki-editable as well, instead of having them funtion like a normal forum with self-editing, given that changing other people's comments is generally not acceptable? 152.13.74.25 23:17, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- One reason is probably the convenience, both for developers and users, to have the same system on content pages and talk pages. Also, some editing of someone else's comments can be acceptable and useful, e.g. fixing a link, or adding nowiki tags around cited code.--Patrick 06:37, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
I have Problems with the search page
editHi! I have 3 instances of mediawiki working, and none of them have the search working.
Even if you type the name of an article, the search returns no results.
How can I get it to work normally?
Thanks!
SQL Server database?
editIs it currently possible to use SQL Server to host the database rather than MySQL?
i am blocked i think, have yet to read an article or do anything but create an account, and i am blocked from using it or contacting people i think. new computer owner, new to wikipedia, HELP!
editsomeone please email me with instructions at "surfiname@hotmail.com". my username is drysponge,i wonder if i should just try to open a new account, but i guess that there is some system in place to prevent abusers from setting up multiple identities from one computer. i am already blocked and i think that i was accused of vandalism but i'm not sure of that, even; i attempted to do something and was prevented from doing so, "vandalism" was the reason given, but vandalism on whose part it did not specify. i have not attempted to edit anything, i cannot see how i should be accused of vandalism, and possibly i'm not however i seem to be unable to log in or to do many things due to being blocked as well as due to my own ignorance. i would not inconvenience you simply because i am unwilling to learn how to use this site using the help menus, i really think that i do not have the necessary access. i first created my account in an attempt to use wikiversity to learn how to use my computer, i have found myself needing to learn to use whatever part of the site i'm in now to hopefully learn why i can't learn how to learn how to use my computer. please let it stop here! Thankyou for your time, Drysponge
How to create a page like "Recent changes"?
editHi, I have installed mediawiki (1.6.10: my ISP doesn't support higher version of php so I couldn't install newer version of mediawiki) and adding new pages.
I want to have a page (or section) that shows (lists) recently created pages; similar with "Recent changes" but I want a very simpler (and manageable) one. New pages only; no modified ones.
E.g., it will shows the list of new pages with certain number with information like; New pages title, new page date, some brief descriptions from the content (just beginning or the content).
Do I need a special extension or need to write php for that? I am new on php. So any comments will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

- That is what Special:Newpages does.--Patrick (talk) 00:43, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Good thanks. Is there a way to have that in as a section on a page (with having smaller number of outputs (e.g., 10 instead of 50) so it can be in smaller space? -- --71.135.59.237 05:42, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes,
{{Special:Newpages/3}}
gives

This requires a setting to allow the page to be includable, see also mw:Manual:Special pages.--Patrick (talk) 08:01, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Large image problem
editHi, I am facing a problem with big images. I am able to upload big images (resolution of 2000 x 1500 with 500kb size) by ignoring warnings. But when it comes to display it (the image page), the page won’t show up with an error: HTTP 500 Internal Server Error. And I can’t remove it from the wiki since that page won’t come out. Only solution I have now is make the image smaller (samller than 1600x1200 is ok) and upload again to replace that. And then I can remove it if I want to.
Some questions; - What is the problem? - How can I avoid this problem? - How can I block uploading big size of images (or files)?
I am using media wiki version 1.6.10 (my ISP has lower version of php so I had to use version of wiki).
Thanks in advance, --Jimyoo 03:45, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
