International Museum Day 2024/Image campaign
International Museum Day 2024 is a call to improve the visibility of museums around the world and represent this year's theme: Museums for Education and Research. Individual Wikimedians, affiliates, and user groups, are invited to respond to three challenges to increase museum coverage on Wikimedia: translation, media, and data.
For the media challenge, you’re invited to share photographs that illustrate how the museum is working with education-related themes and research.
- Discover the dedicated educational areas of the museum;
- Attend outreach and education events or workshops;
- Find the museum library or archive;
- Tour a specific exhibit;
- Document accessibility and interpretation resources;
- Attend a family program or museum night.

Add structured data to your uploads. |
Keep these recommendations in mind:
- Check the Wikimedia Commons pages with guidelines on how to take quality images or featured pictures:
- Consider the technical quality of the images: exposure, composition, movement control, depth of field, perspective, proportion, color.
- When taking the photograph also consider its originality;
- And how this image might be useful for the Wikimedia projects;
- Don't forget to add categories, structured data, and file captions to your uploads. This information makes your images more findable and accessible. If necessary, use this 'First steps' guide to direct your upload process.
The guided upload process will automatically place your images in the overall International Museum Day category, but please add more specific and appropriate categories to your photos. This will keep Wikimedia Commons in order and your images will be found more easily.
We also recommend that each file should be:
- A photograph taken and uploaded personally;
- Uploaded during the call to action period (May 1 - May 31);
- Licensed with a CC BY-SA license;
- Respectful and not violate personal privacy or copyright;
While this year's theme is Museums for Education and Research, you may also upload more general museum images in the category, Images from International Museum Day 2024. You can also upload images you have taken in the past.
This is not a global competition with prizes but local organizers may decide to organize contests.
