Background

edit

I'm an Internet user, wikipedian and musician. Internet makes music scores much more accessible to me and 7 billion others. There are some major project on this subject...

The problem is that,

  • IMSLP stores only raster (PDFs) versions of scores.
  • Mutopia has no good revision control system and no real community.

That's why I think MediaWiki software and Wikisource community is really much better place for this.

The plan

edit
  1. Make MediaWiki to allow uploads of Lilypond files (.ly). This format is supported and preferred[1] on MediaWiki, but (for now) only in wikitext. We should report a bug on Bugzilla.
  2. Transfer to Commons PD files from IMSLP and other projects. We should create a project on Commons curating this action.
  3. Make MediaWiki able to edit Lilypond files. We need feedback on this.

Please support,

Some comments

  1. For Wikisource RFCs, we would generally utilise oldwikisource:Wikisource:Scriptorium and alert each of the WS communities.
  2. Wikisources are already utilising mw:Extension:Score for this and you can see some of the existing works at English Wikisource usage
  3. The use of Score has an existing relationship with lilypond (exactly how is not my area of strength) and would think that you should look to see how close they are.

  • Can I first point out that there is already an RfC open on this topic, see Requests for comment/Musical score transcription project proposal? It seems to have got bogged down with no real conclusions. I think that Billinghurst's suggestion of moving the discussion to oldwikisource is probably the best way to gain traction.

At en:Wikisource we've also had a discussion about this (see s:Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2013-08#Music and project scope).

Having done the bulk of the scores in the English Wikisource so far, I have found that even the simplest looking score snippets require a considerable investment of time and energy to get them right. This would mean that the investment required in reproducing Tallis' Spem in alium or the Saint-Saëns Third Symphony would be huge. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:15, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Oppose If something can be stored as wikitext, it is better to do so as it makes it easier for people to modify the content. It seems to be a bad idea to allow uploads of Lilypond files since you can easily store the Lilypond source in the wikicode instead. Scans of music books may be useful for the same reason as scans of text books may be useful. --Stefan2 (talk) 15:41, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hey, just a note that in the Editing team in Wikimedia Engineering we've talked a few times about there being the opportunity to provide a tool to visually edit sheet music that currently has to be hand-written using Lilypond in the browser, by "simply" writing a plugin for this for VisualEditor. This would be really amazing, though really hard. However, I'm not sure this is the right venue for discussion about changes to the software that the Wikisource community want – either on Wikisource (as billinghurst said) or on MediaWiki with the volunteers who built the current system.
