Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Campidanese Sardinian

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Eligible language. You are encouraged to contribute on incubator:Wp/sro. --Millosh (talk) 19:36, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code sro (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Campidanese Language name in English
Language name sardu campidanesu Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q35348 - item has currently the following values: Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikipedia "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Central Europe "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

edit

Sardinian is the home language of almost 1.500.000 in Sardinia. It's historically divided in two macrogroups of dialects which gratly differs in fonetics. They have historically developed two literary standards. Attemts of the Governament of Sardinia to unify this two dialects are failed due the opposition of the people. Actually all southern sardinians are using a ortografic and gramatic standard defined by the governament of the Province of Cagliari, the capital of the island. 1.000.000 are capable to understand campidanian and probably 800.000 people can actively speak it. It's largerly the most spoken of the two sardinian dialects and is the language of the almost 500.000 inhabitants of the metropolitan area of Cagliari.

Discussion

edit

For now you should add articles in the languages on the sardu campidanesu test Wikipedia or even perhaps the Sardinian Wikipedia. I have one question: Are you sure these languages cannot be together in one project, like nrm: does with Jèrriais, Guernésiais? πr2 (tc) 15:03, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

yes I am sure
Then please do this. πr2 (tc) 15:15, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am in disagreement with the proponent. In fact, Sardinian Wikipedia invites the user to write in Campidanese dialect, it is just written in the section Iscrie in Sardu (Write in Sardinian). The new wiki is not really necessary. Tokvo (talk) 11:37, 26 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you are right but the discussion in Sardinia about the two major dialects of Sardinian is developing towards two language standards. It has been set up by local sub-regional auctorities. In addition, the mutual intelligibility between northern and southern sardinians is difficult and, actually, we use italian !! Sardinian language is not compulsory teached , and common people can't write it and has difficulties to read it at all in his own dialects. This is the situation of most regional languages in Europe. There is also an anthrpological difference between north and south sardinians that's very radicated so the attempts to unify the language are failed. Sardinian is a indangered language but history did not brought us an unified grammar and orthography. People want pupils to learn the language and many projects in this way are produced in schools. In the south of Sardinia these projects are about Campidanese as the others varieties are refused as strangers, not teached and not fully understood. That's the real situation: sardinian has had two storical standards and this is actual development. It's not a problem of provincialism, not only probably, it's simply a mutually understanding problem.

Campidanese Sardinian is one of the two written standards of the Sardinian language, which is often considered one of the most, if not the most conservative of all the Romance languages. The name Campidanu refers to the area located around Guspini and Villacidro. Campidanese can be found across the entire Province of Cagliari, in the Province of Medio Campidano area and extends into parts of the Province of Nuoro: Ogliastra area and in the southern half of the Province of Oristano, the capital included.--Sirmio Cabinigre 20:20, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The Wikipedia project in Campidanese language grows in the number of pages [1] and quality [2] - [3]. Thanks for your attention.--Sirmio Cabinigre 20:32, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fausta Samaritani You may want to see why scwiki administrators don't support your efforts at the link I provided, thanks too. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:25, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The administrators of scwiki do not represent people who speak Campidanese, or those who speak Logudorese, or Sardinian or Sassarese. There is much to do to grow and improve scwiki, and administrators do, so successfully. I have collaborated on 140 different Wikipedia, with almost 90,000 edits (10,000 on Incubator).--Sirmio Cabinigre 09:18, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fausta SamaritaniThen why L2212, among other scwiki administrators, consider your contributions are 1. not related to any actual project guideline and it also makes no sense, exactly like creating a lot of pages just to have a bigger number of articles; 2. considering it a different language compared to Campidanesu or Logudoresu is simply incorrect; 3. would just damage the sc.wiki project and put even more stress on the already few available editors to create smaller projects with way less information, interactions and usefulness; and 4. nobody, no matter the orthography used, wanted to follow your idea after you asked multiple times (and you weren't the first one) have you just considered the possibility that maybe there was a good reason for it, I'm realllll(65535*l)ly waiting for your answers to concerns about you, concerns from scwiki administrators, and concerns that whether should I request to revoke eligibility of this RFL. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:00, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fausta Samaritani: Anyway, Dk1919 Franking on enwiki w:Special:Diff/1097720500 pointed me that scwiki is already existing and well-established providing Campidanese contents. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:45, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Based on Fausta's behavior investigation at incubator:I:RFD#Wp/sro, I decide to Oppose this RFL, as their behaviors are globally inappropriate, they shall be checkusered, if possible. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:35, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also Oppose this RFL, for all the reasons already explained in the discussion mentioned by @Liuxinyu970226 and the previous ones as well (1, 2). The user Fausta Samaritani/Sirmio Cabinigre, who does not speak Sardinian and clearly does not care about the opinions of the ones who do, has been trying to push for a split of that language for reasons that makes no sense from a linguistic or practical point of view, with the objective to do it even more to create a "constellation of wikis" (sic) with a wiki for every single dialect (there are hundreds of those). That would just damage the sc.wiki project (that already allows users to write using the Campidanese orthography and has rules and templates for that) for no good reason. Therefore, I request for the eligibility to be revoked. L2212 (talk) 00:29, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose I don’t see enough of a difference to justify creating a separate wiki for a slightly different orthography. Dronebogus (talk) 20:27, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
