Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Lushootseed

Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).
The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.
|
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | lut (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | Lushootseed | Language name in English |
Language name | dxʷləšucid/txʷəlšucid | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | Q33658 - item has currently the following values:
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | LTR | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Site URL | lut.wikipedia.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | Wikipedia | "Wikipedia" in your language |
Project namespace | usually the same as the project name | |
Project talk namespace | "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) | |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). | |
Default project timezone | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) | |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |
Additional settings | Anything else that should be set | |
Proposal
editLushootseed is an endangered Native American language spoken by tribes in the Puget Sound (x̌ʷəlč) area. Although the late elder en:taqʷšəblu (Vi Hilbert) was the most recent native speaker, there are fluent adult speakers like Zalmai Zahir (ʔəswəli) and Tami Hohn who both teach the language. And of course there is a growing Lushootseed learner community, including native and non-native learners. The language's grammar and vocabulary are well documented, as well as guidelines for constructing new words.
Online resources to support Lushootseed revitalization have also been growing in recent years. The Puyallup and Tulalip tribes have put resources up on the web [1] [2]. The canonical dictionary has been made publicly available online. And, all the Lushootseed letters are supported by Unicode (e.g. ɬ, ƛ̕, x̌ʷ)
This is an endangered language, so the number of fluent speakers is low, but creating a Wikipedia would be an important tool in the language revitalization process. I hope that once Lushootseed Wikipedia grows and adds editors from the Lushootseed speaking & learning community, the Language Committee will approve a WP subdomain. Until then, I hope that this project can be verified for eligibility.

- I am a Lushootseed (Tulalip dialect) speaker. I have been interested in working on this for a long time. I know that many of the people at the Tulalip Language Department would be/are interested in this sort of thing as well. @AdJHu How long have you been learning? Are you connected to the community in any way? PersusjCP (talk) 03:21, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
