Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Pothwari

submitted verification final decision

Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.

    This proposal is on hold:

The language's ISO 639 code is valid, and the content that has been contributed to the Incubator till now looks reasonable. However, the Language proposal policy also has another requirement: "The language must be sufficiently unique that it could not coexist on a more general wiki". It is unclear whether this language is sufficiently different from other languages under the "Lahnda" (lah) macrolanguage according to the ISO 639 classification. We received a confirmation from a language expert that Saraiki (skr) is distinct from Punjabi (Western, Shahnukhi script, pnb), so a Wikipedia in that language was created. To mark this language here as "eligible", the Language committee needs a similar confirmation that phr is sufficiently unique and distinct from Punjabi and Saraiki, or a reliable written source saying so. The creators of this request and the authors of the content in the Incubator are encouraged to provide such a source or to consider merging their work with the Saraiki Wikipedia (skr) or the Western Punjabi Wikipedia (pnb). — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Amire80 (talk) 2024-11-04 (UTC)
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code phr (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Pothwari Language name in English
Language name پوٹھواری Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q33739 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality RTL Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name پوٹھواری "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Continent/City "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Discussion

When Pothwari language page will be active?

  • Comment: Punjabi lacks a true "standard" dialect, and everybody who speaks it could be said to speak a distinctive regional variety, or more often, a mix of dialects. Any of the contributions on the Pothohari incubator would be entirely welcome on pnb.wikipedia.org and read by a wider audience. I do not think creating a separate wiki is a good idea as on Western Punjabi Wikipedia given that for years there have only been two active contributors. That is for a site that represents the 10th most spoken language in the world, and most spoken language in Pakistan—any new contributions at all are very much needed and it would be more fruitful if efforts were made to improve it rather than make a split it into smaller parts.
Writing articles on pnb.wikipedia in Pothohari sounds like a great idea on the other hand and if absolutely necessary some additional measures to accomodate that could be easily made. On English Wikipedia, editors can use a template to indicate that they have written an article in a particular English dialect (such as American English or Pakistani English) so that other contributors can maintain the article in a consistent style. The same could be done on Punjabi Wikipedia, and extended to any dialect (not just Pothohari), while still being accessible to the many potential readers and writers who use a mix of dialects or are not concerned with these distinctions. --عُثمان (talk) 18:32, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
