Proposal summary
Please read the handbook for requesters for help using this template correctly.

Since the last voting the language received an ISO 639-3 code (szl). The result of the vote was "rejected", but people were still writing articles in Silesian on Polish Wikipedia (see pl:Kategoria:Śląska Wikipedia). It seems to be high time to move to own Wikipedia project. Some people say that Silesian is a language and some that it's a dialect. The exact number of people speaking Silesian is not known, but according to the estimate given at Polish and English Wikipedias it is approximately 1.25 million.

Arguments in favour

edit
  • Regardless of whether the language is perceived to be a dialect or a language of its own, the ISO code ought to change the perspective a bit. The number of speakers seems to justify the need to create a WIkipedia in Silesian, also the articles in the language on Polish Wikipedia (see category link above) - I understand they have been created after the community was encouraged to do so when the previous vote ended. The Silesian-speaking community on Polish Wikipedia is quite a big one, much larger than e.g. Kashubian one, which is barely noticeable, but which enjoys a Wikipedia project in Kashubian. I feel it is therefore justified to grant the Silesian-speaking community a chance to have a project of their own. Wojciech Pędzich Talk 11:11, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Any language has a right to have its own wikipedia. If there are more than 1 million speakers of Silesian, it's really strange that they still haven't got one. --Riwnodennyk 20:47, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. It is a natural consequence of receiving an ISO code. And the Polish Wikipedia community won't keep the category "Silesian Wikipedia" anymore, as "written not in Polish" - if so, Silesian-speaking users needs own Wikipedia. Lajsikonik 21:45, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. It's a good time to open Silesian Wikipedia. In Poland for many years people speaking in Silesian were considered to be uneducated and too lazy to learn Polish. Now Silesian is again considered as something important. People are making portals in silesian, writing books in that language and they feels proud of using it. Why not allow them to start Wikipedia? Herr Kriss 22:04, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Creation Silesian Wikipedia this only matter of time. On pl.Wikipedia polish peoples want to remove articles in Silesian language (on Portal/Wikiproject "Silesian Wikipedia", not main space of names) because these are not articles and pages in Polish language (see Page of Articles for deletion on pl.Wikipedia). It's a best time to open Silesian Wikipedia. Secondary matter , it is a natural consequence of receiving an ISO code. LUCPOL 11:50, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. I think it will have a very good effect also on the Polish Wikipedia. As mentioned above by wpedzich and LUCPOL, there were some attempts to add Silesian content to plWiki and it has caused much controversy on many occasions. Creating Silesian Wiki would clarify the situation by eliminating all content in languages other than Polish from plWiki. Powerek38 13:19, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. It will be more practical than abusing the Polish Wikipedia. Patrol110 14:03, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I would probably not call it "abusing", since as I've been told the articles in question had been written after the previous vote, to show the community whether there is any need and drive to create Silesian-language content. However, the need to keep only Polish-language content in pl.wikipedia seems to be a major argument in the discussion that's going on in the project at the moment (although I hope that it is not the only reason for supporting the language here). • Support- enough users to open (but prob. much less tnan 1.25M); different eneough (as a pl native i dont unerstand it :) ) and we cannot keep it on pl:wiki. Regards! Vuvar1 14:00, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Silesian Wikipedia should be separate from Polish Wikipedia. Leinad 15:30, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - yes, yes, yes ;) Pudelek 09:11, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: Native speakers of Silesian are willing to contribute to this project in the long-term, hence this project has the potential to flourish like the other Slavic language Wikipedia editions such as Kashubian, Upper Sorbian etc. Therefore the Silesian language ought to be given the opportunity and priviledge to have its own language edition of Wikipedia. --Jose77 08:21, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support: The fact that there are more than 300 in articles is a very strong proof that there are many people interested in this project! --Wisconsus 19:42, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: At least 100 ths. native speakers. Picus viridis 21:55, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
