Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Tai Nüa

submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

There doesn't seem to be any issues with eligibility, and editing has started on incubatorwiki. --Sotiale (talk) 05:53, 11 September 2022 (UTC) - Approved on 2024-09-23, phabricator:T375422. --MF-W 19:43, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code tdd (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Tai Nüa Language name in English
Language name ᥑᥣᥛᥰ ᥖᥭᥰ ᥖᥬᥲ ᥑᥨᥒᥰ Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q36556 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name ᥝᥤᥱ ᥑᥤᥱ ᥚᥤᥱ ᥖᥤᥱ ᥕᥣᥱ "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace ᥝᥤᥱ ᥑᥤᥱ ᥚᥤᥱ ᥖᥤᥱ ᥕᥣᥱ usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace ᥟᥧᥙᥱ ᥐᥧᥛ ᥝᥤᥱ ᥑᥤᥱ ᥚᥤᥱ ᥖᥤᥱ ᥕᥣᥱ "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-tdd.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Yangon "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

@Sai Dai Sai Laing, Yang Yan Ao Thuan, Canntoia, Sæ̀ Tậng, and Chon Lok: For the creation of the wiki, we need to get the settings correct. Please have a look at the table at the top of this page and check whether everything is correct, e.g. the translation for "Wikipedia". Also, a translation for the MediaWiki namespaces is needed. "Wikipedia talk" is being asked in the table above. And you can also fill out the table below for the remaining namespaces:

	NS_MEDIA            => 'Media',
	NS_SPECIAL          => 'Special',
	NS_TALK             => 'Talk',

@MF-Warburg: Thank you and this is the translation. --User:Yang Yan Ao Thuan

Thanks! --MF-W 19:48, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Yang Yan Ao Thuan, @DaiMengMaoLong, some questions:
  1. In most of the "talk" namespaces, the first word is "ᥟᥧᥙᥱ", but in "category talk", the first word is "ᥟᥧᥛᥱ". Is it correct?
  2. I see that in the name "MediaWiki", the ending is "ᥝᥤᥱ ᥑᥤᥱ", which looks like "wiki", and this is correct. But the beginning is "ᥔᥪᥱ ᥑᥣᥝᥱ", which is the same as the word "media" in the beginning. "MediaWiki" is a name, so it should be transliterated and not fully translated.
  3. Related to the previous point: is "media" translated correctly? It's supposed to mean multimedia, such as pictures and video. It's not supposed to mean "journalism".

@Yang Yan Ao Thuan, @DaiMengMaoLong Awaiting your response to @Amire80's request above. Once your input is received, the next steps for the wiki creation will proceed. Thank you! SSethi (WMF) (talk) 19:49, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, thank you for the questions. For the "talk" in category talk, it is a mistake, it should be ᥟᥧᥙᥱ, thank for the reminder. For the media one, this is as we follow the Shan and Chinese translation, as သိုဝ်ႇၶၢဝ်ႇ and méitǐ, they both translate the word but not keeping the sound, but they don’t mean multimedia. If it should not be fully translated, then may be just keep the sound, so that "ᥛᥤᥱ ᥖᥤᥱ ᥕᥣᥱ (mǐ tǐ yǎa)" can be used, and that MediaWiki is "ᥛᥤᥱ ᥖᥤᥱ ᥕᥣᥱ ᥝᥤᥱ ᥑᥤᥱ".
