Potential advocacy areas

edit

I added the following advocacy items, based on Dimi's suggestion on Advocacy Advisors. These are only a starting point for discussion -- feel free to add new topics or re-structure the list. - Stephen LaPorte (WMF) (talk) 20:42, 23 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Draft list

edit
  • Fundamental goals
    • Shorten (or prevent extension) of copyright terms
    • Raising threshold for required added creativity
    • Standardized limitations and exceptions
    • Opt-in copyright system (like patent law)
  • Issue-oriented goals
    • Government Works (We need to discuss the relationship between government works/publicly funded works and what we want to go for.)
    • Freedom of Panorama
    • Orphan Works
    • Open Access/Open Educational Resources (in OA we want freely licensed content, therefore I am grouping these two together)

There are two things about the above list I'd like to have discussed:

  • Should we concentrate on government created works or on government funded works or on publicly funded works?
  • Is it enough to talk about opt-in copyright or do we need to also specifically mention orphan works?

--Dimi z (talk) 21:00, 23 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • I think each of these three need the attention. The first priority is the government created works.
  • I think it would be good to mention orphan works as that is probably less problematic.

Just also wanted to add, that most of the above is in line with the Strategic Planning, at least on the movement's side. --Dimi z (talk) 12:08, 4 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposal: Rename the page to "Past Wikimedia Community Advocacy"

edit

The last substantive change to this page was in November 2021, and that one immediately before that in August 2015. The Wikimedia Foundation has established a Global Advocacy team within the Legal department since then. To avoid confusing readers who are searching for advocacy efforts and actions, I propose to rename the page to "Past Wikimedia Community Advocacy." — ~~~~~ MVerde-WMF (talk) 20:46, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@MVerde-WMF: this could be a primary landing page for all movement advocacy programs, past and present. On Meta, we usually use subpages to add new pages under a certain topic. I would suggest your team to follow this. RamzyM (talk) 00:23, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the recommendation! I amend my proposal to rename the page to "Wikimedia Community Advocacy" then, without the "Past" at the beginning, so that it can be as comprehensive as you are suggesting we make it. — MVerde-WMF (talk) 16:55, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the continued discussion off-wiki, @RamzyM! As recommended, I made sure to add the following text box to the page:
After further discussion within the Global Advocacy team, it became clearer that the page should be renamed "Past Wikimedia Community Advocacy." We'll be sure to update it in due course so that readers know where to find present and ongoing community public policy advocacy efforts on Meta-Wiki.
Cheers, and thanks once more for the conversations and recommendations! — MVerde-WMF (talk) 15:34, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
