Hi Dimi, thanks a lot for contributing to the Bulgarian translation! As it is already 95% complete, it would be great if you or someone else could finish the rest so that it can be publicized to the Bulgarian speaking community (on Facebook/Twitter/the wikis). Also, in case you have any feedback or insight about how to facilitate the translation process - e.g. by identifying and avoiding terms that are hard to translate -, feel free to comment here. Hi, thank you for the soft poke here! The law will apply of photos of works inside the EU. Period. If there is any risk of legal contamination, it would be because the USA and the EU are quite often regarded by other countries as role models and their laws are often copied. --Dimi z (talk) 05:57, 29 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Can you elaborate on why the protection would not be extended to works located outside the EU? I mean, on other types of works (books, movies etc.) the protection does extend to works published/authored in other Berne countries outside the EU, right?--Anders Feder (talk) 00:10, 1 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
According to the framework copyright is territorial, thus the country's rules where the images are being published/targeted at counts. In this line of thought, if there was no Freedom of Panorama in Germany, a picture of the New World Trade Center in New York would also become illegal (unless you clear permission with the rightholder first). --Dimi z (talk) 17:29, 1 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Personal acquaintances: invitation

edit

Hello Dimi z, On the German-language Wikipedia the community has introduced a system for several years in what users conform that they have met other users in real life. This system was created to create more trust between users and thus creating a better and nicer place to work on the wiki. On the German-language Wikipedia it is a huge success and I translated a large part of this tool in English so that also users from other Wikipedias can use it. It only makes sense to sign up into the system if you have met at least three other users in person. You can sign up for the tool, after three other users confirm they have met you, you can confirm other users yourself. About this system, more information can be found at w:en:Wikipedia:Personal acquaintances. In the green section are the instructions. On w:en:Wikipedia:Personal acquaintances/Participants will grow a list of participants who are active in the English speaking parts of the world. It would be great if would you sign up! :-) Greetings - Romaine (talk) 15:08, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

PS: On the German-language Wikipedia, everything is translated into English, but you need perhaps to set your preferences on English to show it in this language. Romaine (talk) 15:08, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help decide the future of Wikimania

edit

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 22:01, 12 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review

edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

An update from the Sustainability Initiative

edit

Thank you for supporting the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Dimi! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

What's new?

We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)

What's next?

Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

Please help!

Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:

  • Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
  • Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
  • Improve and translate the project page on Meta.

If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey und Gnom, 2 April 2017

Italy, again

edit

Hi Dimi, I just wanted to link this post on the Italian Wikipedia Village Pump about the new "evolutions" of our beloved Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape. I think you might be interested, if you need any translation do not hesitate to ask.

  • On one side we have now a brand new fees schedule listing all the amounts we should pay for any possible use of reproductions of cultural heritage.
  • On the other side we have a very recent court judgment which states the existence of the "image right" of cultural property, basically limiting the right to create derivative works to what is held (by whom?) appropriate.

Wonderful, isn't it? (I'm wondering if we have a page here on Meta or elsewhere that we can update with all these delightful news from our lawmakers...)

Best, --Civvì (talk) 09:45, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
