Talk:Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Nominations/Nataliia Tymkiv
Heya, could I suggest that maybe the first point, although it's spot on, might be a little more specific?
You wrote that you'd like to focus on three main issues, but "WMF should do better" is rather all-encompassing.
Best of luck with the election! - Chris.sherlock (talk) 02:17, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- hello! thank you! you are right. it is all-encompassing. (un)fortunately 'total length of statement and résumé should not exceed 1000 words' :) I did try to include examples of real things (working or not) to illustrate every point. I'll try to answer your question here, though it will be a great deal later in the evening --アンタナナ 09:54, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Chris.sherlock, my (really) belated response is published in my answers here: Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Questions. Yes, it took me a while, but there are a lot of things I think we need to change --アンタナナ 03:38, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
Deletion of the Bible
editHi Nataliia, Could you give a summary of your involvement in the discussions relating the deletion of a translation of the Bible, about which you initiated a discussion over on English Wikipedia at en:User talk:Jimbo Wales/Archive 149#a simple question (i hope) that can be a tricky one (i fear), and resulted in the Wikimedia Ukraine Board refusal to grant membership to user:DixonD. John Vandenberg (talk) 02:28, 8 March 2016 (UTC) For full disclosure, I am the husband of Siska who is also a nominee in the 2016 affiliate-selected Board seats.
- Antanana may tell more on her involvement and thoughts on this issue (I've just reread that thread and believe that positions of different sides on the particular issue of DixonD membership are quite clearly stated, although of course there is a bigger picture and a lot more related things), but I can give some facts on Board voting and DixonD membership. It may not be quite clear from the formulation of the Board resolution who among Board members were for granting membership and who were against, but Antanana was among 3 of 7 board members who were for granting membership. Only 2 of 4 board members who did not support granting membership were reelected on next Annual General Assembly. DixonD reapplied and got membership --Ilya (talk) 09:52, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
- Just to clarify even more (I was on board at that time), here is the vote on DixonD membership, and it was a 3-3-1 decision with Antanana voting for granting membership — NickK (talk) 10:00, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks gentleman for providing more background. I am happy to see that the decision was reversed. I couldn't find that subsequent decision when I was looking for it. (unfortunately I am uk-0.1 inherited from ru-0.666 ;-))
- A little more background would be helpful. Was the board decision before or after Nataliia sought Jimmy's opinion on this matter? John Vandenberg (talk) 00:39, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- I'll try to provide you with a timeline:

- November 9, 2013: DixonD sent his application to the Board
- November 13, 2013: I posted the draft of the resolution for the Board and community members to discuss on wmua:

- November 19, 2013: I voted for DixonD [2]
- November 20, 2013: I asked Jimbo about things
- November 27, 2013: I received the permission for the Ukrainian translation of the Bible
- November 29, 2013: the resolution rejecting DixonD's application was published wmua:Рішення Правління №47/2013 від 29 листопада 2013

- January 9, 2014: DixonD became a member of Wikimedia Ukraine (wmua:Рішення Правління №2/2014 від 9 січня 2014)
- That's it, I think. If you need anything more, please ask. The guys have explained the facts pretty neatly above --アンタナナ 03:32, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Now a more direct question. Nataliia, why did you seek Jimmy's opinion on this matter? Should his opinion be given more importance than other community members? John Vandenberg (talk) 00:39, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi there, John Vandenberg. I'll start with the direct question, if you do not mind. This vote against DixonD's membership was explained by the need to "be guided by (...) own conscience and beliefs when taking decisions" (by the way, the whole quote was translated into English by Olena Zakharian here [3]), and this "need" even justifies overstepping the law, and even if "Jimbo Wales himself was behind this nickname[DixonD]", he would vote against him.
- I was still a newbie in Wikimedia Ukraine then, I have joined the organisation less than a year before, I was used to taking decisions in Wikiway (hey, we elect administrators openly, with all bad and good stuff said publicly) and the situation in the chapter was so very different (I have tried to highlight some of the troubles we have been through here), that I was appalled at this whole thing being real: Wikimedia Ukraine is a chapter supporting Wikiprojects, free licenses in Ukraine, it is supposed to abide by the law and by the rules, and here we have Board members voting against a user who (as an administrator) did the right things, and moreover, the Board treats it[the copyright clean up] (publicly) as a crime. And even more: we have a Board member stating that if Jimbo himself deleted the Bible, he would vote against Jimbo. So I had to ask a person in question[Jimbo] if he respects the law and rules, partially to restore my belief in people, and partially to make a point: "see, if Jimbo applied to be a member of Wikimedia Ukraine, we would not accepted him, as he also respects the copyright" --アンタナナ 03:05, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- p.s. I have managed to receive an OTRS permission for the Ukrainian translation of the Bible [4] and we have it now File:Ivan Ohienko Bible.djvu :) --アンタナナ 03:05, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining that you sought the opinion of Jimmy Wales because someone else invoked Jimmy Wales' name. That is an understable action for you to take.
- While Jimmy might have been 'right', it was impulsive and was divisive. The more appropriate solution is to work as a community to find another translation to replace the copyrighted one. I am delighted to hear that that a freely licensed Ukrainian translation of the Bible was found very quickly (within one week?). That is a very good solution to the problem.
- Perhaps you can see why I am very concerned about everyone looking to Jimmy Wales for answers. There are usually many solutions to a problem, and the 'best' solution may not be reached if everyone believes Jimmy Wales' opinion should be sought and given more importance; it can stifle discussion within the local community, preventing shy people from putting forward good ideas to be considered by the community. Questions to be addressed
editHi, I've been reading through the answers to the questions that have been posed by the community, and I note that there are several long-standing questions that you have not yet responded to. Knowing where the candidates stand on a variety of issues is important when deciding who to vote for, and if you have not done so recently it would be worth reviewing the questions that still remain to be answered. MichaelMaggs (talk) 17:31, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- Dear MichaelMaggs, thank you. I have posted my answers to the questions there. It took me a while though, I must admit :) --アンタナナ 02:21, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
