Inspire Campaign on content curation & review
editI've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.
All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

editThrough June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Прострочені підведення підсумків у ру-вікі

Whose Knowledge? user group update
editHi Antanana! Thanks for joining the Whose Knowledge user group - we’re so glad to have you involved!
Here are some updates about recent activities:
- User group approved: Our user group was officially approved in October - hooray! Big thanks to Raystorm and FloNight for the idea to create a user group for the Whose Knowledge? campaign :)
- Mapping feminist knowledge at AWID's 2016 Forum: Interested in learning more about what we’ve been doing lately? Read our blog post on what we learned from mapping feminist knowledge at Association for Women's Rights in Developments 2016 Forum.
- New grant proposal:
- We’ve proposed a WMF project grant. It would be great to have your feedback and/or endorsement by November 1 if this project interests you!
- It would also be great to have your help notifying communities already working on systemic bias about this proposal. Here is a draft message to use if you'd like - please translate, change as you see fit for your own context, and share in any communities you’re active in on and off-wiki!
Looking forward to doing more together very soon! Siko (talk) 01:57, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Whose Knowledge? News - February 2017
editThanks for all of your support for Whose Knowledge? so far! Get ready, we're going to need lots of your help in 2017 :)
What's new in 2017:
1. Volunteers needed
As Whose Knowledge? grows, there are lots of things to do! Can you help?
- Are you good with data entry, categories, mailing lists or social media? We especially need people to help with organizing knowledge for Dalit History Month, and building out our communications (including this monthly newsletter!) right now!
- If you're interested in volunteering for these or any other projects, please signup here
2. Pilot projects
Building partnerships and testing our approach with marginalized communities.
- Dalit History Month: We're working with Equality Labs to support Dalit communities in South Asia and the United States to map knowledge and create Wikipedia content. Dalit History Month edit-a-thons are coming in April!
- Women's Human Rights Defenders: In partnership with Urgent Action Fund, we'll be supporting a group of women's human rights defenders around the world with more mapping and wiki content creation. Themes and geographies coming soon!
- Kumeyaay Wikipedia Initiative: Following the 2016 Indigenous People's Day edit-a-thon, we're continuing to work with members of the Kumeyaay tribe in Southern California and Baja to map and contribute indigenous knowledge to Wikimedia projects. A discussion day with Kumeyaay community in San Diego is being planned for May.
3. Funding
We've got financial support for 2017!
- WMF grant: 6-month funding (February-July 2017) was approved to pilot our approach to mapping knowledge and creating Wikipedia content with the Dalit community and global women's human rights defenders. Thanks for all your endorsements!
- Shuttleworth Fellowship: Anasuya is a Shuttleworth Fellow! This means we'll be able to spend more time organizing, and have support for convenings, campaign infrastructure, etc.
4. Wikimedia Strategy
Find us at Wikimedia Conference.
- Anasuya and Siko will be carrying the Whose Knowledge? vision of diversity, pluralism and representation of marginalized communities into movement strategy conversations in Berlin March 2017.
- What's your vision for the Wikimedia movement? If you have a perspective that you'd like us to help represent in Berlin, please reach out and let us know!
In solidarity,

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018
editGreetings,
Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.
Kind regards
On behalf of Wikipedia and Education UG, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:44, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support
editHello. You are receiving this message because you kindly helped with affiliates-related translations in the past. The movement needs you again! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.
A Translation Central is available to help keen translators like you figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome. While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :)

Your faithful servant,
Relationship advice…
editOn Wikimedia Foundation Board noticeboard/Board Update on Branding you wrote:
I know there is mistrust towards the Wikimedia Foundation acting in good faith, I also know the staff members feel intimidated when talking with the communities, so it is really difficult to have a frank dialog. We are all in this vicious circle - we do not trust each other, so we do not talk honestly; we do not talk honestly so we cannot build that trust.
— User:NTymkiv (WMF) 01:00, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
I hope that's a heartfelt acknowledgement of the problem, and not a "diplomatic" way to shift the blame for the problems to the community for being horrible Internet people (which we, collectively, are, on bad days). The WMF is the professional part in this relationship, with the financial and human resources, and cannot hide behind human factors like that. WMF staff members can certainly feel intimidated when talking to the community, but they are actual paid employees and talking to the community is their job. That they have been allowed to refrain from this is the responsibility of the WMF leadership, from executive level on up to the Board.
And the main reason for the breakdown in trust is that the WMF has developed a patriarchal "we know best what's good for you" culture, claiming ownership of "the movement" and sees itself as the core, the heart and soul. Time after time the WMF has formulated some kind of "problem", as they see it, for which they suddenly dump a "solution" on the community, putting massive effort into ramming it through whether the community wants it or not. It's been technical things, like superprotect, and community governance issues, like the Fram ban, and now the very identity of the projects and volunteers that make up the actual movement.
The WMF now looks like they view themselves as any of the social media giants, where the big donors are the notional customers (advertisers) and all the volunteers doing the actual work on the projects are merely the product (only the customer is always right: the product gets changed at will to please them). The goal is not to attract large and ongoing donations; the goal is "the sum of human knowledge" (adjust as needed) and the fundraising is just a necessary prerequisite for that.
This goes for all the affiliates too: they exist to support the actual projects, they are not themselves the goal. But the WMF and their hired consultants still primarily consult the affiliates; weigh their input much more heavily than the community's; and include them in key points of the decision process where the community is left uninformed or kept at a distance.
The naming issue is a key example in that respect: the communities do not see the brand recognition of "The Wikipedia Foundation" as a problem (which means that if it objectively is a problem, the WMF has failed to persuade the community of that). Given there is no agreement on the existence of the problem, much less its specific formulation, there can be no agreement on any proposed solution. But in spite of this the WMF has presented a solution as a fait accompli (asking the community to give input on Wikipedia vs. Wikipedia vs. Wikipedia, but the WMF will decide, isn't even a minimally meaningful involvement), and is communicating about it in the kind of corporate PR speak that the WMF should know is not just antithetical to the culture on the projects, but is even in some cases actively against their policies. When the community tries to involve itself on its own initiative to give the feedback that the process is heading fast into the weeds, it is met with a framing that the community involvement is premature and therefore discountable.
When the community is telling you that you are heading in the wrong direction, the correct response is to stop and adjust course. When the community is telling you that they want to be heard, the correct response is to listen.
As a long-time contributor to Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Commons this process and proposal horrifies me. As a Wikipedian, I feel that the foundation is now trying to steal my identity, and to claim the credit for all the hard work I and my fellow editors have donated to the movement over the last 15 years. As a Wikisource and Commons contributor I feel that the already minimal regard the foundation hold for my contributions there has now turned from somewhat benevolent neglect into actively discounting our worth, to the point of actually distancing yourselves from the projects. If your absentee parents suddenly show up to announce that they will change their name to that of your older sibling, you can pretty much safely assume that the relationship is no longer a healthy one.
The WMF does not allocate ongoing resources to the smaller projects for even basic maintenance and bug fixes, much less the kind of new development that would allow them to grow and thrive, and now you even want to identify yourself solely with the one big project that gets all the resources anyway?
(Incidentally, a project whose culture has now become so toxic that after 15 years I am now avoiding it, and which contributors have been leaving in droves for years now. Even were I convinced the current branding was a problem, I would be extremely sceptical this would be a healthy brand to move to. Strategically, having some distance from individual projects makes a whole lot more sense.)
I don't want to give the impression that I am dismissing the importance of or effort put into the foundation or the affiliates. They are important and necessary parts of the movement, and certainly help contribute to the movement's goals. But right now I am not at all certain the foundation, and some of the affiliates, are all that clear on what those goals are, and they seem to be claiming ownership of and moral authority over the movement as a whole to the detriment of the projects and the core community.
I really really want the relationship between these different parts of the movement to be a happy, productive, and symbiotic one. But that can't happen while the projects and the community there feels discounted and ignored by the foundation. If the foundation really take the position that they are the core of the movement, and the projects and their contributors are of secondary importance, then it needs to actually say so so that we can have that difficult conversation. Right now the foundation is communicating that without actually saying it, and it feels really hurtful on the receiving end.
The path to repairing that relationship starts with the professional party—the one with the actual financial resources, and employees whose job description, tasks, and code of conduct can be unilaterally decided—taking the first steps, and does so with humility and respect. It needs to acknowledge that, without detriment to the importance of the foundation or the affiliates, the actual core of the movement are the volunteers, the community, building the actual projects. Consulting them, discussing with them, listening to their feedback, and adopting their priorities as your own is not actually optional. If the community does not agree, the available path is to persuade them, entice them with the benefits, not overruling them. In this sense it doesn't actually matter whether the community is right or wrong (I often think they are wrong): it is a matter of the integrity of the community, and by even attempting to overrule or force them you are violating that integrity. Nobody in the history of the world has been persuaded to a different point of view by being treated as recalcitrant children, especially not recalcitrant children.

edit View it! Tool update Jan. 2023
Big news, View it! users! Over the last two months, View it! has been expanded to two versions. Our new full version shows images within the wiki content page, and the "View" tab displays a gallery of images without leaving the site you are on, as you can see at right. We have rebranded the original version, which utilizes the "View" tab to link to our Toolforge search results, to "Lite". We invite you to switch to full version and try it out! Major changes:

Thank you for being a part of the View it! journey and please join us for the launch on January 12th!

Office hours
editThe first Apps office hour was held on the 23rd of March 2023; detailed information about the announcement, agenda, and even the record and presentation deck can be found here.
Community meetings
edit- We enjoyed meeting the Dagbani user group for a one-hour meeting and answering all of their question about Wikipedia’s mobile applications and how to use them for reading, searching, and editing. The community users expressed that they care about having more offline usage capabilities, and a new section related to this topic will be added to the Apps FAQ soon.
- With pleasure, we had a meeting with the Commons volunteers to explore possibilities for collaboration between them and the apps team within the foundation. We reached an agreement to intervene in critical situations with the play store to ensure that the Commons app remains accessible online.
We are excited and willing to arrange meetings with other community members who are interested. You may also contact us at aramadan@wikimedia.org to arrange such gatherings. ;)
Exciting news: iOS is currently developing a watchlist feature. Stay tuned for our next newsletter release to learn additional details about it.

Over 100 participants joined on Zoom, with others watching the YouTube live stream. The presentation covered the Apps' history, roadmap, open questions, feature reviews, and FAQs. Valuable feedback was shared, enhancing the apps' development and user experience. These collaborative engagements are vital to building a more inclusive Wikimedia platform. On August 17, the spotlight was on the Apps Team at Wikimania as we presented "There’s an App for that: a mobile-native way to interact with the movement". We appreciate everyone who tuned in virtually to explore the future of interaction with the Wikimedia movement through our innovative mobile app. If you missed it or want to revisit the content, you can find the presentation slides at this link.
We're excited to share that Jazmin Tanner, the Apps Lead Product Manager, contributed to the session titled "Supporting Moderators at the Wikimedia Foundation." As we diligently worked on refining the patroller feature on the apps, Jazmin provided valuable insights that contributed to discussions on enhancing the experience for both moderators and users.

Wikimedia Apps newsletter – First quarter of 2024
editHello, and welcome to the app’s first newsletter in 2024!
It has been a long year; we published four editions of our newsletter, which you can go through all of them. In this edition, we will cover our work for the last quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024!
Android
edit- Edit Patrol (also known as Patroller tasks on Android) has been released to Beta testers with rollback rights on Test Wiki and Indonesian Wikipedia. We had a productive meeting with Indonesian users to introduce and discuss the new patrolling tasks feature on the Android app, as we provided a detailed presentation on the feature, and collected valuable feedback from the Indonesian community to enhance the user experience.
For those interested, a meeting recording is available.
We conducted outreach to Spanish, and French Wikipedia communities during February 2024. - We hosted two synchronous community consultations & recorded a third where we shared the Edit Patrol suggested edit workflow, and showed designs for Saved messages and templates:
- Places feature is back to the Wikipedia Android app!
Places is a feature that allows you to discover articles by location.
The iOS app was able to maintain the feature via use of Apple Maps, but it was necessary for Android audiences that we continue using an open source map.
iOS
edit- Suggested Edits on iOS prototype is in the experimental build. Instructions to test the feature can be found on this FAQ page.
Alt text is text associated with an image that serves the same purpose and conveys the same essential information as the image.
The app's product manager presented our team's work and prototype (iOS suggested edits) to the GLAM conference audience. All details can be found in the presentation's deck. - It is now possible to donate using Apple Pay directly from the app.
- IOS Native Editor Improvement Development is out!
You will be able to edit, find and replace, and insert links and images directly from Commons without any performance issues!
Additionally, it is now possible to edit a full article page and a talk page.
In the current quarter, we aim to engage with editors from LATAM, Spanish-speaking regions, North America, and the Caribbean to test Suggested edits and the new native editor features.
Community meetings
edit- We participated in the GLAM conference in November 2023. All the details are mentioned in the iOS section of this edition from the newsletter.
- On December 1st of 2023, The Wikipedia Android team met with Indonesian users to introduce and discuss the new patrolling tasks feature on the Android app. The team provided a detailed presentation on the feature and collected valuable feedback. A meeting recording is available.
- We joined the Wiki Editoras Lx editathon on December 16th to gather feedback about an alt-text Suggested Edit task on iOS.
Attendees were generally positive about the prospect of the feature. Experienced editors thought it could be a good task for on-boarding new editors, but also a more casual way of contributing for new editors.

Wikimedia Apps newsletter – Third quarter of 2024
editHello, and welcome to the app's third newsletter of 2024! In this edition, we will highlight the accomplishments and progress made during July, August, and September 2024!
iOS Updates
Over 20,000 images have been added via the "Add an Image" feature across both iOS and Android! (T372954), good opportunity to try it yourself ;) This tool allows users to enhance Wikipedia articles by adding relevant images. It’s a great way to contribute and improve the visual experience for readers.
The iOS team kicked off the Alt Text experiment to improve image descriptions for accessibility. This feature helps ensure that visually impaired users can better understand the content of images through descriptive text.
The iOS App has been transitioning from a primarily reader-focused app, to an app that fully supports both reading and editing. After adding a number of editing features, the navigation system of the app needs to grow and change to support them and future additions. Improving our navigation will allow for more app users to discover editing features, and allow experienced users quicker access to their most-used tools. This refresh incorporates findings from usability testing with multiple variants of the App's navigation. The team is currently planning phased rollouts over the coming year to improve user experience. (Phase 1: T373714)
Android Updates
Improvements were made to the Places feature in response to user feedback, including larger cluster icons and a Wikipedia logo for articles without images (T371067, T370094). Also, the team is exploring designs to allow users to explore articles from multiple language wikis simultaneously and will adjust the zoom logic to show nearby locations upon launch (T352757, T368792).
- WikiTrivia Game
The team prepared for the WikiTrivia Game during a hackathon, selecting a data source and creating initial designs (T371508, T371510).
Work began on adding Recommended Content to search, iterating on design concepts and testing performance (T371613).
The team is now engaging with several wikis to implement Machine-Assisted Article Descriptions based on prior experimental results.
- Sharing reading lists
Android users can now share reading lists with others, expanding community collaboration (T370703).
And some performance enhancements: Revision tags for app edits were successfully implemented (T366731, T366732).
The app now supports URL sharing on Pixel devices, thanks to volunteer developer contributions (T370020).
Stay tuned for future updates as we continue to enhance your Wikipedia experience! And you can subscribe to this newsletter.
