Talk:Pageviews Analysis/Archives/2021/2

Latest comment: 3 years ago by ImaginesTigers in topic Feature request for Pageviews

I am writing to request that this tool's copyright be CC-By 4.0 international. The main reason why I want this is because this tool produces content which is of interest to researchers, scholars, and academics, and so its images should be easily available for publication in venues for that. In the en:open access social movement the recommended copyright license from venues such as en:PLOS is CC-By. I would like screenshots from this tool to be compatible with publication in open access scholarly journals.

Right now the copyright situation is a bit unclear. At pageviews on github it says "screenshots of the charts in Pageviews Analysis may be used without attribution, but a link back to the application would be appreciated". This is less clear than a copyright license and requires explanation if a journal requests anyone to provide usage rationales for publishing images.

There is a Wikimedia screenshot template commons:Wikimedia screenshot which makes some assumptions that people will screenshot Wikipedia articles, and which may not apply to this tool. That template defaults to saying that the license must be CC-By-SA, which is a license mandated for all submitted Wikipedia text.

I can talk more about this if anything is unclear but in summary - can the license for output of this tool be CC-By? Blue Rasberry (talk) 22:04, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

@Bluerasberry I have clarified that the charts are also in the CC0 public domain. I'm not very fond of having a different license for just the charts, in addition to separate licenses for the data and the code. Honestly, I'm not even sure I have the liberty to re-license the charts as they are merely a barebones visualization of public domain data. Warm regards, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:52, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): On second thought maybe my request is my own misunderstanding and being misguided, and maybe like you say there should not be additional licenses. I appreciate the clarification because I was grabbing some screenshots for publication off-wiki and I had to provide license explanations, and I got confused. Your CC0 intent does answer the request for a license, but also, with the code having a license, the data being public domain, and the image being a functional non-creative visualization, I am not sure there is a copyright in the charts for anyone to claim. There might be one in the screenshot of the interface beyond the chart. Whatever the case, thank you, I will reflect on it some more and maybe talk about it at Commons:Commons:Village pump/Copyright. How to Join Bifurcated Pageviews Dataset Post-Page Move (Article Rename)

  1. Background Scenario
  2. My Specs (Not relevant; courtesy listing)
    • Chrome 89.0.4389.105;
    • Android 11;
    • One UI 3.1;
    • Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G;
  3. Question(s)
    • Is the observed behavior for pulling pageviews data consistent with known expected behavior given the page was moved?
    • Therefore, the end user is directed to adjust settings to factor in Autocompletions including redirects or Always include redirects to obtain an aggragate dataset?
    • What is the likelihood of double-counting pageviews if relying on this recommended technique to address pageview anomolies when pages are moved (renamed)?
    • If in the Move function:
      • Article contents including categories are moved;
      • Edit history is also moved;
      • Talk page and its edit history are moved;
      • Wikidata is unlinked from the old article and re-linked to the new article;
      • Then it logically follows that pageviews datasets should also be unlinked/linked or merged or otherwise ported over to the new article page.
      • Unless, of course, there is some technological barrier, or resource costs make the automation of the move of pageviews prohibitively expensive or otherwise too complex and thus these options are not tenable.
I welcome constructive feedback and teachable insights in response to my query as I have absolutely no idea how WMF is setup, runs or what SOP is and am very eager to start learning. Please let me know if you have additional questions or require additional information. Thank you for your attention to my query. Kimdorris (talk) 07:55, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
@Kimdorris The Pageviews API goes by page title, not page ID, so pageviews are not copied when a page is moved (see phab:T159046). The recommendation is to use the "include redirects" option, or manually request each variant of the article. You probably want to always include redirects anyway, because if the reader got to the article from the redirect, the pageview is registered for the redirect and not the target article. Hope this helps, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:51, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
MusikAnimal (WMF): Thank you for the reply. It does help me understand what happens in the background and further solidifies the importance of the need to eliminate double redirects after page moves. And thank you for pointing out the fact that the Pageviews API uses the page title rather than the page ID. This factor alone explains ALL THE THINGS inherent in the platform. TIL. Date in ISO format

Can You set default format of date as international (as ISO standart) YYYY-MM-DD? ✍️ Dušan Kreheľ (talk) 21:54, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

@Dušan Kreheľ You can force ISO 8601 by going to Settings and unchecking "Localize date format". The localized format should match whatever locale your browser or operating system is set to. MusikAnimal talk 01:09, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Bug report: "Latest X" displays data for the latest X+1 days

https://pageviews.toolforge.org/?project=fr.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=latest-10&pages=Victor_Hugo
6 May 2021, Firefox 88.0 for Windows 10 (64 bits)

I was checking the Latest 10 and just noticed that the graph was displaying the data of the latest 11 days. I've checked Latest 20 and Latest 30 and they seem to suffer from the same issue. --Mafiew2 (talk) 07:37, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Would raw userscript views be tracked as well?

Hi! I'm developing Cita, a Wikidata addon for Zotero, and it checks for updates regularly, by getting an update.rdf file here. By counting the number of daily requests I could get a roughly estimate of how many people are using Cita, which could be useful in the future to support further development. However, unfortunately, Github does not provide request logs.

I considered using a proxy URL instead, such as those provided by iplogger, but this implies some security concerns.

I thought of hosting the update.rdf file as a Wikipedia userscript and provide the raw URL to it (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Js/6tabs-vector.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript). My question is: would hits to this raw URL be counted as pageviews by https://pageviews.toolforge.org/?

Thank you! --Diegodlh (talk) 16:17, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@Diegodlh According to Research:Page view#Definition, a pageview is only registered for text/html and application/json (the latter only on mobile), so I don't believe hits to the raw text/javascript URL will trigger pageviews. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:04, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, User:MusikAnimal_(WMF)! This resource you posted looks great. Thanks for sharing it! Hope you have a nice day/night. --Diegodlh (talk) 01:29, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Buttons in date picker can't be tapped on mobile

On mobile versions of Chrome, I'm unable to tap the buttons in the date picker window. This includes not only the range buttons ("Last month", "This month") but also the Apply button if I've selected a specific date range. Can someone look into this? Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 04:37, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Feature request for Pageviews

Hi there! I love Pageviews so much. It'd be great to have a 365 interval to quickly get data for the past year. ImaginesTigers (talk) 20:22, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
